Hi John, Yes - espresso shots are usually brewed at 9 - 15 BAR of pump pressure, so 15 BAR is acceptable. It is best to purge the steam wand right after frothing (to clean out any excess milk) and right before frothing (to remove any condensation that may have accumulated). - Sarah

Took me a little while, but I can now make very nice, silky smooth, velvety foam with the good wet paint shine to it. What I do roughly is: -At start crank steam all way up. -slurp for 1-2 seconds. -Keep the jug still with no angle so the milk kind of swirls/ moves wildly. -Dip the wand in deeper frothing noise. This sucks in air through the 2 top holes and makes foam automatically. -Tilt jug ONLY SLIGHTLY upwards so the steam power forces against the jug side and swirls forwards folding foam.

You could certainly take off the plastic panarello attachment if you wanted to try steaming. However, because that does not leave much of a steam wand afterwards, it will very likely be difficult to steam because you may not be able to get close or far enough into the milk and may find a big mess on your hands! :-) The panarello unscrews from the steam wand - good luck! - Miranda

Jackson Guidry here in japan we have these “recycled “ stores where people bring in their unwanted stuff and it’s almost always brand new or close to it. You can’t get anything truly excellent there, eg vintage stereo amps / high quality Instruments BUT you can get decent quality gear for very VERY low prices. And they are often new. Picked up a pair of Nike for my daughter (new ) for $20 and this espresso maker and a ski suit for my kid -ocean pacific -for another $30. Sorry if this doesn’t help you because it’s japan. But hey, maybe pawn shops ? Good luck

I bought one of these last year when the pump on my Breville finally died, and it's been a great little machine. Since I can't afford a good grinder, I've found that it pulls a surprisingly good shot using pre-ground espresso from Ikea that has lots of crema and flavor.

Yes; it does unscrew although the nozzle may not be exactly traditional--it's basically just an open hole with threads on the end for the plastic to screw on to.

@mywytefeet The pressurization is not a traditional extraction, so timing it to ensure the water is passing through at the right rate is not necessary. Your boiler is small so it's going to cool and heat during extraction as you pull water through the brew head and then water from the reservoir into the boiler again. - Kat

@GreekNastyBoy Well, this doesn't have a really huge boiler, so it will take some time to froth. The milk wasn't burnt because it takes awhile to get up to temp; most smaller boiler espresso machines will have similar performance - Kat

I have been meaning to purchase my very own machine for a few years but could not figure out which one. I was looking at a 600.00 machine that comes with the grinder. I got this machine for Xmas and I AM IMPRESSED. You really cannot go wrong for under a 100.00 and it will pay for itself in less than a month based on what I spend on coffees!. Love it.

Using a chilled stainless still pitcher will help you create better foam, yes, but it's not essential. We recommend filling the pitcher to 1/3 of its total volume, but the actual volume you want is dependent on the size of drink you want to make. - Kat

@Bergamoism Switching temps -- releasing steam and pulling cool water into the boiler, then waiting for it to get up to shot temp again and then pull shots. This assures the boiler is always full of water and is not at risk of burning out. - Kat

Harel Davidson This machine does not have a three-way solenoid valve which means the excess water after brewing is not released, causing the watery puck. A three way solenoid releases excess water after brewing. This is just something you'll have to deal with. Not ideal, but it's common for less expensive machines. - Steven
@Replier
@Replier 9 лет назад
Actually if you let the puck sit for just under a minute itll dry out like a normal puck and you wont have a soupy mess. :) I have the EC145 though, and I modded my machine to have a Rancilio Silvia steam wand. Works amazingly :) www.espressoparts.com/rancilio-silvia-old-version-steam-wand As the EC145 does not have a pressurized basket I am looking into modding one for cheap. I have seen a few around for the EC155 with amazing results, so I will do my best to convert it to the EC145
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 12 лет назад
@InsanityIsNormality No; if you want to make milk that is suitable for latte art, etc., you need to select a machine that has a traditional wand as these panarellos produce very frothy foam, not the 'wet paint' texture you're looking for. We are working on a retrofit for the Saeco single boilers that would enable them to function as a traditional wand, and there are some that you can easily adapt their wands to do so. - Kat

I thought that I was pushing my EC155 to its limits by buying pre-ground Lavazza and Alessi. WRONG! I started roasting my own coffee using the "popcorn popper" method (West Bend Popcorn Popery II) and invested in a Bodum Bistro (Burr) Grinder. This morning, my EC155 made some awesome espresso!! I couldn't believe my taste buds!! (not bitter, burnt or sour) My fellow coffee lovers, it's not all about the machine. Truly preparation (fresh roast & grind) is equally as important as the machine!

Hi there! 1 - yes, but you'll need to take it down close to the finest setting; 2 - you could get into the Baratza Encore; 3 - not really, but it will benefit the flavor somewhat if you're grinding fresh each time. I would actually recommend that you stick with your Mini Slim for now, unless you get into non-pressurized extractions later. - Kat

I just got one of these and it doesn't do a bad job for the price. The one cup basket is worthless just use the big one. The tamper sucks. But for the price it makes pretty good espresso shots.
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 11 лет назад
We don't carry the EC50 so I can't do a direct comparison, but the quality and cup quality from each of these MFR's smaller single boilers is pretty similar. I say you choose on looks and budget because they're going to produce similar cups and have similar longevity. Hope that helps! - Kat

@themodularmodular The shot and steam power on the Aroma are better -- a bit bigger boiler that gets hotter and builds up nice pressure for steaming. The Aroma will also last longer, too, so you won't have to buy a new machine for quite awhile. - Kat
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 11 лет назад
For a double shot, fill the basket to the top and level it off; you want to extract two ounces of coffee volume overall. To slow it down, tamp it a little bit. If you steam your milk and then cool it down to pull your shot, it should be up to temperature. The milk fat will affect the foam density; we have found that 2% does the best; your frothing duration is defined by how hot you like your milk. Espresso won't taste the same as percolator coffee since it's a very different prep. - Kat

Crema comes from coffee that's within 2 weeks of roast date. Lavazza espresso probably was roasted months ago. Go to your local roaster or order online. Some great ones directly you can buy from Intelligentsia, Verve, Handsome Coffee Roasters, Counter Culture Coffee, Mad Cap, Stumptown, etc etc
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 12 лет назад
Well, they're wands without any kind of sleeve or additional air intake hole; they'll usually say they have a 'froth enhancer' or something like that. A lot of the smaller single boiler and thermoblock machines have them to improve their frothing functionality due to a lower overall steam pressure. - Kat
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 13 лет назад
@mnix96 Not positive since we don't carry this model and haven't tested it. We found that on these models you had to be careful about how deep into the milk you immersed the panarello -- it was a careful balance :) And then, when you get as much foam as you want, you immerse the whole thing to just bring the milk up to temp. Maybe that will help? Not sure - Kat

@linhlevni Experiment with where you have the panarello in the milk; I know it took us a few tries to get the positioning right and then we were able to get nice microfoam. Try it just resting on the top or buried down lower; I can't recall exactly the right position (this was filmed a few months ago) but it is possible. Sorry I don't have a better pat answer for you! - Kat

You have to use pressurized to use pre-ground coffee or e.s.e. pods. Bottomless is a traditional extraction and will require you to purchase an espresso-grade grinder. - Kat

You could experiment with that, yes. These have little slits so you might need to tape around them or something like that :) - Kat
@SeattleCoffeeGear

@jeffg2020 If the shot is too sour = your grind is too coarse, the tamp is too light, the temp is too cold or the shot came out too quickly; if the shot is bitter = grind is too fine, tamp is to hard, temp is too hot or the shot came out too slowly. Based on tasting the shots, adjust the parameters one at a time and go from there. - Kat

Great to see a review where the milk is steamed BEFORE making the espresso. The manual says to brew espresso first, but my understanding is that steamed milk can afford to wait while espresso needs to be as fresh as possible to make the drink the best.

@jeffg2020 30lb is a general rule of thumb; with pressurized portafilters such as this, that will probably be too much pressure. But experiment with it. The grind should be the consistency of baker's sugar, and you calibrate your grind/tamp by the shot time. Both a single and a double should extract 20 - 30 seconds, and you adjust all the other attributes to get there. Pressurized portafilters take some of that out, but you can still play around with it. - Kat

They are easy to repair. With a la pavoni modified basket you have yourself a great little espresso machine. I bought a demo model for €50, 2 la pavoni 52 mm baskets for €20 and a secondhand Graef 702 for €30. Secondhand tamper €10 Great espresso for €110. Just practice with the grind and the tamping until you get the best taste. Thanks for the informative videos!
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 11 лет назад
Crema is mostly about the coffee; dark roast coffee will have less crema overall and then it's all about how fresh the coffee is. You could experiment with tamping and without tamping to see how that affects the flavor, but if your coffee was roasted more than a couple of months ago, even pressurization won't really help. - Kat
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 12 лет назад
If you're grinding and tamping, etc., something like the Rancilio Silvia would be a good choice. If you don't want to do that and want to use pre-ground or pods, something like the Saeco Via Venezias, while home machines, would end up lasting longer (even though you'd still shorten its life). Or you could do a serious upgrade to something like the Breville Dual Boiler ... - Kat
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 12 лет назад
@eugene1241 You will still have some water in the boiler but you shouldn't do this regularly; if you drain it completely and keep it on/heating, that will damage the boiler, but if just the reservoir ran out and you still had water coming through on the shot -- and you turned off the machine -- you should be fine. Just re-prime it with your next water reservoir to ensure you're working with a full boiler - Kat

Yes - the higher the fat, the more creamy / rich the foam. You'll need to play around with the panarello a bit by first introducing some air and then allowing the foam and milk to mix in. We have a video called Milk Steaming Tips that gives an overview of basic theory. Then, from there, it's just practice :) - Kat

The Saeco Poemia is a great model for under $200. If you stick with a machine that has a pressurized portafilter (like this) you could do any grinder, really; depends on your budget. - Kat
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 11 лет назад
For pre-ground coffee, you will need to use pressurized portafilter; you can't de-pressurize it unless you plan on investing in a grinder, etc. The EC155 is very popular because of the price/features; it's a great little budget machine but it isn't going to win any prizes ;) - Kat

@ragnarocking

It's worth mentioning that this machine kind of has a cult following. Not just because of its wide availability and cheap price but because it's one of the very few sub-$100 machines with an actual pump and the portafilter can be modified to use an unpressurized filter basket (ymmv - unpressurized baskets require a much finer grind not typically achievable with your standard grinder). You can also get rid of the panarello and use a real steel tip, which can yield silkier/creamier microfoam for lattes. I'm on my 3rd in 6yrs (one given away, one broke after 2.5yrs).
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 12 лет назад
Since this machine has a pressurized portafilter, you can't really calibrate based on timing. You will need to calibrate simply on taste -- we have a video about dialing in the shot using a pressurized portafilter that you may want to check out, it will have tips on how you can do this that will apply to your machine. - Kat

We used 20 oz; while you start with 1/3 volume, it will expand with air/foam, so you'll end up with more, etc. - Kat

Crema is largely due to the coffee that you're using. Check out our video on dialing in a shot on a pressurized portafilter to see how to play with your grind, dose and tamp. Hope that helps! - Kat

I think the Poemia will last you longer than this guy, but it is more expensive. I'd go with that model over the two. - Kat
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 12 лет назад
Yes, definitely. While you'll be able to do this for awhile, you're going to shorten the life of the machine; most home-grade espresso machines are designed for less than 10 shots per day in mind and as you increase that, you will decrease the machine's life. I would suggest you get into something a little heavier duty ... or just be prepared to replace these smaller machines every year or so. - Kat
@jergarmar
@jergarmar 13 лет назад
I love this little EC155 guy. I would recommend it for anybody getting started. And you can depressurize the portafilter by unscrewing and removing that backpressure plug. It's not sophisticated, but it can make real espresso and real microfoam with a bit of practice.

Any model that has a panerello (inserts both steam and air) is going to make really frothy milk; you can get around this by submerging the entire end of the wand into the milk and just incorporating steam for heating vs. air for frothing ... which is easier to do on some machines than others. If you want to go with a straight up traditional wand machine, that is your best bet ... but also usually a lot more money. - Kat

Thanks for your review. It helped me decide to purchase an EC155, which I like so far. I am hoping you can help me solve one problem. For the first 2 weeks, the milk frother worked well. Now it is making a higher pitched, screetchier sound, and the milk gets hot but does not develop the light frothiness it once did. I have cleaned the frothing tip; the air holes are not blocked. It makes a good initial blast of dry steam before I put it into the milk. I do not submerge it. Suggestions? Thanks!

Theoretically, they are 'easier to use' when you have these smaller single boilers or if you're using a machine that uses a thermoblock for steaming. I don't know why a lot of the manufacturers went this way with machines over the past few years, but I have to assume it's because learning how to stretch milk can be difficult and they must have received a lot of customer support calls on the subject ;) - Kat

Half way through the whirpool won't appear, but keep going and it will near the end. Just try different angles, even holding it in the centre of the jug with no angle will fold the foam into the milk. All depends on how big/ small the jug is too. I might be putting a video up soon about it because I've found a fair few tricks, i'm almost perfecting latter art with it and that took some practice with this little machine!

@entered2exit It is likely the grind -- if you can go finer, that will give you better results. You want to tweak the grind and tamp in order to effect the quality of the shot; the water pump / pressure should remain constant and you calibrate against that. - Kat

@MightyCarnac It could be that you simply don't like the coffee beans or roast they use at these establishments. Steam machines really are a hybrid and are more similar to the old stovetop espresso makers -- not a traditional espresso extraction, really just strong coffee. If you like that flavor then you might want to stick with a steam machine or going with a stovetop. Too many variables at play to say definitively if this machine would make better coffee than the cafes you mention - Kat

It's difficult to do so with these small single boilers with panarellos, definitely. - Kat

@GreekNastyBoy Hmmm -- the results on this machine aren't amazing but you can still get okay froth with it. The big thing is how you position the panarello -- fully submerging it will result in no froth at all, just steamed milk, so see if messing around with the positioning improves your results. Otherwise, if you can make a video showing your technique I can give you better tips - Kat

@Sam- in lieu of kats reply - there are videos on you tube where people have put standard 6mm wand tips on the end as a replacement. Hang on I will find the video

With a pressurized portafilter, you stop based on volume; check out our video on dialing in a shot on a pressurized portafilter for more tips on how you can make your coffee taste richer / stronger using a system like this. Hope that helps! - Kat
