Jimmy sits down with Wizards of the Coast Creative Producer Lauren Bond and Consulting Loremaster Jay Annelli for a behind-the-scenes look at the world building and story design for Magic's latest set. Find out how they created the five families, the city, its characters, and its history, and to what degree those decisions affect gameplay design. The Convergence of Cryiss is my favorite army for Warmachine as its an army of Art Deco religious robots! So I'm very much a sucker for Art Deco!

I will never understand this logic. I love beer. I also love ice cream. But I don't love ice cream in my beer. That I love two things doesn't mean I will also automatically love the combination of those two things. Combining two good things sometimes results in a bad thing. I love both football and Magic, but I wouldn't love a football-themed Magic set.

What I think would be cool is that if Magic returned to Capenna, We could do a reverse of Kamigawa and so instead of going into the future we go back in time into Old Capenna

I would love that. I think New Capenna is way too modern looking to fit with the rest of the world of MTG, 20th century America is perhaps the least fantastical and most mundane setting I can think of, so its inclusion in a fantasy game just feels wrong. 'Old Capenna' on the other hand seems like a place I would absolutely love to explore and that would mesh incredibly well with the rest of the game.

From what we've been shown so far, New Capenna is a total home-run for worldbuilding: the way the team has reflected, echoed, and/or drawn inspiration from its core sources and eras is pretty phenomenal. One of the most exciting sets in a while! (and kamigawa was pretty damn exciting lol)

the conflict with planeswalkers aligning or being around their opposite mana families is seen in vivien working with Obscura and Tezzeret using the undercity and the cover of The Riveteers to hide his work (although this is less direct)

I’m loving these behind the scene look at the world building in both in lore aspect as well as how the process of making the lore. This also is reminding me of Tarkir which started as a note bout Sarkhans home plane having no dragons in the Alara book.

This interview about the world building and art was WAY BETTER than the one for Kamigawa that attempted to pander too much to "culture", this interview was very focused on the set, how they integrated the colors and the world itself, very good PS: I can see the possbility of a Prequel set, in which you see what let to the creation of New Cappena and fall of the kingdom era

tbh first i was a bit alienated by the modern setting, but the longer i look at the art the more i like it. now im at the point where i think thats one of the most beautiful sets in my eyes. who thought that magic and art deco could mix that well.

Jetmir is AMAZING. Even if you only have Jetmir and 8 1/1 tokens, you're already dealing _80 TRAMPLE DAMAGE._ Of course, all it takes is one little Cinderclasm and everything just gets reduced to ashes...

@@Death_by_Tech At 9 Creatures Jetmir essentially gives every attacking creatures +3/+0 Vigilance ,Trample and Doublestrike. so thats 8x 4/1 tokens = 64 damage Jetmir himself 8/4= 16 damage So yeah, Total 80 damage on board

I'm not a traditional Tolkien-style Fantasy fan. With Neon Dynasty and New Copena exploring urban environments and finding inventive ways to integrate magic into the setting really appeals to me.

it seems like they've done a great job at making these feel distinct from the alara shards, but i kind of wish they used a different primary color, like how tarkir and ikora had different primary colors for the clans and the triomes respectively. but yeah, nice to see the worldbuilding and all that up close, looking forward to the new set!

This was probably the last set that was really amazing in my opinion. The five families were unique and fun. The lore revolving around Elspeth and Rakdos and Urabrask was interesting. There were some amazing fun cards. And, most importantly, it had a KICK ASS OST.

Hope the Maestros, being more vampire focused, will get more usage of Blood tokens. Interesting mechanic, but needs more support. I know that there isnt much cross reference of mechanics between sets, but its a solid opportunity.

@@aaronreeve1414 Yeah, there was a good chunk of outrage from some loud people, but they were far far from the majority of magic players. Most players probably didn't even hear of those cards. I would say they fixed the issue by reprinting functional magic-branded copies going forward. And regarding Alchemy ... I think that's just a case of the product being for a different audience. Casual players tend to enjoy it, and it's for them primarily. And while it took a while, they have announced to revamp the formats by introducing a non-Alchemy eternal format, while giving the pro crowd a new professional tournament system. It usually pays off to wait a bit and see how a company reacts to feedback instead of going all captain of scorched earth.

So now I'm not hating on this set, but not really in love with it still. Such a strange setting for a Magic plane, to be honest, in my opinion. Still, I could have fun with the Brokers and the Druids, perhaps. Yeah, we'll see Capena, we'll see...
