Judges were fierce this round. Made the winners and "not so" winners cry. Come on guys...THERE'S NO CRYING IN PHOTOGRAPHY. Great points made. Great show and I am looking forward to next week.

Thx Sal....for the PTSD. This took me back to daily critiques in photo school, class of '1980. Every week the instructors - and class, provided "constructive criticism" to the students for class assignments, be it table-top large format, product illustration, food, industrial, etc. It was nice to remember my ears glowing RED....surviving, and NOT being among the worst!

We need to see some of the shots the contestants take throughout their shoot as they take them flash them up on the screen like many RU-vid vids on camera and lens reviews etc, and maybe some filming of them making their creative edit choices and culling etc. would be so much more info for us.

I think you picked the right Winner!, but I think I would have taken that model and greased his hair to the back and maybe put some charcoal on his face to give him a more edgy rugged look. All the layering that he was wearing also made it hard to see past all that, maybe a clean shirt only and not a JC Penney catalog ensemble. Black and White was a great choice!.

Dang it man! The one issue that I had with this outcome was that every single one of them had images that I felt were much stronger than the ones that they chose to submit, that was disappointing because they are all great.

Yeah I kept saying go hard, grungy, but not one tried. Totally agree with the judges needed better effort. Hard not to feel sorry for the photographer that had to leave. We’ve all had those sessions that just didn’t work out.

IMO Laura should have been the winner this week. Yes, her entry was pedestrian and safe, but if didn't have the glaring fault of Margo's entry with the glaring white shirt and chest, which is where my eye goes. Margo's was a close second though. B&W should have been an obvious choice for a guy portrait of this guy. I would have chosen to shoot against the rough stone wall in the venue, instead of using a background.

i'd have to respectfully disagree with part of your assessment. I believe that by playing it safe, Laura didn't nail what could've been a winning image, she as well as the other contestants did a good job, but the judges were right in their voting. Margo's decision to turn it black white was a good choice IMO, because it was something different than what the other contestants did, now the hair going across the face, should've been caught in post as well as the other strand of hair right beneath his jaw. I like where you're going with the shooting against the rough stone wall in the venue, however, I guess that since they had Background Town there, it was kinda mandatory that they use the backgrounds provided, maybe BGT has a rough stone wall background available for purchase 🙂

I think when peoplle refer to the nifty-fifty from Canon they tend to refer to the 50mm 1.8 lens which you can get for like $100-$175 depending on the mount. At over $2000, the RF50mm 1.2 is more like the not-so-thrifty-fifty.

I know Sal wanted to see some hard light in this episode but I feel like the styling of the male model worked against them and didn't inspire hard lighting IMHO ... Out of curiosity, could they have used a reflector in this challenge even though they had 1 light source?🤔 ... Can't imagine the pressure these photographers went through ...Really like the work produced this season 👏

Based on the attire layers and textures this shot could be fashion oriented, one hard light through 2 v flats narrowed just a sliver of light subject towards the light three quarter view. Seeing that it is indoors I would expose half stop under and let the main light do the rest.

These sort of contests always fascinate and frustrate me so much to watch. I'll never understand the point of having people try to throw something together in arbitrarily tiny timeframes rather than just giving people equal amounts of reasonable time to see who actually has the skill to produce the best thing.

@@SalCincotta1 Eh. I was referring to the genre as a concept, not this series. The baking shoes bother me for the same reason. Any of the creative competitions, tbh. I think there's a reasonable medium between asking for a four tiered wedding cake in 2 hours and giving someone a month to plan it. I still watch the series, I just struggle with why we all suddenly decided it needed a rush factor to be interesting.

This competition is actually more like real life. They only need to get one good shot in a photo session. 8 minutes for one good shot and 30 minutes to edit a single photo is very generous in the life of a photographer.
