Crews began removing eight decades-old cherry trees near Seattle’s Pike Place Market on Tuesday.
The city plans to replace the trees on Pike Street between First and Second avenues with new cherry trees after community pushback over their removal. Activists said the trees have historical and cultural relevance, bearing witness to the Japanese Americans who worked at the market before World War II and the incarceration of Japanese Americans during the war.
"The entire issue is the recognition of this history and heritage and the fact that the Japanese American community has been here a long time," Kyle Kinoshita of the Seattle Japanese American Citizens League said.

Japan has a ton of older cherry trees as they are treasured. Clearly these trees were fine and the city is just lazy, incompetent at tree care, or both.

Sadly, these trees might’ve been photographed by tourist once a year, but were being scarred, urinated upon, and leaned upon by many transients in the area. I walked by this block a few days ago, and took a photograph of the machinery in the background and the citation posted on the trees and thought it was a sad site to lose just before the blossoms hit, but as 40 year old trees, they simply couldn’t withstand the abuse of those who hang out on this block. hopefully the new bike lanes another improvements will dissuade this block from being the hang out for shoplifters (and their “wares”) and drug users.

What a complete shame. I remember when they were planted.

In and around Olympia the trees are being downed. Especially around on and off ramps which is such a bummer as the trees kept the air clean around the idle areas.

That sounds like a beautiful memory that you remember when they were planted.

Good. These trees were old and in decline. Soon or later, they would have had to have been removed. I'm glad the city has made the decision to replace them with younger cherry trees that can be enjoyed by future generations.

Institutional decision making that emerges locally, state wide and Federally, are increasigly short cited and destructive; this modern phenomenon is most acute on the West coast where fleeing residents tell the tale by the millions:)

Its ok . No one is denying the existence of japanese people in the US. I dont understand why the japanese man is associating himself to the cherry tree. Cherry trees were taken by the japanese when they colonized Korea in the early 1919. Cherry blossom originated from Korea not japan. japanese army took a lot of natural resources from korea back then. A few are tree logs, dogs and cows which they bred with another cow which we now know and call waygu beef.

Eh they probably didn’t plan the development of the trees uprooting sidewalk and streets so it’s got to be done.
