Crete Aquarium is one of the best Aquariums. A journey into the Mediterranean Sea!
The tanks are made of acrylic, NOT glass. The acrylic makes it super clear to see into the tank. Crete Aquarium is located in Gournes, about 15 km east of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete. It is part of the Hellenic centre of Marine Research on the marine environment and its resources. The aquarium was opened in 2005 and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Crete. It was so busy when we went to visit.
Crete Aquarium has 61 tanks that display more than 2,000 organisms from 200 different species. The tanks are designed to recreate the natural habitats of the Mediterranean Sea, such as rocky shores, sandy bottoms, seagrass meadows, coal reefs and open waters.
