@@ikexbankai No. Interesting subject matter done in the most heavy handed & cliched manner possible. The kid actor was in over his head. Terrible terrible terrible ending too.
This kind of video makes winning Best Picture look so much like an exercise in hacking an algorithm that it's hard to decide whether that's really what it is or if the appearance that that's the case is just a by-product of the phenomenon of Oscars predicting.
Also it's funny that Damien Chazelle told Diego Calva to travel the world as much as possible because he was gonna become famous and couldn't go anywhere after Babylon😭
I remember before and after The Whale premiered at Venice and TIFF that it would not get nominated for Best Picture because Darren Aronofsky films tended to be polarizing and the reviews didn’t convince me that it would get nominated for Best Picture. It was kind of like The Eyes of Tammy Faye where even if not everyone loved the movie, people still loved the performance.
Same with Coda...... Everyone praised Power of the dog and Kodie Smith McPhee for best supporting actor and Bafta totally turned the whole thing around.....
They didn’t think Banshees would be competitive and the entirety of last year, I was like, “Why do they and FilmDrunk think Martin McDonough will not produce a masterpiece?”
Honestly really cool to see a peek at your record keeping, as someone who makes a bunch of dumb lists for no reason, seeing that sort of data organized properly just makes me happy lol.
Your low expectations for "Tar" were a mystery, incomprehensible. With Todd Fields record, it was a no brainer that it was going to be a major contender. That reasoning of yours was baffling!
My takeaway after EEAAO is that the basic formula of an Oscar winning film hasn't changed: It still goes to films that have critical acclaim, at least some level of commercial success, a well-liked and "sellable" cast and crew, an uplifting story, and socially conscious message. However, there were such extra barriers that have been weakened. The biggest change that EEAAO made is that genre films and movies with "out there" comedy are now suddenly in play for Oscar wins, as long as they also check the five boxes I mentioned. So which movies check those five boxes? We don't know the critical and commercial success yet, but these are the movies with potential: -The Color Purple (though a little derivative) -The Holdovers maybe (although cast and crew is a little weak) -Poor Things (depending of course on the story) -Saltburn (might be too niche interest) -Barbie (if uplifting lol, think it will be too mired in irony) -Next Goal Wins
I think The Holdovers is gonna happen Would love it if Next Goal Wins is actually very good after all the delays, if it’s meh or bad that would be like the final nail in the coffin ☹️ We’ll see
I would say you guys were mostly solid since nobody knew a dame thing at that time. But I wanna praise Justin cause he actually had some good takes like All Quite getting into adapted!
I don’t see it getting nominated for best picture. It’s another ensemble movie by Wes Anderson. The academy doesn’t like ensemble pieces by Wes Anderson. It might get some techs, but I’m not seeing it get anything beyond that.
I wish she was, but it's very unlikely. Condon had BAFTA and mass hype as the potential one win for her film, Bassett had narrative and hype. I imagine 4th was a toss up between her and Hsu, but I know a lot of people went to bat for Hsu
Your accuracy in regards to "Everything All At Once" was astonishing. Perhaps because I did not like the movie. Nevertheless, it freaks me out that you both anticipated the awards juggernaut that it became!
Long time love for Nighy and the feeling he was a really overdue actor. Lack of clear competition, and an assured screenplay nom. He made the most sense when the dust cleared as 4th place and he's had a hell of a run as an actor
I watched it a couple weeks ago, it actually is a very good movie and performance although I’m still a little surprised that he got in literally everywhere
proud to have predicted both screenplay winners eeao and women talking because they made sense in their categories eeao was the cool genre bending screenplay that has a social message in vein of get out and pym and women talking was dialogue heavy movie in vein of the father
Not only was "Green Book" not great; it was quite bad. Why mince words? Linguistics are important, but mostly to decipher nonsense reasoning. If you liked "Green Book", just say it!
i think the real lesson to pull from the babylon disaster is that you cannot put too much stock in young or inexperienced directors. chazelle is still in his 30s, which in hollywood is considered a baby. at the beginning of last year y'all were putting him side-by-side with scorsese and spielberg like they were at the same level when it was just never true. those guys are in their 70s/80s and have earned legendary reputations from decades of consistent greatness, leading now to their positions as oscar darlings who can almost never NOT be nominated, whereas chazelle is not even 40 and has only made 2 big oscar vehicles. The same mistake was made with regards to florian zeller.
i think ' The Son ' was good , the story it was trying to tell and the conclusion that was excellent . But yes when they went in to make a movie it fell apart somewhere . Most probably the dialogues and the way they choose to direct it.
I am still a little surprised that Sadie Sink didn’t get a supporting actress nomination. She had the hype from Stranger Things and lowkey had a better performance than Stephanie Hsu.
