Thank you for doing a real project and not being only a swatch-artists.

It blends well on smooth papers, especially in combination with General black and white charcoals pencils on Strathmore Toned Grey paper.

That final shot looks very much like a b/w photo if a coloured piece, like in a printed book when colour printing was very expensive. Nice demo Lisa, very informative.

Thank you soooo much for sending them! I probably wouldn't have tried them had you not! I used them once before with smart art box but not with oms then never bothered again. Glad you got me to!

@@Lachri I thought they were neat. Plus no dust or gritty feeling on your fingers. We all know how you feel about that. 😅

LOL well they don't smudge/blend like normal graphite or charcoal. I probably should have shown the difference to make my point more clear haha!
@confidential5897

Okay, they smudge a bit much to work well with watercolor but you made them do some awesome things! If you're feeling adventurous, try out some lithographic crayons with watercolor. They do what we kind of want the Nero pencils to do, but way better. They are oily and water-resistant but stay in place. They actually have a really cool vintage illustration vibe, think Curious George and Madeline.

Interesting to see how they blend out with OMS, a little really goes along way.

Thanks for the review :) I've had these for years (gotten them as a gift), but had no idea what to do with them since I don't really draw in graphite or charcoal anymore. But they seem like a good replacement for a black colored pencil? I want to draw a solid black surface on a colored pencil drawing and have been trying out what would give me the blackest result. India ink would stand out too much I think, plus it has a yellowish sheen I don't like. So either Nero or a colored pencil (Polychromos or Derwent Drawing) with the help of OMS to get full coverage sounds like the best bet. Would you say Nero black appears darker than your black colored pencils when blended with OMS, or are they about the same? Am I overthinking this? 😂

My brother recently gave me some Faber Castell Pitt matte pencils, which are kind of the opposite of this. They play up the darkness, but emphasize that the lack of sheen is supposed to photograph or scan better. They're ok, certainly beautiful like you'd expect from them, but I've not yet figured whether I like them better or not.

The Lumigraph are like that and I love them. I don’t like the graphite shine so this and charcoal worked for me. Enjoy

They certainly have an advantage in being able to remove or lift when the other water soluble graphite doesn’t. I might like these more. I do regular charcoal but this is cool. Nice work!
@Lachri
@Lachri 3 года назад
Yeah that part really shocked me. On the flip side, water soluble graphite blends out smoother, of course that could create it's own challenges.

@@Lachri it looks like you could leave a puddle of it on the side and just paint with it and clean it up with the eraser. Medium would be probably the hardest to achieve..

So do you recommend getting the hard and medium along with the sticks… or just the extra soft.
@Lachri
@Lachri 3 года назад
They are inexpensive enough I think it's worth getting at least the hard and extra soft so you have the two extremes, but I would also recommend trying all of them yourself because depending on how you use them you may like the medium too. For me, I can see myself repurchasing hard and extra soft.

This are similar to conté a Paris pencils? If not, I have a related question regarding conté pencils, I have noticed there's 2 kinds of Pierre noir pencils (black) But is not clear wich series is what. And their site don't say anything about it. Seems one is oily while the other series is not. But even in the package there's no information. Can someone give me a hint on this? Thank you
@31leoceara
@31leoceara 2 года назад
I'm not Lisa, but maybe I can help since I have tried all the pencils you mentioned. The Cretacolor pencils are very different from the Conté a Paris pencils. The Cretacolor ones are oil based, they release less "dust" and are not as dark as the CaP ones. They have also a smoother feel when you drag them on the paper. There are 2 grades of CaP Pierre Noir, B and 2B. The former is harder and a little lighter than the latter.

@@31leoceara Do you use the Pierre Noir Conte A Paris?? I also want to try their Carbon pencil, it looks like a warmer black color, which is very cool in my eyes! Have you tried any of these?
@31leoceara
@31leoceara Год назад
@@greekveteran2715 I haven't tried Conte a Paris' carbon pencils. But I have tried Staedtler's Mars Lumograph Black pencils, which are a blending of graphite and carbon. They feel completely different from a charcoal pencil. The best way to describe them is that they are a middle term between a graphite pencil and a charcoal pencil.

Me too, but then I find graphite generally has at least a slight sheen (compared to regular charcoal), so these might be a closer match. I will post a video when I try it! Right now it's all just a theory for me :D

And I can definitely see that I'm probably gonna buy these😍 Quick question Considering that both graphite an charcoal both have a really great light-fast rating. ¿What causes the difference in price between brands? I have a theory but I would like to hear a pro tell me🙂
@jaycarr5906
@jaycarr5906 3 года назад
I know from experience with charcoal its breakage and scratchiness, but with graphite its more the construction of the pencils themselves. I have some cheap pencils that had the paint on the outside melt on me. It made a gooey black mess.

I remember my first cheap graphite pencils having scratchy impurities (in softer 4B and the like) and it was really annoying. I never experienced that with Staedtler and Derwent graphite pencils.

Can you help me? I have painted for several years and have developed my own style. But I didn't learn to paint and draw "properly" before! The proportions of my drawings are still off! After I have painted for at least five years! Now someone wants me to learn drawing...

Ok so then start learning... Btw having your own style is kinda pointless if you cant draw in proportion. Just imo.
