I recently watched this on the Criterion Channel. Wow!! What a dark masterpiece. Definitely going to buy in the future. Great review Daisuke.

It's very sad that this film severely damaged Michael Powell's career because of the critical reception at the time. Michael Powell was a brilliant director and beautifully shot. Thank you Daisuke for the discussion. You're Awesome! 👍

Yes this film severely damaged his career unfairly, but over time it has gained many champions

I actually ordered this as I’m not going to be able to go to Barnes & Noble in person right now due to the fact I’m going to be fairly busy in July, but I’m looking forward on seeing the 4K version of Peeping Tom. Plus it’s been quite sometime that I’ve even seen it, so rewatching it will be great. Hope you’re doing well Daisuke, please have a great night and take care!

Same here. I’ve seen it and, in my opinion, it definitely lives up to it’s reputation; happy to have it in the collection.

I just watched this on Tubi and enjoyed it. It wasn't as graphic as I feared. More like a Alfred Hitchcock style. I don't know that I would rewatch it so glad I didn't buy it unless you are wanting the extras.

Daisuke-san, I know you are a very polite and respectful person so I am sure this is not intentional, however nowadays the term "prostitute" is considered derogatory in English. There are several alternative terms which are preferable such as sexworker or escort. Again this is a relatively recent development and certainly at the time of release of this film the p-word would still have been considered acceptable. Love your content, especially your in-depth reviews and monthly Criterion announcement reactions videos. Thanks for all the hard work you put into the community.

Very disturbing film. It came out the same year as Psycho (1960). That's mind blowing 😱.

Police officers to this day use that word.

Thank you. I don’t mean to offend so thank you for this comment. I understand that the term is one that is used in current statutes as well (as a term that is defined by laws, which to me is a reliable arbiter as to whether a word is appropriate or not). Of course I understand that usage of terms can change over time which is very understandable. But I don’t consider it a word in the way that you have mentioned and I think my usage it here is still within the bounds of acceptability in context. And my comments are made in the context of this film and not made in a way that is reflective of my own views of sex work as a personal or political or socially cultural topic. But all the same, if you are offended by it, please know that it is not at all intentional on my part. And I think you have a broader and more accepting perspective on language than I do so thank you for your comment which I know you made with the best of intentions. Thank you again and warmest regards.

What are you talking about it's not derogatory. This is what they are called same with hooker. These are common terms used daily. The only people who would be offended are in that line of work which in itself is illegal in most places.

What? Stop the presses! Is it no longer the oldest profession as well?
