My son suffers from a mental illness but, he refuses to accept it. This has been going on for years and years. He's been hospitalized several times in the past 10 years. He recently said to me "Imagine looking down the barrel of a loaded gun and praying that the person on the other side pulls the trigger." My response was "it's called suicide by cop." He insists that he is not suicidal but how am I, as his parent, supposed to respond to that? He's home now. And the job has fallen onto my shoulders to make sure he is okay, takes his meds, continues with his therapy, and stays out of the hospital. It's overwhelming at times. Having said that, there is no way in Hell I'd give him access to a deadly weapon. I worry about my kitchen knives...

As a psychologist, I hope that you are getting therapy too. Self care is very important. You are doing all that you can as a parent and you should have support as well. Being in your position is very stressful and I hope that you take care of yourself too. You should have some healthy coping mechanisms. I sincerely wish you the best and hope you take as good of care for yourself and you do your son.

I’m sorry you and your son are dealing with this. I’m in a similar boat. But unlike the Crumbley’s, I got my kid in to therapy as soon as there were issues and I’ve been staying on top of his meds, even when he doesn’t want to take them. I don’t think my son would ever hurt anyone else, but I don’t want him to hurt himself either. So, we don’t have any guns. At times I’ve had to stay with my kid 24/7 to be sure he won’t hurt himself. (It’s not so bad. We talk or distract ourselves with movies) Hospitalizing my kid was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but we did it because it was necessary. Basically, when my kid started struggling, the easiest decision in the world was to get him help. It was so easy to decide that this was more than we could handle and to call a therapist. The therapist then referred us to a psychiatrist. The decision to hospitalize my kid was hard mostly because he and I are very close and I was scared for him. But it wasn’t difficult to choose to get him help. I’ve had multiple meetings with his school counselor. Usually if I’m meeting with the counselor in person rather than talking over the phone, that means they want me to take him home for the day. And I do. I just don’t understand these parents sitting on their hands, doing nothing, while their child screams for help.

The Crumbley’s claim that they never had a clue that their son was capable of this behavior, then why when they heard that there is an active shooter at Oxford, they both immediately thought it could be Ethan. Jennifer is texting Ethan “don’t do it”, meanwhile, James leaves the school area to race home to look for the gun. No other parent with children at that school acted like the Crumbley’s.

I am a teacher, and my district is not far away from where this incident occurred, so I am very informed about all aspects of this case that have been released. In fact, after this happened, many districts in the general area of Oxford had fake threats called into the schools, which led to schools deciding to close. With that said, as a parent and a teacher who has seen way too many school shootings on the news, when the charges were initially filed against the Crumbleys, I was conflicted about placing the blame of the son’s actions on his parents. However, the more I learned, I was proud of Prosecutor McDonald’s decision to attempt to hold them accountable. Obviously everyone cannot know all there is to know about each case, but my recommendation is that if you are conflicted about the decision to attempt to hold the Crumbley parents accountable for their son’s actions and/or how the juries were able to convict them, familiarize yourself with this case. I feel you will quickly learn how badly the ‘parents’ not only prioritized themselves over their son many times, but also seemed to intentionally ignore a plethora of warning signs showing Ethan was struggling in a multitude of alarming ways, desperately craved for the attention of his parents, and was ultimately disregarded and failed by them. Tragically, it appears the actions/inactions of the parents sadly led to unimaginable and (in my opinion) avoidable consequences.

I will tell u 1 thing. I'm a single mom with 4 teen age children. I work a fill time job then come home and take care of my kids. I know the importance of working and holding down a job so I can afford to keep the bills paid and Food on the table. 2 of my daughters suffer from mental health issues. Since this case, I think twice about leaving my daughter at school when problems arise. The key, I think is transparency. I make sure everyone knows that I am doing everything I possibly can for my children-so that we are all on the same page. The Crumblys just didn't pay attention to their child. He needed attention and help- they did absolutely NOTHING. And what they did do was buy the gun, show him how shoot and leave it unlocked. This is yet another tragedy that could've been avoided if time, attention and due diligence was given. Very sad 😔

French horn is one of the more difficult instruments!! Good job -- he must be very talented. Many universities give scholarships or "talent grants" to instrumentalists to play in Wind Ensemble or Orchestra and you don't even have to major in music. You could be a math major, or science, English, anything you want, and still get the scholarship. It's all merit based. All you usually have to do in return is play in the ensembles, which is so fun and where you'll meet a lot of your life-long friends. Twenty-five years ago I got a full tuition and fees scholarship to college on oboe, but majored in psychology. However, most of my friends were in the music department and I ended up with a minor in music!!;

Yrs ago, I went to my mom, told her I felt like I was going crazy. I kept Ruminating on the words *"You're a burden! You're just such a burden! When Penelope goes, you should too... you're nothing but a burden"* Anytime there was silence, that's all I heard on a continuous loop in my head, all day- every day for a few weeks. My head was telling me that when my bulldog passed, I should just be 'done' too. My mom unmuted the episode of dateline when the commercial was over and finished watching for the following 43 minutes until it was done; as I literally laid on the kitchen floor in a crumpled pile, bawling & hyperventilating, not knowing why my brain wanted me to just be done. Sadly, that was Penelope's MIGHTY SOUL that eclipsed the Sun on her way to Heaven last Monday 😢 but she helped get her Mommy to a much better & safer space before she had to go! I'm crushed but overall I'm doing better than I anticipated; especially looking back to THOSE days. I don't know how my mom could've sat there watching some random show on some random woman who was ended by her random husband in some random way while I was fighting a battle of life & death btwn my head and my heart 🤷🏻‍♀️

For those who aren't from Michigan, keep in mind that these convicts WILL serve at least 10 years. There's no good time in Michigan, or really any other way to get less time than the minimum of 10 years. This is because Michigan has a law called the Truth In Sentencing Law, which prohibits the government from letting people out before their minimum sentence is served. There are a few exceptions to Truth In Sentencing, but they're only available for non-violent, non-DUI first-offense single felonies, and are a big pain in the ass. Things like "boot camp"s and the like.

We know the law treats those who accompanied a person who committed a crime as equally guilty. You can say you didn't know he went in the store to rob it, you didn't know he had a gun, but the law says you are just as guilty as he is. The recorded phone calls prove how truly sick the parents are. They undoubtedly abused their son until he turned into a mad dog. No one is addressing WHY this kid was so fucked up? But that recorded phone call by dear daddy gives us a slice of who these parents really are. They didn't ignore the signs their son was cracking up, they incubated it, in my opinion.

I just want to add, though. Something’s bugging me. When I was 12, I lost my big brother - my only sibling. It was a climbing accident n the Jemez mountains. Partly his fault, partly someone else’s. I had no hopes and dreams for him that I lost. My loss wasn’t about his future or mine. My loss wasn’t about anything like that, nor was that the case for my DEVASTATED parents. It was about losing HIM, the person, the boy I lived with, fought with, let teach me things like math and monopoly, who occupied the bedroom next to mine, played a trumpet, put up with me getting sick on car-trips and taught me how to swim. My way of dealing with it was to forget my childhood for the next 15 years. The loss is not of a future, it’s of a PERSON. The loss never goes away, at least it hasn’t for me. Thank you for caring enough to open us up to the questions. 🕯️🕯️🕯️

Same thing? Didn't she simply say she wanted alec baldwin in jail? When it comes to baldwin, he should not be jailed as an actor pulling the trigger, that would be ridiculous. He was the producer on set and if he knew the armorer or anyone else was fucking around with the guns, that is what should make him liable. It matters what he knew about the misuse of the guns by random people on set to shoot cans or whatever in the off hours. Other producers should be charged too. But I think they are actually just trying to say it doesn't matter that he was an actor relying on professionals to keep things safe, they seem to be arguing that because he pulled the trigger, he is guilty no matter what.

This crossed the threshold of mental illness for me. When you supply someone with a firearm, and they are showing all the signs of potential violence, you screwed up. A charge for them both is the right thing to do, like you had said. Gross negligence on the parents' part.

When I first heard that parents had been sentenced to jail over their son's actions I was "WTF?!" Then I heard the details. I have a neighbor who periodically talks about wanting to carry a gun in our Constitutional carry state. Every time she starts talking about it I redirect and distract her from the idea. Because I know her - the gun will get taken, the gun will get taken and turned against her, she'll go charging out and shoot at someone messing with her car, she will brandish in the local Walmart - any number of scenarios. She's not crazy, but just doesn't get how careful you have to be if you are carrying. Some people just shouldn't have guns. I can't imagine giving a gun to someone like their son.

Nothing is as painful as losing a child. Nothing. I will never forget the day my son was diagnosed with lymphoma. Even that, just thinking about mortality as it applied to child was hellish in and of itself. Worst day of my life and I've had more than my share of bad days. After two years of chemo and radiation, my son was cured and now he is a 30 year old man. We are so grateful for that. But... We had to watch another family whose child was diagnosed with leukemia around the same time as our son. We watched that kid go through almost the same regimen. We watched him go from recovering and looking healthy like our son. Then we watched the kid relapse. After that there was more harsher chemo, a bone marrow transplant and conversations with medical centers all over the country, trying to find the thing that could cure their son. That thing never arrived. After 6 years of fighting it, He lost his battle with cancer and died at age 11. It ripped that family apart. We've lost touch with them but it ended the marriage. The older brother takes solace in volunteering to help kids with cancer. I can imagine the pain. But then again I can't. Eventually, when their sentence is over these two nominees can try and re-establish and have contact with their son. The victims will never see their child again. That will leave a gigantic hole in their hearts hearts and thus I believe the maximum sentence y allowed by law. Nothing is more traumatizing to parents to and siblings tan the loss of a child like this. I pray the parents who l ost their children can recover from the grief. RIP to the victims.

Lord there’s an active AMBER alert for a 13 yr old and her 5 year old sibling in my state, right now. Reading the social media comments are devastating. “Allegedly” the 13 year old kidnapped her 5 yr old little brother and drove off in mom’s SUV. Last seen at 9pm last night…..but the amber alert didn’t go out until 2 today. The “adults” in the situation are busy hurling threats at one another in very, very painfully hard to understand broken “hood” speak. Multiple family members have made posts and I quote “don’t be comin at me wit no questions!”. When quite literally 2 children are missing (the vehicle has since been found) but they can’t pull their heads out of their rear ends to even focus on….idk….the KIDS?!? What 13 yr old rebellious teen “allegedly” is taking off for a joyride with a 5 year old in tow?!? Other family members are bragging about how they used to be stealing cars at 10 and could drive as if that’s something to be proud of?!?!! Smh. I hope the children are found safe and I hope a thorough investigation and/or charges are brought against the “parents”. It just hurts my soul for kids who have selfish, grown adults still acting like they are missing out on partying or whatever when their focus should be on their babies. I can’t relate and will never

To me...the most important thing is not what they knew or when or that they had lots of extracurricular activities that did not include their child. They didn't appear to care enough about their child to actually get to KNOW their child etc. But, put all that aside. The bottom line is not even that they bought him a gun and ammo. The bottom line is THEY DID NOT MAKE SURE THE GUN WAS NOT ACCESSABLE. They had a lock but didn't use it. And it appears that they also just left the gun lying around. Literally any RESPONSIBLE gun owner would keep their gun in one place, the SAME place for the majority of the time they were not using it. And they would keep it locked, unloaded, in a safe, or however it needed to be so the WRONG person absolutely could not get to it. The Crumblys didn't appear to do any of that. Therefore they are responsible for the crime they assisted their son in committing!

The school might not legally be responsible, especially since the parents kept a lot of important information from teachers and admin that would help them better identify the situation. I can see wanting more visibility in schools and awareness, but schools should not be held responsible for a parent's unwillingness to parent. It feels like a violation/overstepping of rights.

These parents failed their son every step of the way. Instead of getting him the help he was begging for, they bought him a freaking gun. Jennifer Crumbley actually said on the stand their son was an "oopsie baby." When he asked his father for therapy, the father told him to suck it up. When he mentioned the same thing to his mother, she laughed. He told his parents he was hallucinating and hearing voices. If one of my children tell me they're hearing voices, I'm taking my child to a therapist! These parents did not take accountability for buying their son a 9mm gun, not locking the gun up, laughing off his requests for therapy, ignoring the fact he TOLD them he was hearing voices. They spent most of their free time at a barn with their horses, they left their son at home... by himself. I have no sympathy for James or Jennifer Crumbley, I was really hoping the judge would sentence them for longer. *Ethan Crumbley is getting treatment for his mental health in prison now. He is apparently on multiple daily medications now. *The school called the parents in to address the drawing on his math assignment. This would have been a good time for the parents to let the school know they bought him a gun. *We just passed a law in Michigan, where this case happened, guns must be locked up where a minor cannot gain access to the weapon.

Having previously studied this case, and as a mother of (now grown) children, I was appalled that these parents went back to work and did not take their son home and immediately start searching for mental health care for him, that day. The school should have insisted that they do so, in my opinion. The mother had taken the boy to the shooting range, then left the gun in the trunk of her car - not secured. The dad is obviously an idiot, so nothing much needs to be said. Both parents were self absorbed, and ignored their son, for the most part. Then, they fled and hid after the shooting. They knew they were in trouble, in other words. If a person leaves a firearm where a child can get it and someone gets hurt, it is not unheard of for that person to be held responsible for not properly securing the gun.

They could argue it was stolen, that's as dumb as saying if someone breaks into your house and Steals your gun you are responsible for all the crimes committed with the gun
@mcnamaraky

@@CapedBojjithat's not even close to the same thing. If they left this gun out and he was 7 and shot himself it'd be their fault. That's the difference: no one broke in and stole this. They left it out in the open for a troubled kid to kill a bunch of people. He didn't break in and steal it: they straight up gave it to him.

@@nobodynoone2500 that's literally what the trial determined they did, and what 12 jurors said they did, and what the judge said in her sentencing remarks. "Be a better person." Yeah, I'm a terrible person, thanks for that advice. Maybe someone should've given the Crumbley's that advice before they left a gun lying around a troubled kid who murdered people with it. Edit: let's also not forget afterwards they took all of his money, their money, fled, and hid in another city. Nothing guilty about that.

I also do think the school was neglectful in continuing to let him attend. I think these questions need to be explicitly asked “does he have access to a firearm?” “Has your child had fantasies of killing?” Also, when a child is struggling in this way, the answer isn’t to continue to let them keep struggling. We say, 1) no longer can they attend without support (it’s a risk to the other kids) 2) here are some resources - we can create a plan to getting him back in and in a better spot or in a school with more support.

I appreciate you stating that although you legally own guns, and are a responsible owner, you also state truth…guns are absolutely dangerous in far too many hands in America. Legal gun ownership comes with huge responsibilities, and not everyone is willing to use even the most basic common sense.

I get that this verdict is important because it sets a precendent, but it didn't shock me as much as it seemed to for some... I didn't see the difference here with the gun and something like alcohol. If a bar/establishment can be held responsible for serving/continuing to serve an obviously intoxicated person, they can be held responsible if that person ends up dying/driving drunk and killing others or themselves (obviously not held responsible for what the drunk person does if they don't serve/add to the existing issue). I might be wrong, but I assume parents would also be held responsible if they provided alcohol to their under 21 child and the kid later drove away from home without their knowledge and killed someone in an accident; the responsibility would be even heavier if there was evidence friends and teachers had pointed out the child had substance abuse issues, showed up to class drunk...etc. Hoping this encourages more lax/careless parents to take situations like this more seriously, but only time will tell...
@PeteOtton
@PeteOtton 5 месяцев назад
This is perhaps a better analogy than the lack of care they provided. I said that if the kid had had menningitis and they refused to get/provide care they could and should have been charged fro neglect, except here their neglect resulted in several people's deaths.

It's heartwarming how close you are with your son and hearing the compliments you give him at the start of most videos. It always reminds me of my dad who would brag about me or compliment me most chances he could. It can feel embarrassing at times when you're still young but as you grow older you realize how few people in your life do that for you and how special it is. Especially after that loved one is no longer with you. I'm sure your son will keep that with him for the rest of his life among other great things from you.
