If you only cried at the end, you're doing pretty well, I'd say. I'm a crier, and I catch myself shedding tears constantly while playing because there'll be a cute moment and then my brain helpfully reminds me ZACK IS DOOMED, THIS WILL NOT LAST. Playing Crisis Core is watching a heartrendingly gorgeous train-wreck in slow motion.
@@SupremeViola i knew the ending would happen, I honestly don't know how. But as I said playing through the game as Zack just made me love him more! And his impact on Cloud!
I played Crisis Core some 13 years ago when I was recovering from a motorcycle accident, so it has a special place for getting me through some pretty boring weeks. Being a die hard FF7 fan, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna play this remaster soon.
I'm looking forward to the music arrangements. "The Price of Freedom" and "The Burdened" just hit me in the feels in all the right places at all the right times.
This is so comprehensive and well done that I don't wanna be 'that guy' but it's probably better if you catch this sooner than later, it says "1: Gamplay". at 3:14
Nomura saying that they didn't want to remaster CC due to continuity with Remake is rich given that the original CC messed with the continuity of FF7OG for some key characters.
@@TerryFGM You missed my point here. I was just saying that the original Crisis Core messed with the continuity of the original FF7 so Nomura has no ground to stand on saying they care about continuity with Crisis Core Reunion as it relates to FF7R.
@@Redcloudsrocks Not really. FF7R basically has a built-in 'get out of jail free' card with the Whispers so the prequel-related timeline elements (aka CC) really don't seem to matter at this point continuity-wise. Also the fact that they didn’t seem to actually change much story-wise with CCR (can’t confirm since I won’t be buying this game) but that it was an actual remaster that is considered officially part of the Remake project clearly demonstrates that they _don’t_ think that there are continuity issues and that the statement is a facade. I think Square needed an excuse that they ‘wouldn’t be making a CC remaster’ so that they could keep the hype on FF7R and not detract from it. Square wouldn't be dumb enough to talk about even the possibility of this game over FF7R which has a greater fanbase and therefore market. FF7 is a much more recognizable and loved story compared to CC so even if FF7R hadn't gone the route of a remake, they still wouldn’t have talked about releasing an updated CC just for sales and hype alone. I think it was mostly spoilers about FF7R not being a remaster that they were worried about because they wanted as many people as possible to jump on the bandwagon. Plus so many gamers are completionists that if Square got people to play the first installment of Remake (an easy thing to do with all of the hype), players might be more willing to buy the next installments.
@@xfairfaeriex”They don’t seem to change the story much” ??? the game isn’t out yet and you aren’t even gonna play it, are you really just deciding it’s gonna be exactly the same from like a two minute trailer??
Thanks for the review. I pre-ordered the game and I'm mostly looking forward to reliving this story in a fresh new way. I played it when it came out on PSP and I barely remember any of the story beats.
@@anthonyfernandez82 yeah... I feel like Genesis is hateable because he is a poetry snob. Likewise, Squall was hateable because he was a lonewolf. A "cowboy" of sorts. These are stereotypes that can be mistaken for having antisocial tendencies.
@@anthonyfernandez82 haha, I feel you. I didn't understand him the first time around. I have been studying sociology and social work quite a bit since then, so hopefully I will be able to better comprehend. Gotta admit though, I am not big on poetry. Especially when it is pretentious! Lol
Eh. A large part of the reason I fell in love with Zack, personally, was because of Rick Gomez's performance. That is now gone. And the new VA is more grating on the ears than nails on a chalkboard.
@@BabysitterSky There should still be clear distinctions between reviews and retrospective. A review should not spoil major plot points of a game (or any form of media) where as a retrospective tends to be for people who have already completed said media. Regardless, any video containing spoilers should be warned about at the start. I've clicked off several videos giving such warnings when there's a chance I might consume that media.
My friend has been telling me to play this for years, and now I will. Hearing about this has convinced me, I need to try it, the time is now, I'm going to get it as soon as I can and complete it.
When I first played FF7 I named Cloud "Zack" (cuz that's me!!) - it was very confusing! :-) Had to play it again and just kept their original names.... made more sense! One thing I didn't appreciate is was the ending of Crisis Core. I won't spoil.... but it didn't happen like that in FF7. Kind of a big change.... but this was back when I actually played it on the PSP. I'm a Sony Pony for sure.... I guess now it doesn't matter. Won't spoil for those who haven't played or don't know.. but it was jarring for me. Even being young!
Spoilers he original ending to zack story was more tragic instead of the over dramatic and trying so hard to make players sad ending we got in CC PSP, still it worked it does makes you feel sad but the original is better and even more brutal.
I hate to say it, but me too. I have seen enough clips to know it's gonna break my immersion... so.. sorely I will be doing my first playthrough with Japanese audio, just so that I can focus on the good parts of the game. I do wanna do a playthrough with the new english cast, but I wanna enjoy myself first.
Yeah, Zack's the only recast I've had any issue with and it sucks that it seems like he hasn't really won many people over here. His original VA is one of the reasons he worked so well on the PSP, so this is a pretty big hit.
I've been waiting for this for years!!! I almost lost hope that they'd every bring Zack the puppy back with a remaster! I'm so happy. I'm hoping the new voice cast will do this game justice. I miss Rick Gomez
For those of you who hadn't picked up the game yet I'm letting you know right now Great game it's nearly a one to one in terms of what it was on the PSP The only minor petty gripe that I have is the changing of certain characters voice actors
I'm absolutely getting this game. Came into the series with FF7 Remake (which I regard very highly) and have finished the original FF7 & FF8 in the meantime. Really looking forward to getting Crisis Core
It’s terrible all the way through. As are the rest of them. Just watch the remake version of Angeal, genesis and sephiroth fight. Everyone is so extra and camp it’s unreal.
😁I already preorder my game, I looking forward to playing the game to relieve the story or Zack and get happy with all the references and to feel sad all over again
my only gripe is sadly Caleb pierce, va of zack its.....how do i put this politely, its sounds like sonic the hedgehog holding his nose or has a flu. Sephiroth is another who was pretty bad, but i guess one of the great things about the pc version is you can always mod in all of the voiced lines with rick gomez.
One thing the gameplay changes did was make the game significantly easier. Especially the Buster Sword stance completely breaks the game. As soon as you get it to 15% which doesnt take that long if you do some missions, you can break the damage limit, and during stance all your physical commands damage is increased.
I pre-ordered it as soon as I saw it was being remastered. I never played the original and knew it was a big part of the Final Fantasy VII story as a prequel. I still am yet to finish Final Fantasy VII Remake so I thought this is the perfect time to start it from scratch.
Already preordered and eagerly awaiting the 13th! Can’t wait to replay it. Went for the Switch version because I always enjoyed the mobility of the game and being able to play it and put it aside whenever I wanted to. Also, I honestly don’t mind Zack’s new VA. Sure, Rick Gomez will always have a special place in my heart given the original Crisis Core was my very first step in the world of FF7 (yes, before even the original FF7), but the way people are tearing Caleb apart is beyond ridiculous. The guy does a very good job overall despite a few hiccups here and there. A little bit of growing into the role and he’ll be fine.
@@Bandikitty oh, please. His only real slip up was in Remake. Since Intermission he sounds just fine. His voice is very natural. People are bitching for the sake of it. I like Rick Gomez as much as the next guy, but the shit Caleb is getting is completely disproportionate to his performance.
Loved this remaster. It's actually pretty great. I played crisis core on an emulator after I played the hell out of remake, and a lot of the time I was just kind of forcing myself through out of love for the universe, but remaster was an entirely different story. That said the lack of CGI update is a disappointment, but at the same time I just wonder what is going on behind doors. I said that because it feels like SE is deliberately choosing to stay away from CGI altogether. Perhaps because of the cost or because...??? I say this because it was the same for remake. There's a total of what 2 maybe 3 cgi scenes? And they stand out like a sore thumb when they do show up. Hell I remember thinking I much prefered if they did the whole Neo Midgar CGI scene in-model because by then their CGI counterparts just felt alien to me. I am absolutely ignorant to how all of this works, but I think they didn't change the CGI because it'd be a pain to render those scenes with in-game models(given the roots dating back to PSP-engine) and just flat out going for full cgi remakes would be too expensive? I dunno. It don't bother me much, but the cgi(good as it is even today) kindda does stand out. Anyways still loved this remaster. They went pretty hard on it. I was just expecting a very lazy upscale hd/textures bump lol
Loved the video, great work! CC on PSP was one of my all time favourite games and I'm having a blast with the Reunion. One of the things that strikes me is how ambitious the game was, with it's storytelling and real-time battle system. I don't know how you would go playing this without playing the original though
I'll be getting and I'm excited to play the improved combat. I didnt mind the original combat and this is a plus. you've made me more excited to play this installment. Tuesday can not come soon enough.
I have already pre ordered the game. Haven’t played it before but I love the FF7 story and really enjoyed playing the Remake. I’m hoping I’ll enjoy playing this one just as much.
My two cents: The game is very true to the original. The only gripe I have, which is a huge one, is the voice actor for Zack. This is just NOT the Zack we knew from years ago. His very voice changes everything we loved about the character. Not to discredit the voice actor, it just does not fit for this character at all... otherwise, still fun to play and remarkably smooth.
It was one of my first purchases I made on my own after graduating boot camp. I bought the Japanese version because I had to play it early. This is gonna be bittersweet.
As someone who just got a PS5 two weeks ago and finished this game and a new ff7 fan it helps me understand everything going on that a family told me about
Please don't preorder games, at least not digital versions. You can get it just as well once it comes out, and the practice of pre-orders in the industry contributes to making games worse for all players.
I got the game and I'm having a great time with it. I really like the structure. The combat is great, the materia system has always been great and still is here. The short side missions are awesome. It is a good game. For what it is and what it cost I think it's an excellent purchase. I even like the DMW system. I never played the original and I am fully emersed in this game. I don't really give a crap whether it's a remaster or remake. It's fun and addicting.
Great video as always. Will definitely be getting the game day one on Steam for the highest performance. Crisis Core Reunion honestly will probably be my game of the year. I loved the original that much!
For real I'm praying that the team who did this does Dissidia as well just give me back my George Newbern Sephiroth if you do Square the new guy is awful 😭😭😭
I'm unbelievably excited to play this game. It's been my favorite FF game for a very long time but I honestly can't stand the new Zack VO. It's so grating and doesn't feel like his heart is in it. It might just be inexperience in the medium but I will probably get it again on PC at a later date and wait for someone to mod in Zack's original VA.
Didn't get to play Crisis Core back in the day but as a person who was raised on mostly handheld JRPGS I have a different design philosophy regarding jrpgs that most people do not have because of that reason. Also I had handhelds because I family was poor so we bought the cheapest systems which means that I had a GameCube over a PS2 and the wo Baten Kaitos games on the GameCube and most handheld JRPGs did more with less. Those games took you from place to place to place. You didn't have enough time to get sick of an area and when you were allowed to go back to a previous place it was great. With the Baten Kaitos games Monolith Soft proved they didn't have to have games with half hour long cut scenes to tell a compelling story. Final Fantasy X is structured more like GameCube RPGs than PS2 rpgs.
Hey man. Just letting you know. I'm not gonna watch this review because I want it all to be fresh to me. So I'll come back to this when I have played a good bit of the game or beat it.
Never being able to play the original for lack of the PSP (which to me doesn't seem like a smart business move), I am SO excited I get to finally experience this story!
im very excited for this game, and i know the new guy is doing his best, but rick gomez is and forever will be zack's voice. Gonna play the game, and probably going to love it, but im also going to miss the original voice.
It says a lot that Xenoblade fans wouldn’t shut up about how their hd remaster was “suchhh an upgraaadde” meanwhile this remaster looks fucking incredible. A lot of the game looks on par with the remake. But NO one is talking about it. It’s crazy.
I've had the game preordered for a bit now. Its pre-loaded on my PS5 and I can't wait for tomorrow @ 9PM (PST) when it unlocks. I never was able to play the original Crisis Core and I'm a HUGE FF7 fan but I never owned a PS5 so this is a must-buy for me
I also know what to expect, and while I typically prefer games with a bit more depth, because this was such a huge part of the FF7 world I don't mind the shortcomings it might bring with it.
I am definitely getting this game, I’ve missed it and could think of no other games from my old PSP library I’ve wanted back more. Also, I’m looking forward to just controlling Zack. He’s my personal favorite characters from Final Fantasy 7 lore. Come hell or highwater I will return this gem of a game to my collection.
I'm so happy at this video for a number of reasons. One, the fact that you guys got a physical copy to play test this game makes it all that much more real, and soon. I've completely lost track of time so this is a very pleasant surprise. Two, the fact that you guys actually got an early copy is super awesome. Senpai has noticed us! Yay! Three, I was cautiously waiting for this game, but after that review I'm nothing but excited and hyped for it. Thanks for all you guys do!
I'm looking forward to EVERTHING! I absolutely loved the original PSP game! Now decades later, I'm glad to finally play it again! On the PS5! At first, I was scared if they were going to change the story in anyway. But they didn't! Thank God! I'm happy it's 100% faithful to the original game's story! I can't stress enough on how excited I am to play this when it's released! If there is ONE nit pick I have on this remake (so far), it is Zack's new VA. I miss the OG FFVII voice actors too, but I gave them a chance and I did grow to love them in FFVII remake. So, it's great to see them return. Again, back to Zack's new VA, not so much. After hearing his performance in the FFVII Remake and the trailers for Crisis Core Reunion, I haven't grown to like his new voice. I don't know, he just sounds so tired, fake, dry and flat. Rick Gomez was far better for the role. He really put A LOT of emote into Zack's character! And I can tell he was having fun playing the character. The game's not out yet, so I guess I just need to give his new VA a chance. But other than that little issue, yeah! I'm getting Crisis Core Reunion on Day one! CAN'T WAIT!!!
One of the few games I was more than happy to preorder. Though I've gone for the switch version as opposed to the ps5 release, but that's mainly cause I enjoy having my FF games on a portable console
I pre-ordered as soon as it became available. I'm looking forward to fighting Minerva again twice over. PS4 version In skipping all the story and focusing on gameplay, doing the side missions as they become available, and then for the PS5 version, going to wait to get the buster sword before I tackle the vr missions.
There is an option for Japanese voices, the original English cast are completely gone though and I doubt that's going to change with EVERYTHING now being voice acted.
Awesome review. I hope you do a comparison video on the different console releases. I bought the Switch version even though I have a PS5. I just have to play it portably even though it runs at 30 fps. I loved playing the original on my PSP and I will enjoy it again on the Switch.
For a game that isn't out yet, this is an extremely indepth review and I can appreciate having a way to determine if i want to get a game or not. Seeing as how the game looks like a cross between FF7R and Type-0 (Two games I hold dear for their gameplay) I may be inclined to get it just off of that.
I pre ordered it months ago. I'm playing it on hard first time around. I'm skipping normal. I have stopped before going to genesis home town to beat the crap out of every available mission. I'm on level 6 missions and I am level 22. Slow, but steady. I love the challenge. The game is what I wanted. All except one detail. I love the updated graphics, the additions and Freeplay of the battle system, and nostalgia. The only this I don't awful is Zacks voice. It's as bad as saying tee-dis in place of tye-dis for FFX main character. If square offered a dlc with Zacks original voice actor for $9.99. I'm there lol.
They could've put more effort into making the game more visually appealing, but I guess if they did that, Sony would have taken the game off of other platforms. Essentially, even Sony didn't think this game was worth paying to keep off of other platforms. That says something.
I pre-ordered it as soon as it was announced, I never had the PSP and am not super familiar with the story so I'm excited to try it out. Anything to hold me over till final fantasy 16
I heard of this game, but never played it as I didn’t have a psp, a because of this I didn’t know what it was all about till now. But I picked up my copy today and can’t wait to get stuck in
Looking forward to this a lot. I actually am a relatively new Final Fantasy fan and only played the original last year for the first time, thinking at the time how much it would benefit from a remake/remaster. I think I'm going the PC route at first, but will probably grab a Switch copy later down the line just to have that portable physical copy for my collection.
Missed out on this years ago and always wanted to play it, this and skies of arcadia is two games i wanted to play and hoped would get a remaster. I picked the ps5 of crisis core today but hadn’t got to play it yet.
Almost? I didn’t buy the game until I learned you can switch the voices to Japanese, plus it was on sale for $30. The Japanese cast does an awesome job, the minor characters surprised me the most with how well-delivered their lines are. Good stuff all around.
The question i want to ask is, why didn't SE give FF7R a "true remaster" as well? Originally we all thought that's what we were getting, and wanted? Glad if you're still excited for this reimagined sequel, but personally i think it's an awful take on the og story so far.
Hopefully once this whole project is done and everything is made they'll essentially asset flip a faithful FF VII Remake.......look I know it'll never happen let me dream 😅
I really wish people would learn the difference between a remaster and a remake. An example of a remaster would be FFX/X-2 with upscaled resolutions but nothing has been REMADE. Crisis Core Reunion is a remake. If you do a side by side-by-side comparison it's night and day. Every model/environment has been REMADE...until you get to a certain point. Hell, FF7R isn't a remake (I know, it's in the title, which is why I say everyone has been lied to) it's a sequel. All you have to do is look at the story.
I'm on chapter 3 on the steamdeck, I never got the chance to play the PSP version, loving every min of it, also the camera losing position doesn't happen if you're locked on, ime.
I played through all of the FF7 compilation in june this year, started with FF7 then CC and watched the rest on YT. Ofc I then played FF7 Remake (the reason I played the compilation in the first place). It really was a unique experience with so many good OSTs and moments in those games. I got CCFF7 through *other means* (only have a PC) so I don't think 6 months is enough of time to justify getting Reunion. I will probably watch it on YT or something. I didn't really enjoy the combat in CC so that might be why. Looking forward to Rebirth though!!
I'm very excited to play this game again. It's been years and it was one of very favorites. It's far from perfect, but it's near my heart. I'm not a fan of the new Zack voice, no offense to he actor, but to me it sounds like the old guy, but WAAY more nasily.
Loved crisis core was a game I had to borrow my friends psp and copy when I was like 14 since It wasn't mine I could never replay it or justify getting a system just for that so will look forward to this nostalgia
Dis you complete the game in hard mode? The last time I played it, I got hard stuck after obtaining the buster sword. All I could do was grind to raise my level. Were there any changes to the game balance?
As much as I've debated with myself on whether or not I should play CC, I'm not sure if I'm sold on the story or gameplay. I have a basic understanding of the story already from past reviews, so I might skip this one. Ty Final Fantasy Union for the review and I hope everyone enjoys the game!
Never played the OG but I've been having a lot of fun with this one. Combat actually feels really good once you get the hang of it (and I'm currently playing on mouse and keyboard, which took some getting used to). It is definitely still a PSP remaster though
I played Remake, stopped and bought this. The voicing and dialogue is a bit clunky and goofy, but I like the game so far. I want to play the FF VII games in order before Rebirth comes out. Good video, thank you.
Started playing this yesterday after finishing last main title game on my stream and oh boy. Thus far technical stuff has been made better, sure. But not all. I would have prefered some kind of recipe book for the freaking Materia Fusion. Yes I could just try everything out but it'd be more fun to go on a mission knowing what exactly I am aiming for. From narrative perspective I hope they don't f up mako reaktor-scene where Cloud "faces" Sephiroth. If trailer is accurate, they missed the point of Cloud's level of strength on that part of the story. Other than that, I hope I can enjoy game like original psp-version. I am a bit shamed to say I'm not as hyped as many people are due my previous experience with criris core and the lore it added to the original. But oh boy first psp playthrough was a wild ride. Wild enough to make my eyes wet a bit. Not for a specific reasons of course :D
I am late to the party. I bought the game after I finished Rebirth and needed a linear game as contrast to the 100 hour tour de force that rebirth was. It was great, even better than I rembered it.
As someone who never had a PSP, I'm actually most looking forward to the fact that it's coming directly to Steam. Square Enix has been treating PC releases as an afterthought, and even when they do, they've been tied up in Epic exclusivity recently. The fact that CC is launching on Steam alongside every other platform gives me hope that this policy is starting to change, and is enough for Square Enix to shut up and take my money.
