Hey Derek, this is super cool! I was thinking that since the flowers are red, you could light it using a programmable RGB light and have it go from yellow/orange (that will really make the red pop) to a blue/green (that will mute the red to almost black) so that in addition to wilting, they could change color too...just a thought.

Not only does the prop look and work well, but I must say, the thing that I impressed me was the fact that you didn't just give up. Some times it's the easiest thing to do. Thanks for the job well done.

Wow those wilting flowers was absolutely impressive this reminds me of the wilting flowers from ET when he was about ready to not make it and or not feeling well probably has the same motor make as this one, this one had blood red roses which definitely highlighting the prop and gave it color also it looked eerie and haunted like just by how they creeply went down good job on it and love the make and build

about halfway through the video I gave an audible "ohhhh!!!" as I realized what was going on. This is awesome! It also gets my brain working on other things to do with this effect! Maybe instead of rods, there's wires attached to petals that get constricted when the mechanism moves down to close the flower up? A blue light that pulses in time with the mechanism so as the flowers droop the light desaturates them and makes them look more dead! So many options!

OMG, that is so awesome! I knew you would get it to work this time! You should sell those to movie production companies; it is such a great, stand-alone, special effect that you could use anywhere. Hook the power to a motion or light sensor, or even use a DC motor with battery pack. There are so many possibilities for this prop. Amazing job, again!

Glad you were able to get it going and it looks great. It reminds me of that scene in E.T. with the dying flowers ( I think they were mums?) that come back to life when...well you know... I don't want to spoil things for the few that might not have seen ET. (And if you haven't, go watch it, it is one of the best Spielberg films.)

So good !! Great build ! I would be you, I would add some kind of grease/lubricant inside of the tubes to make the movement more smooth and that way the metal wires don't scratch up the inside of them over time.
@buildingthemagic

This worked so well! In a show scene it could be so easy to do a tight focus of cheerful red light on the upright location and a putrid green/blue down the stems where they wilt into. This looks so good, man!
@youdontgettoknow139
@youdontgettoknow139 Месяц назад
I'm working on that myself, only with orange fading to blue. And I'm changing the motor to a linear actuator, and redesigning the internals.

Do you ever use lithium grease to reduce friction? Try some on the inside of the green stems and even on the rod where it travels between the track wheels. This should help keep things smooth and less chance of binding.
@KerriGilpin
@KerriGilpin Год назад
That was a lot of engineering work! I feel like this action could be applied to other props, I also like how long the roses stay upright before wilting. The speed seems good for that particular illusion. I have aquariums, and that tubing is probably fine with CA glue but I’d probably add some silicone to reinforce. I honestly can’t remember why I think that because I use CA glue for creating items for inside the aquarium, even attaching plants to rocks but the tubing I’ve never used CA, only silicone. Again it may be fine 😁

Well done for not giving up... couple of ideas to improve it and maybe get it to last longer. 1) not sure if you thought of this, but rounding over the tips of the wires would definitely improve things.. just cutting lengths of wire, leaves sharp ends, which would eventually cut through the rubber tubing 2) apply lubricant to the wires when installing, further decreasing the friction between wires and tubing Excellent job though

I would recommend maybe using steel cable thats been straightened instead of the rods inside the stems. This would allow you to rig the bottom to retract more and it be more fluid.

Derek, I was wondering if you could make a animatronic coffin with Skelton opening and closing the lid and where I could put a fog machine to give it the graveyard effect. I want to build one next year. If you make one please post it. I would love to tackle it.

How did you paint vinyl tubing so it would not chip off as the tubes are bent and straightened continuously?

@VanOaksProps

I have a video on building a $5 prop controller that you could use for that kind of setup. You'd just need a PIR sensor for the trigger.

Just wondering why my door rollers are to big? They are 1.5 inch like you have in your list of parts. I can't install one of them because it hits the other and the spacing is to close for the flat stock to go through
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 11 месяцев назад
Weird. Are they 1 1/2” wide with the notch?
@halloweenguy37
@halloweenguy37 11 месяцев назад
Yes they are So when I measure from center hole to center hole on the two mounting holes it is a inch and a quarter so wouldn't that mean that the rollers should be an inch and a quarter?
