As some of you may know my background/day job is in Olympic sport and I have been a HUGE fan of Simone Biles for many years. So today with the Olympics upon us, I thought I would share my thoughts on what is so special about her and what I think and hope will happen in Paris 2024...

I'm excited that my favorite American Football team (Chicago Bears) signed her husband to our team for this season because that means we're going to be cheering for the same team!🧡

There are a lot of women in their late 20s and 30s who will be competing at the Olympics. In the US, the culture is changing and the emphasis is less on youth. Pacing is important. Pushing an underweight kid to peak at age 15 is how we end up with abused children riddled with overuse injuries. Coaches and trainers are now learning to help kids to preserve their bodies through puberty so that they can compete longer and stronger. There is also a lot more recognition of the importance of mental health for performance in the developmental levels since Tokyo. I appreciate you covering this topic.

I should say… I’m speaking only about gymnastics. I don’t know the culture of other sports at all.

Yes of course there will be at the Olympics generally. But gymnastics is still a much younger sport overall, particularly looking at medallists, although yes there has been some improvement! Simone is the oldest on the US team at 27 and the average for the team is 21!

@@CharlotteHoldcroft only because hezley pulls the average down because she’s 16… and hezley only got a shot because 4 of our other top gymnasts (all 20+) got injured in the lead up to the Olympics.

@@CharlotteHoldcroft I don’t disagree that it historically has been a younger sport, but that is changing, at least it is in the US. Rebecca Andrade is going to medal and she is mid 20s as well. Becky downie is 32!

Yes and Simone is pushing it up lol! No other athlete over 24. Yes injuries is a key reason for high impact sports being younger. Of course there are anomalies in every trend, but if we look at the average ages across sports at the games, gymnastics is still at the very lowest end 🤷‍♀️

One of the things I love the most about Simone Biles is how assertive she is about how good she is! She IS the best, and there’s nothing wrong with stating the facts! If you’re good at something, saying that doesn’t make you conceited or braggy. Especially as women; people work so hard to take women down…I love that she is so vocal about the undeniable fact that she is the best to do it.

I love how assertive she is, but she doesn’t come across as arrogant. She knows there is always more to learn, and when it comes to things she can do that no one else can, she’s not shy about owning her talent. But it’s like “what? I can do triple flip dismounts off the beam and no other woman in the world has tried. It’s just a fact.”

Hi Charlotte, thanks for the great and different video! I didn’t expect to hear all of that! A lot of it resonated with me and my childhood. I had an abusive and violent stepmother and nobody knew the truth about her attitude towards me. School was the safest place on the world to me and the only place where I was literally happy and felt accepted. That’s why I loved going to school everyday and enjoyed studying all those years. I used to go to school an hour earlier than the time I was supposed to be there, sit behind the closed doors and wait for the janitor to open the door🙂. But as I got older and started living separately, i lost my motivation for studying because I was safe all the time! But to finish it all🙂I am 32 years old now, married, happy and loved, got a PhD and have a great job.

I didn't know. When I was 4-5 i loved doing acrobatics at my grandma's place and in first grade my sports teacher told my mom to take me to the gymnastics gym class. Omg that place was like going to a space ship lol 😂i was SO EXCITED. Then mom paid for my class and got me clothes..and i went there and got on my first class and OMG NOOO 😨☠️🤣🤣 I was so scared i never went back lol 😂 that was the end of ky Olympic career😂😂. But to this day i love to watch gymnastics ❤

It was brave of her to pull out of Tokyo and did so much for mental health awareness. She had so much pressure on her going into those games - she was the face of all of the marketing here in the US and everyone expected her to win 6 gold medals (team, individual all-around and gold on event finals for all apparatuses…*maybe* except for uneven bars - possibly silver to Suni Lee). That’s SO MUCH to expect out of one person. I remember being so impressed that she stayed for all of the remaining competitions and was a huge cheerleader for her teammates. I also remember thinking she seemed so relieved…like a huge weight had been lifted by deciding to mostly pull out of her remaining events. Another issue with the Larry Nassar incident was that it brought huge changes within USA gymnastics and serious discussions about who at the top knew what and when, and how much they’d been covering up for years. So in addition to the trials, there was also this enormous shake-up within the organization that was supposed to be protecting the athletes and the realization that they really hadn’t been doing that. Trust was broken there, big time. Apologies for the novel, I could go on but I’ll shut up 😂 thanks for the video!

I totally agree with the “catalyst” for a super elite athlete. In the field of boxing, Manny Pacquiao is considered one of the best boxers of his time and he had a very tough childhood, growing up in a very poor environment and came from a broken family. He worked as a construction worker and struggled to eat three meals a day. Now, he is a very successful athlete and very wealthy at that.

I admire Simone Biles for many reasons, but among them is how hard she works to continuously improve and challenge herself to beat her personal best, and her unwavering support for her teammates. She’s like a big sister to younger gymnasts (in particular Hezly Rivera this Olympic cycle) and you consistently see her on the sidelines cheering on her teammates when she’s not performing herself. She’s a true girls’ girl. ❤

She is incredible, unique and supremely talented. I've loved watching gymnastics since seeing Vera Caslavska (sp) on the beam in the 60's (I'm ancient) and I was captivated. Then along came Korbut, Comaneci et al and changed the face of gymnastics forever. Nowadays I'm still astounded at what these gymnasts are able to achieve, it's jaw dropping and mind boggling, especially when you see it in slow motion. Astounding. So looking forward to watching these games and the best of luck to Simone and of course, Team GB.

It completely boggles the mind that people who have probably never set foot in a gym and couldn’t perform at Simone’s level in 10 lifetimes would abuse her for putting her safety first and for deciding that she wasn’t going to risk her life for the possibility of more medals.

Loved this video ❤ I used to be a figure skater as a kid but wasn’t built for it so did ice dance as an older person. Still love to watch it, and gymnastics. Simone Biles is just in a different league to anyone else. These sports may look beautiful and graceful but, as you pointed out, gymnastics can be incredibly dangerous. To have the nerve to actually try those moves is something special in itself. Also really liking that these days women gymnasts are shredded and look powerful. Would love to hear more about your past sports careers ❤xx

I just love you and your channel! I watch your videos for years and now and then you come with absolutely great ideas around the corner 😊. It's so refreshing to hear your thoughts about this topic, but it's also entertaining to listen to your cinema experiences. I would love to hear you combine your passions and expertise, and talk about the make-up that the Olympic athletes wear during the Games. It's obviously not the most important part of their performances, and not to take anything away from their actual skills and achievements, of course, but just because it's something we all love hearing about around here.

So interested in this video. I was a competitive swimmer as a child and young person. I am visually impaired so would have been looking at the Paralympic’s. I was being watched for the 1984 Paralympics,but sadly I was ill for 4 months, so missed qualifying. I held the back stroke record at national level for my sight classification for 3 years. I was also brought up by, and finally adopted by my maternal grandparents. I have never heard about this link between sporting excellence and childhood adversity, but I absolutely get it.
