Even though we had a lovely time at the palace gardens and an amazingly tasty meal... one part did not go so well

If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make travel vlogs of all the exciting places I visit. I started travel vlogging about 8 years ago because I wanted to see more of the world and be able to watch back some of my adventures. I also make weekly comedy videos every Sunday on my main channel usually revolving around funny differences between British vs American things! Anyway, thanks for stopping by!

Evan, this video is delightful. So sorry for your food troubles. I love Heather’s soft spoken manner.

1:00 - Yeah, tough luck. Fanal is high enough to be above the clouds, so being cloudy in lower altitudes doesn't always mean it's also cloudy up there, usually it's the opposite. The time you spent in Madeira wasn't enough for you to be able to "read" the weather to know that but at least you tried. 🙂 12:15 - I don't think it was the fish (the Scabbard is usually fresh), I think it was the fried madeiran banana. The same thing happened to me when I first ate it, I threw up and I had diarrhoeia for several hours. I tried it again in another dish and I had the same reaction, so I never ate it again. Apparently, the fried banana is not very friendly to some people's stomachs, but it could've also been a conjugation of various things, including the Pineapple-Banana. I ate Scabbard fish many times during the 6 months I was in Madeira and never once I had any adverse reactions.

Mum and dad had a huge Monstera Delosia plant in the back yard and one time it fruited. OMG, the taste was amazing! This was in Adelaide, South Australia.

i got food poisoning abroad from the most innocuous food: a grilled cheese. that was the day i self diagnosed myself as lactose intolerant

Sorry that happened to you- a vacation is a shitty (pun intended lol) way to find out about your lactose intolerance. I do want to mention an intolerance to dairy isnt quite the same thing as food poisoning tho. Food poisoning occurs when certain bacteria are introduced to food (usually meat or fish) that has been cooked/stored improperly and quite literally poisons those who eat it for several days. So the blame falls on whoever was responsible for the preparation and/or storage of the food and not the consumer. Lactose intolerance on the other hand is more of a personal gut/dietary restriction issue. I have been lactose intolerant for 15 yrs & I've found it important to make the personal choice to avoid it, as that responsibility (and blame for any adverse reaction if I give in and eat it anyway) is mine alone to bear. Restaurants being transparent about what's in the food on the menu is helpful though, and I'm glad to see it becoming more the norm to have alternative options these days. 🙂

@@BlackCatBritt oh that's cool! (somewhat) i guess it was both cases. i actually ended up being lactose intolerant but it was most definitely food poisoning, though I hadn't known what caused food poisoning. thanks for sharing

Thanks for creating this easy-going viewing p!easure despite gut adversity. Fish and related aquatic foods are the main source of travel food poisoning, no question. But as you say, don't blame the fish!

Activated charcoal, 2 capsules every 4 hours for 12 hours helps. I'd do this every day for the next 5 days. Also, you want to find a functional doctor to get orthobiotics because those probiotics do not feed back bacteria. Plus, the functional doctor is better at dealing with food poisoning without you having extreme dire straights for the rest of your life like I had. I ended up with severe candida yeast overgrowth because of food born sickness too many times.

I don't believe it was the fish, if it were you would have been sick that night, at least that has been my experience. Did you not try a espetada in Madeira? Also... do you research the restaurants before eating?

Fairly certain it was. Heather had the smallest bite and also the smallest food poisoning in the morning whereas mine was more proportional
