Rap and metal have been hand in hand since the 80s as social outcast music being blamed for society's ills; we have joined forces successfully in music too many times to count and have respected one another. On another note, I’m sure the logic behind the request for this legislation is similar to being convicted on your word alone. I’ve heard some rappers say in interviews that their lyrics are inspired by what they’ve heard or witnessed and some rappers be accused of not really living their lyrics while some have admitted to being pushed by record executives to create violent or criminal personas. In the past, if these people were in any sticky situations, like Tupac’s rape case, they’d be convicted on their lyrical personas. It was largely believed that his lyrical persona made it impossible for him to get a fair trial given that women largely reported how respectful their interactions with him were. Drake and Kanye’s success should disprove the need to go this route, and the barriers to entry are not what they used to be, so I don’t understand why this keeps being the play for some. It’s such a waste.

I know when I was a kid, older people would go off over some of the lyrics of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc. Long hair, sex and some graphic lyrics about Vietnam and so forth set my dad off many times. Now I am the old one. And I have to wonder what effect this culture that glorifies guns, gangs and street violence has on kids. Yes, I understand that much of it is real and is art taken from the artists' experience. I respect that and I believe in free expression. But when I see guns being celebrated and very graphic violence depicted, it makes me wonder. I would like to hear what others think about this. Peace.
