Creawsome mod for CURA 4.0

To understand the _MACOSX folder you have to go back in time to before Mac OS X to what Mac old timers would call Classic Mac OS. At a fundamental level, a “file” on a disk consists of a directory entry which contains the file name, the creation and modification dates (ie the file metadata), plus a pointer to where the content of the file starts on disk and the length of the file (ie the file data). On just about every file system other than Classic Mac OS, each directory entry could point to exactly one chunk of data (starting point and length). On Classic Mac OS, each directory entry could point to TWO chunks of data. These two chunks of data (with I ndependent start points and lengths) were known as the “Data Fork” and the “Resource Fork”. Conceptually, the Data Fork on a Mac was the same as a regular file on any other operating system. It was an unstructured sequence of bytes. It was up to the application reading or writing the file to impose order and meaning on the bytes in the file. The Resource Fork was different. The structure was precisely defined by the operating system. For a Classic Mac app, the CODE resources contained the executable binary and multiple ICON resources the icon definitions. There were hundreds of different resource types (fonts, localised strings, you name it). Not all were used in every situation but were there if needed. Along came Mac OS X which inherited Classic Mac OS file systems (the Hierarchical File System, HFS, and its successor, HFS+). OS X did not really use the resource fork. An application was defined as a “bundle” (a folder that behaved like a single file in the Finder) and things like application icons were individual files within each application bundle. But, the Resource Fork was still there as part of HFS and it later came to be used for extended file attributes. The problem is, how do you transport a file with two forks across a medium that does not understand two forks? How do you preserve the Resource Fork on an operating system that doesn’t neither need it or understand it? There are two answers. One is that you simply don’t bother. A dual-fork file copied to, say, a FAT format USB drive, and then copied back to a Mac system could lose the Mac OS X Resource Fork content without much harm. Sort of analogous to stripping geocoding and orientation information from an image. The image may wind up rotated through 90 degrees and you might not know where it was taken but the image pixels are still OK. The other answer is that you use a “flattening” approach where the Resource Fork, if it exists, is copied into a shadow directory like _MACOSX. When the file on the USB FAT file system is copied back to a Mac native file system, the Resource Fork can be reconstituted. In Classic Mac days, ditching a flattened Resource Fork could conceivably prevent a file from working once it arrived back on a Mac. In macOS (the X is implied these days) times, I think it would be rare to find a file that was materially harmed by losing its Resource Fork. Incidentally, this also explains why you will find references to “.sit” compression file formats and the like. They are Resource-Fork-aware, unlike say “.zip” which uses the flattening approach and, in turn, is why when you unpack a .zip you might find a _MAXOSX inside it.

Tried this with Cura 4.1.0 for my Ender 3 Pro ... Using the proper files AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS, and it was truly Creawesome! The quality of my prints significantly improved. Thanks for the video!

BEST cube I ever had with CURA! I had similar result with S3D but less shiny finish. Definetly keeping the plugin!

Just printed a leg for my Ikea Lack enclosure using this. I had a slight layer issue near the bottom but nothing that looks like a deal breaker. the print time increase is very accurate... this part took about 16 hours on the default (plus some minor tweaks) and this bumped it to a full 1 day print. That being said, this print is smooth and very detailed for it being a .2mm print! really happy with it and will defiantly use it for smaller and detailed prints, one that can be ugly but functional, not so much.

Wow! This is a game changer! I typically (almost always) use Simplify 3D for my slicing software, but I keep Cura on my machine as a back-up. This may change real soon. Very good presentation Bryan!

I've spend weeks fine tuning my Ender 3 Pro. In that time, my results have really been paying off in quality and repeatability. Installed the Creawesome Mod today. Apparently, I wasn't done fine tuning. Noticeable improvement on several models I've printed before. Absolutely worth the small effort to install. No issues whatsoever except for the spelling of "awesome".

Excellent finish on the jobs, except for the seams. The only change I made was to return the fan to 100% as bridging was affected at the lower fan setting.Well worth the install.

Tried this out, VERY happy with the results! It does take a bit longer overall but would rather have a nice reliable print than a faster one that I had to restart and tweak 5 times ;) Thank you very much for posting this!

Wondering what Zource you're getting your Re-Zources from...

I just finished 2 benchys, one with this mod and one with approx the same settings in Cura 3.6. I didnt do any calibrations in between, and I have printed better benchies in Cura 3.6 than the one with these settings, but the mod does an ok job. After flow and retraction calibration I think it will be great! Thanks for this video :)

I’ll be adding these profiles for my Ender 5 and cr10s pro as soon as they finish their current prints. This looks like a welcome addition!

how long is it supposed to take to launch the first time. Mine does not seem to be bringing up anything but the splash screen

The new Mod has taken my Creality CR-10S Pro to a new level in print quality. A night and day difference from the original code Cura was running for my machince. Cura should hire the guy, seriously, He took their software to a whole new level.

I installed it on my computer and for some reason I get some error and it doesn't slice at all. Now, I can't get cura to work at all! I even did a windows restore to a previews date and I still can't slice in cura. I have deleted all the cura folders and files as well. Nothing! I am currently using my laptop to slice in cura because I can't get my desktop to work at all!

There's crucial info missing from this video. The actual print specs of the original cube would've been nice, and was that printed fresh out of the box or after adjustments were made to the Ender 3 or print profile? I did a clean install of Cura 4.0 and selected Cura's Ender 3 profile when I purchased the Ender 3. I'm getting the same print quality by adjusting the print temp per my filament and layer height (magic number of course) for my desired outcome. Seeing the printer in the preview is nice, but currently that's the only benefit I see with this mod. From the mod's description, it sounds like the creator wanted an easy way to share print profiles across devices and with others. Prior to Cura 4.0, you could export/import profiles to accomplish this, and with 4.0 you only need to sign into your account. Import still works for sharing profiles. I would like to try the creator's print profiles, but I do not see a reason to install a full mod.

Interesting mod. My question is if I can just get the printer profiles without doing the whole mod. The new background is kinda cool but I'm mostly interesting in testing the profile against the other ones I've fine tuned. If it works better I'll use it but if it doesn't I'll just stick with my current setup and not have to change how Cura looks.

Just tried it, only thing I don't like is certain settings are blocked. I have a BMG extruder, I found that 60mm/s retraction is totally fine and improves my prints but it won't let me put anything over 50mm/s. It flat out refuses to slice.... Not a fan of blocking settings... I might just have to export the print profiles and scrap the rest of the project.

what about the CR-20 pro love ? Do we keep using the CR-10 settings with adjusted bed settings or will there be a dedicated profile ?

No need special profile.I tested it on my Tarantula.I took the Creality Ender3 and modifies the machine settings.It is a nice mod.

Question, If I don't want to use the Mod, or just stay with Cura 3.6, Wouldn't the Ender 3 settings you used be transferable to a 3.6 profile? i mean the Mod doesn't effect the profile?

Stupid question, how do I get my Ender 3 to print that test layser along the front of the buildplate and not the left hand side

Ok so I just tried this out. I used cura 4.0 with chep profile and started printing the chep test cube. As it was printing that cube I upgraded to the creawsome profile and resliced the same chep test cube. After that cube was done I compared the 2 and the standard cura chep profile had a better top layer but all other sides were way better. I then measured them with my cheap digital calipers and the standard cura was off on the x,y side from 19.95 to 20.15mm but was 20.05 in the z height. With the creawsome the xy side were both 20.05mm but the height was off at 20.15mm. Just my findings.

Would it make sense to use this mod for Prusa printers?

Be sure to full back up your settings. Going back is NOT as easy as just restoring the resources file. That was seen as a corruption of profiles by Cura and forced me to have to reset my installation to factory. yep, lost all my machines, profiles and materials. Reason I went back: Nozzle size is a drop down of pre-set sizes: .2, .4, .6, .8 - So if you have a .5 nozzle, or 1.0 you have no way to set that. Sad really because i would have loved to *not* have 5 machines for the same CR10s5 just because I change nozzles a lot.

so i had to uninstall land then reinstall. i just upgraded to a dual extruder do any of the crewawsome mods have this feature?

FYI, it does say 4.0 required and 4.1 just came out... so don't try to install with Cura 4.1. I reinstalled 4.0 to use the mod and my first slice came out very "partial"... showing intermittent and partial layers. So have to try it again with something else.

no profiles are showing up. i got the ender3 not appearing in list resolved but theres no profiles for me to load. i dont have the magic numbers for instance.

Yeah..... On my Mac, Cura quits each time I try to launch it with the new resource folder... I replace the old resource folder, and it launches again... :-( I may just tweek some of the setting you covered, but I would like the mod to work.

Does anything need changing for a 0.8mm nozzle?

I tried to install this but the Ender3 is not showing up in the Creawasome list so I uninstalled 4.0 and reinstalled and added the resources and it still isn't there. Oh well its not to be PS the graphic does not show either but the splash screen does or rather did

Looks a good idea , BUT on my cr10s pro it turned a 16hrs print ( Default ) in to a 1 day 14 hrs print. For me I`m not sure if that lost time is worth the gain in quality ?

The retraction settings stop my prints' filament feeding!!! After a while the extruder keeps skipping! If i disable retraction everything works ok (but....with stringing). Anyone else with the same issue?

Hi there worked on my windows 10 netbook but non on my Windows 7 desktop shop workhorse. Uninstalled cura, reinstalled, same deal nothing on screen after it says initializing interface, cut the C down in the tray. Could be a number of things but just saying it did work on 1 of two of my machines.

Now we need one of these for an Anet A8!

I followed your instructions. HEY ! It works. lol. It's actually a fantastic mod. The difference between my before and after calibration blocks was amazing and that was only at .20 !! I am printing some other stuff now and it's absolutely fantastic. Not sure why the Cura 4.1 newest software crashes on my updated windows 10...(Without the CreAwesome Mod) I went back to 4. Anybody else have crashing issues with 4.1 ? I'm running a Hexcore and 64gb of ram...not like it's slow. thoughts ? It makes me appreciate Linux Manjaro more everyday.

Hi what is needed for BL Touch?

So the mod installs just a profile installer or does it put in some gcode beyond the standard Cura settings? Plus, what about .08 layer heights? Clearly, the maker of mod doesn't print small detailed items. This just seems like a smoke and mirrors way of importing a profile to me. Why go through all this when clicking import profile does the same thing?

I have installed the new mod. You say you need to change the start g code if you have a bl touch. I do have one but not so sure what I need to change or how to change it can anyone help?

For those of you that are having a Cura Crash with Mac OS like I did the first time. Here is a simple fix. The instructions on the GitHub missed a step. The resource folder that you want to replace is not the in the first directory, it's down 1 more directory and in lower case fonts. Double click on the Resource folder and it will take you to the one you want to replace. You need to replace the secondary lowercase one, not the first uppercase one. That should do it. Follow the same instruction replacing the correct file.

Hi, thank you for the CreawesomeMod. There is a g-code that's drawing a straight horizontal line in the beginning that's hitting my paper clip due to the size of my fan/mod. Does anyone know which code it is so I can disable it?
