By looking at some of the architectural details of the original part of the house, my best guess is that it was built circa 1830-1845. The biggest clue was the exterior mounted door latches. Post 1845 was when they started using the ones we still use today where the mechanics of the doorknobs and latches are hidden inside the door. I disagree that the house is beyond repair. It appeared to be basically sound structurally. Even the addition that was pulling away from the main house could be jacked up and reattached, IMHO. Those colored tiles looked to be made celluloid, (an early plastic), and came into fashion in the early 1910s. My 1912 house has them throughout the kitchen, including the ceiling. You're explore of the rural Ohio home with the cupola at the top (you called it a Widow's Walk) came into my feed. That was an awesome house, too. You've got yourself a new subscriber here! Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more content from you. 🏚👍

My house is like that too with the old barn doors and then in a couple bedrooms it's got like pegs for the Sunday best clothes and then a workplace and in the staircase has got the old square wooden spikes that they used I don't know how old my home is but I do know and 1941 they finally got electric here

That room with the curved cieling could be a root cellar. However it looks like a fallout shelter. Early they were used in case of Indian attacks, but I don't think that house is old enough for that. They were also used as tornado shelters, then in the 50's and 60's as shelters in case of nuclear war. Some people had them installed at that time, believe it or not. The arched cieling gives more strength. It looks like a tornado shelter to me.

I would totally make it into a house but leave it all original except for doors, windows, Insulation, central heat, and central air. OK so it might not be left that original when I’m done with it but at least it would have that character you can’t get in a new house.

I grew up in this town, and stumbled on this home myself when it was up for auction 4 years previously. It was closed up tight when I walked around the property, but I saw much of what you did from the outside. You're lucky you didn't venture too far to the right rear of the home as there is a huge sinkhole back there - I nearly fell in it. Not sure if it's part of the well collapsing or what, but almost definitely part of the problem when it comes to the back end of the house sinking. It believe someone did purchase this house at auction back in November 2013 and had plans to repair it and that is why there was sheet rock downstairs. They may have abandoned the project, however. I have some photos I took of the place. You'll recognize some of them facebook.com/pg/BirchLeafPhotography/photos/?tab=album&album_id=538777646207379

Actually this home was more than likely built prior to 1900. But in Greene County they did not start keeping records of homes until 1900, so everything built before that was automatically given 1900 for the record books.
@OnceOccupied

Very interesting. It would be need to find some vintage maps from before 1900 to see if the property is on them.

That big hole next to the house was a cistern. I believe the new owner may have had plans for making apartments out of this house. The original part of the house still looks to be good. I do believe this house could be saved but they ABSOLUTELY have to start with a roof. Nice work, new sub here.

This was a great place...Bet that they had servants and part of the basement and very upper part were servants sleeping area.That domed area could have been a large built in oven.The back kitchen was an outside kitchen...not only to protect the rest of the house from fire...but kept the rest of the house cooler in the summer months while they were cooking.One area for storage for things they had canned from thier garden and an area for washing thier laundry...a place to make thier homemade soap and looked like a place they may have had an area to butcher meat and hang in the basement...probrably perserved by salting or smoking.Big houses like that that were owned by richer families had places to do all that and be self sufficient...hard to go to nearest town very often so they did it all on thier own farm....Remember back in those days they had outhouses and indoor bathrooms and plumbing would have been added on later as was that back addition.As the family grew,so would the house.Any servants would have had a back entrance and later on thier own bathroom.Really love these videos of old houses and the history that came with them...the stories these houses could tell if they could talk.....

The second kitchen was a summer kitchen (my grandma talked about these). The summer kitchen would've had a huge stove and a massive table in it back in the day. This is where the canning of veggies and fruits would've been done in the hot summer months for hours and days on end. The stove was missing, it would've had 6 burners and maybe a couple of warming plates on one end. Laundry was usually done using a wringer washer and a tub of water on the back porch - Fels Naptha soap (still available) was widely used back then. I miss my grandma and her stories about how things used to be!

Man nice digs, I love Ohio its so haunted - now I'm not sure where you stand on spirits, ghosts etc.but from 0:22-26 seconds you will notice what looks to be a very large dark colored bug.. not a bug , pause and capture it a few times at different positions you will see its not a bug. What it is well its a spirit or atleast has one attached you will see a white mist accompanying it and a face if you get a good shot. Its not human I have a theory but its out there (more so than saying its not a bug lol) I will tell you I see these things all the time in urbex videos, I'm talking from the USA to Finland & Denmark. It circled you at least 4 times , check it out. Take care.

The arched room is an interior ice house where ice was stored for use it in the summer months indicating wealth. Large homes used to have ice cut in the winter with saws that was then stored in an underground hole with saw dust and small door and lot of earth heaped over top. However, as the railroads became widespread ice manufacturing plants became more popular. While they didn’t freeze water and bag it as we do now they stored a large amount of ice over the winter and people bought smaller amounts. It was used in drinks to make ice cream or chill food and later in the ice box. City folk had an ice delivery service to handle ice boxes.

That's some house with the add on that was sharp you noticed that, that addict would of been cool but looked like a real climb though, I'm surprised started off with a lot of activity then died (ooohhh get it !) lol anyways there was one other oddity at 12:12-17 in front of the fireplace on the ground you will see purple (not the mattress - they suck by the way I bought one) no its the color next to a rock it changes size and morphs hen you come out from the back its gone then bam its back. Anytime you see purple or a blue lights or that's out of place sometimes looks like neon - that's an entity , I don't know if you ever saw ghost adventures wolfe manor episode they had a camera made by a scientist which captured all the way down the light spectrum and most spirits appeared as that purple or bluish purple very interesting. Ok sorry for all the babble enjoyed your work!!! take care

Many of these really old homes ended up like a patchwork quilts. They didn't even use blueprints to build the add-on's, they would just start building the additions.. At the time that house was built there would not have been indoor bathrooms and the kitchen may have been separate too. They didn't want fires from cooking to burn the house down. Sometimes there was an indoor kitchen, but also another one for Summer that was separate from the house to keep it cooler when people were cooking. It is also very typical for houses to be added onto as the family grew and/or they had more money. I always hate to see these old houses left to rot, but even without any foundation problems and stabilizing the additions it would be very costly not just in labor but in cash. Insulating, updating plumbing and electric, tearing off the lathe and plaster walls and doing sheet rock just for starters! Then there's refinishing the floors, central heat and air, painting, new bath fixtures, kitchen cabinets, and light fixtures. This may well have been why it looked like someone started. work on it and then stopped.

The basement looks like it was used as living space , the outside that went under the house is called a root cellar they would store food like potatoes,onions and canned good because it was super cool year round. Not sure where the kitchen was usually there above the root cellar and have a dumb waiter inside a kitchen cabinet which also had shelves with holes in them to cool foods like pies. I lived in a old house in Calif that had that but didnt have a basement( no need no tornado threat) Great house!!

Pretty sure that other “kitchen” is what they called a mud room. It’s where you’d come in after a day of work and shed your dirty outer garments and such to be washed, so it of course had a sink and probably later a washer and dryer when those became common household items. You’d keep your coats, hats, rain gear, etc. hung up back there.

Cool place Really, if somebody had the ambition it could be fixed up. To answer your question about that arch in the basement, it would be directly located underneath a fireplace that's how they held them up in the old days. In some very fancy houses I've seen the arch underneath the fireplace converted into a wine cellar.

At least you found the well the easy way!! I wonder if there is a manufactured date on that new drywall? Seeing that old boiler thingy (down with the gas-engine pump) The house may have been coal heated etc. That domed room may be a coal storage room. My grandmothers house was build in 1901, she had these rooms in the basement that had a little window very close to the roof. They were very small (~2x2) and kinda had a slope/ramp that went into the room. My dad told me that is where the truck would dump the coal in from the outside. Judging by the plaster and Lath, certainly at least the '40's. Although the C/B panel looked kinda new. A lot of these old houses are oddly shaped because: The house would be built, then the son/daughter would get married etc and they would move in, have kids and have an extension built. Beautiful house, the amount of work and craftsmanship put into things build back then astounds me. Think of all the brickwork.

It’s hard to say what happened but my guesses a house of that size and age would require a substantial amount of maintenance. It is Broadway not the cheapest house to heater air-conditioning either. My guesses the property is abandoned because there’s no extra money to take care of it which is sad.

Cool video, towards the end when u guys r in that lil basement area, w all those small rooms it makes ya wonder who they may have kept down there. Very creepy looking. I got a very bad vibe looking at that place.

Oh, what a lovely basement kitchen complex that was! I wish you'd lifted that mantle on the floor so we could see it. All the little rooms had their purposes. The arched, brick room was for cool storage. The root cellar, canning pantry, work & dining area all were there, and with all the windows, this would have been a very pleasant space at one time.
@OnceOccupied
@OnceOccupied 6 лет назад
I think so too it makes sense that it was used as a root cellar or to store canned food

I don't think this house is creepy at all...ive seen some restored..they're beautiful..once you get the dirt out! And it would have to be structurally sound...but I'd take it in a minute for the right price!!

It’s because GoPros are all fisheye. If you look at the later videos I remove the fisheye post production and in the latest videos I film with a wide angle lens that does not have fisheye at all. Do you have to use a wide angle or else you wouldn’t be able to see a whole room because it’s just too zoomed in. I continue to work to improve my camera gear and learn how do you fix this kind of stuff post production.

Yes, posting the actual location in public makes it where anyone can go visit. Most will respectfully take pictures but a few will steel, smash, spray paint, and burn. We have learned our lesson over the years. All REPUTABLE explorers are the same way. We often share locations in private on a case by case basis with others we trust.
