During the Crisis of the Third Century, Rome was on the verge of collapse from internal and external threats. But just as the east seemed lost, a hero would rise to bull it back from the brink. Odaenathus, the Ras of Palmyra!

The only issue I have with this is that it does tend to play up the loyalty to the emperor angle. I think there's good reason to think his loyalty wasn't sincere and more just real politik.

Every once in a while Rome's patriotic and dutiful culture would create these insanely loyal guys who just wanted to defend Rome at all costs. Cincinnatus is another example of this.

His "loyalty" is a point of debate. What loyalty means to different people is what causes an issue. He was not loyal out of some personal virtue, he ruled the area as he saw fit with little influence from Rome. Had the Western part been more demanding, it's likely he would not have stayed loyal if it infringed on his view of how things should be won. This isn't like George Washington turning down the office of Monarch. This was a loyalty of convenience. Now that's not an attack on his character, it's just that the loyalty you're associating with him, in the same vein as Cincinnatus, isn't really the same. He deserves reward and praise for the show, sure, but I would call his loyalty more of a practice of knowing when enough is enough and pushing the bounds as far as possible without the terrible drawbacks. Fighting for independence against two great powers, as his wife would learn, was not exactly a smart move when you can have all that power anyways in everything but name.

"loyalty to the emperor" should be taken with a huge pinch of salt. Outside of recognizing centrally appointed provincial governors, there's no real indication that loyalty was his main concern. I suspect that his main concern was to avoid losing his new territory (where he largely ruled unopposed) to more conflicts from a pointless march on Rome. There was nothing in the west except for formal recognition and all the troubles that came with it. He played it smart and consolidated his gains, bent the knee while actually having more power than his emperor, and focused on the only threat to him-- the persians. In fact, he slowly started to style himself as a rival claimant to the legacy of the eastern rulers.
@Steve_Hickman
@Steve_Hickman 6 лет назад
Zenobia declaring an empire in the territory that Odaenathus saved, was her practically spitting on everything her husband stood for and accomplished.
@lujoja8226
@lujoja8226 5 лет назад
Except for if she believed that Odaenathus had been assasinated on the orders of the Romans; whom may have came to see Odaenathus as a threat for the power and influence over the eastern provinces that he wielded, despite his apparent loyalty. Its not outside the realms of possibility. Afterall, Rome was heavilly dependant on Egyptian grain, and the power of the Palmyrenes meant that they were poised to cut that supply line at their will and could hold the empire hostage, much like Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) did.
@therealjay5731
@therealjay5731 5 лет назад

Romans never deserved such a man, if he had risen up and rallied to the side of the Persians, a Palmyran empire may reign supreme in the east, stretching from the far lands of Egypt and the rich coast of Phoenicia.

Maybe expanded to North America Via Britannia, or explore the African Coast lines even. But beyond North Africa and the New World I do not see Rome expanding farther than that.

rabixado Alexander made ideas never seen before in his time, like in the battle of gaugamela, where he tricked the Persians into chasing him and revealing a gap in the enemy army, which he charged in a split second without hesitation. There might be generals who aspired to be like Alexander (Caesar, pompey, trajan, and hadrian) but few were actually as successful as he was. There are records that talk about the young Caesar staring at a statue of Alexander the great and saying "when Alexander was 30, he conquered the world, I'm 30 and have done nothing!"

With the new total war Britannia being unveiled it would be cool if you could go back and go into detail over that time period. Most know the vague outline of what happened through shows like vikings etc but a more historical accurate version of events would be interesting!

Why britannia after all?? When there is so much more interesting settings? Just another go at history revisionism like they did in Rome 2 and especially Attila where they pretended that our german women were a bunch of feminazi warriors and that we had armies of female warriors and them battling Equal to our men between us. History revisionist typical 2017 neoliberal bullshit to push sociopolitical agendas and lies instead of teaching real history. Probably we will see armies of Welsh women fighting a black Anglogermanic lesbian Queen and her armies of multiethnic muslim Germanics and Scandinavians or crap they keep coming up with to please their Marxist overlords that are infesting all forms of Media. For me as a half german half brit and history lover I am not excited

Indeed, also I hate to nitpick but I saw a little error with the map, It seems the province Dacia (north of the Danube) is not occupied by the Romans. It was actually abandoned a few decades after this under Emperor Aurelian. Though it's not that relevant for this particular eastern empire story, if you are going to do a documentary on Aurelian next you should probably make sure Dacia is included.
@InvictaHistory

thanks for pointing that out, should have indeed included it at that point in time

This expansion has everyone on this topic. I'll be honest I never heard of Odaenathus, even though I'd learned about the short-lived Palmyran Empire.

This man reminds me to Belisarius. Great generals, unknows for the most of the people, saviours of the roman power which maybe did not deserve such great men.
