Crime. Homelessness. Growth - Rapid City Mayor Talks Issues and Growth

I sat down with Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun and asked the hard questions people thinking to move to Rapid City are asking:
What's with the high crime rate?
Is Rapid City safe for families?
What about the homelessness problem?
Are there plans for SMART growth?
What is your vision for Rapid City moving forward?
It was a great conversation with the Mayor - his passion for the city, people in general, and moving forward in a smart way was very evident.
It's a long one but it's a good one to listen to all the way through.

I’m from California, currently in Texas and looking to relocate, it’s a breath of fresh air to hear a mayor talk this way. I’d vote for him over and over again

I agree. A few things were political answers, but one can only work within the system. I loved to hear his vision of Rapid City. 💓

For my family, it started with a vacation. There are many beautiful places to live but the people and how they live is what differentiates Rapid City from elsewhere. You have some of the amenities of a big city but the feel of a small town.

My young adult son was mugged in Main Street Square (heart of downtown) at 6am by a group of 3 people who made gang affiliated statements during the mugging. They even took his needed medication, and the ID he needed to get more meds. There are no less than 5 cameras mounted in site of where he was mugged. I am told by police none of them captured anything. They stole air-pods which can be GPS tracked. We have told the police the location of the air-pods 4 different times and they have yet to resolve this. I can see where the offenders are on a map, but police can't resolve it. Be prepared to deal with some pretty hostile characters and very little police help if you move here. I live and work downtown. The story above is the worse incident we've had, but we deal with characters and their hostility constantly. Depending on the season and time of day, it's a part of setting foot outside.

Great content. On crime, I agree completely that RCPD and county sheriff depts are very effective. Breaking the law is taken very seriously and there is accountability. Having “escaped” from a blue state where my family felt unsafe in what used to be peaceful suburbia five years ago has turned into a zero cash bail, diversion program-dominated, MSM news-suppressed revolving door of emboldened criminals that govt officials prioritized looking after the best interest of criminals only. Definitely not the case here and we feel much safer in RC. As for the panhandling, I can’t emphasize how bad the city looks. I get the free speech angle but what exists now reflects a city failing big time, private or govt, to manage the issue. I really hope that collectively a better solution is implemented because what exists now will quickly escalate into reasons to avoid supporting downtown businesses. No one wants to feel any intimidation on the streets, block after block after block. City officials may be missing the boat on the criticalness of this issue. Good work Tristan!

Thanks for your honest comment! I really think the way he said "free speech issue I'm told" that he'd prefer to just make it go away. hahaha It was an honor to have this interview for sure. Hopefully we'll work on making this place safe for families.

Comparatively speaking, RC is VERY SAFE. Communities, law enforcement, and courts are all rowing in the same direction. You break the law and there is accountability. Yes the mayor’s response on the pan handling was a politician’s answer, but was accurate. But the optics of the reality in downtown reflects failure in the resources regardless if the issue driving the problem is legitimate need or in some cases individuals making personal decisions to choose that lifestyle, the latter of which should never negatively impact the community at large.

I've been looking at Rapid City for a few years...would love to move there. Doesn't seem like there are a lot of high paying or even medium pay IT jobs out there though. But boy, I'd love to get out of this circus in Michigan.

IT jobs are tough for sure. My bro in law had troubles finding a good job after his first job went away. Hospital and Black Hills Energy are your best bets. 👌

Rapid City is beautiful and friendly. Affordability IMO is on the difficult side. That said, can't wait to come back and do the tourist thing. Thank you for the video Tristan.
