Double Indemnity really is the epitome of a classic film noir. I always say to those while recommending it, if you like Body Heat, Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, or Gone Girl, then you'll definitely like Double Indemnity and Barbara Stanwyck's tour de force performance as the quintessential Femme Fatale. One of my all-time favorites. I'm so glad Criterion gave it the treatment it deserves.
I wanted Citizen Kane to be my intro into 4K viewing. However, the snafu with the initial release delayed me getting it. However, I was able to get The Red Shoes and I was absolutely blown away by the presentation.
I've never seen Double Indemnity and I decided to take a chance and buy Double Indemnity on a whim when they announced it for 4k. I didn't know it would become one of my favorite movies of all time!
Thank you Eliot. I am looking to pick up Blu-ray’s of The Spy who Came in from the Cold, Chimes of Midnight and Flight of the Phoenix. Your Noir picks were incredible. Detour and Kiss me Deadly were great.
There are so many 1080p Criterion BDs with relatively recent 4K scans that I'm tempted to buy---but already having 4K scans means that Criterion could announce them as upcoming UHD releases at any time. Such a dilemma!
Couldn’t agree more about The Last Waltz and with your recommendation of Dazed and Confused I think I’ll indulge in that 4k criterion because haven’t seen that one since vhs days…
I don't own any Criterions. I'm about to start collecting with this current sale. My problem is that I have to be really careful when choosing standard Criterion blu-rays. I can't afford to double dip. I'm going to pick movies I'm fairly certain won't be getting a Criterion 4K disc upgrade. From my understanding, the more popular blu-rays that are from a 4K digital restoration or digital master are likely to get a 4K Criterion disc at some point. Am I right? That's why I'm holding off on movies like Moonstruck, Parasite & Silence Of The Lambs. Also, there are some cases where I want the Criterion blu-ray, but the 4K is available from another company. I think you discussed this before. I hear that Criterion blu-ray discs can be better than another company's 4K disc. Fortunately, many of the Criterion movies I want aren't available on 4K and aren't likely to be.
I already own all of those films on DVD (one on Blu-ray and one by Criterion 4K), but only one by Criterion. I'll be buying all of them on 4K, except The Red Shoes which is the Criterion 4K I already own. Thanks for the update!
Thank you Elliot. I am new to viewing your content and am enjoying listening to you share thoughts on titles. I don't think I have noted what screen size you are viewing titles, or anything along that line. Would you mind sharing some thoughts on what type of equipment you use to view and listen to the films you share? Thank you for adding to the appreciation and enjoyment of films. Appreciate your time in sharing.
Made up for just picking up only a few in the sale last November. A treasure trove of films I bought: Romeo & Juliet (Blu), Malcolm X (4K), Infernal Affairs Trilogy (Blu), Cooley High (Blu), Miller's Crossing (Blu), Raging Bull (4K), The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen (4K), Once Upon A Time In China: The Complete Films (Blu), Targets (Blu), Incredible Shrinking Man (Blu), Zatoichi The Blind Swordsman (Blu/DVD), Devil in a Blue Dress (Blu), Hollywood Shuffle (Blu), Buck and the Preacher (Blu), WALL-E (4K), Double Indemnity (4k). Whew! And still need to get After Hours later this month.
Great recommendations! I’m excited to upgrade Rules of the Game and it’s uncompressed Monaurol sound since it is a Top 10 Criterion for me! Debating Thelma and Louise
Hi Elliot, I am very much interested in purchasing the 4K version of Dazed and Confused (one of my favourite films), but where can I purchase/order it in the UK?
Got the Marlon Riggs set, The Art Life, and I think I'm going to pick up Watermelon Woman later this month. And I'm getting Pan's Labyrinth for my partner! Thinking about one or two others, but I try to contain myself (and my budget) as best I can.
Hope it does. 4K Kubrick has gone quiet, Eyes Wide Shut already has a 4K master that was shown in 2019 and there has been no efforts to release it on disc. Mind you it might have been recalled since the last time EWS was shown in a re-release it was in 35mm
So far I bought The 3 colors trilogy 4K Mulholland Drive 4K Lost Highway 4K La haine Punch drunk love Great dictator The rest on my list: After hours 4K Being there Andrei rublev Triangle of sadness
How do you manage to take advantage of a Barnes & Noble sale? They refuse to ship outside the US, Same with Criterion Coll. themselves. In fact, being in Australia I've found it's near impossible to participate in many of these 50% off sales from various labels if you live outside the US... it still costs us between $50-$80 for most of these CC 4K titles...
I have family in the US who I can ship films to and they then send to me. I’m lucky in that sense but you could look at using a shipping forwarding service? Cheers
You got my hopes up there but then I tried to buy a couple of discs and UK isn't listed in the countries at checkout .. i guess you can mess around with a forwarder but thats a lot of hassle. Customers in Afghanistan are ok to order though (?!) ergh :(
@@SBBUK Yeah, tweeted B&N Customer Care and they stated they were "Sorry for any disappointment". Turns out they've excluded ALL of Europe not just the U.K. I wonder how Mr. Coen is getting them or does he not live in the U.K.?
I picked up After Hours After Life Drive My Car Infernal Affairs Trilogy Thief One Night In Miami In A Lonely Place To Sleep With Anger Ballad of Gregorio Cortez La Cage Aux Folles Manila in the Claws of Light Fantastic Planet My Dinner With Andre
Which Night of the Hunter are you looking at? The 4K of that film is a Kino Lorber release and won’t be 50% off. The Criterion blu-ray is $24.99 which is the 50% off price.
