Critics are accusing the British publisher of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s books of censorship after it removed colorful language from works such as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Matilda” to make them more acceptable to modern readers. A review of new editions of Dahl’s books now available in bookstores shows that some passages relating to weight, mental health, gender and race were altered.

A person’s words should never be changed. If so, they are no longer the author’s and the name of the author should be removed.

What I actually find the most insulting is the changing of womens' occupations. I come from a working class family. My mother may not have gone to college but she was more financially astute and had every day life skills many "educated" people seem to lack. My grandmother was not afforded education due to the generational differences but she too did well for herself. This erasure of every day people who do customer service, admin work, that being perceived as "lowly" and menial reeks of classism and snobbery. I appreciate anyone who does their job well, whether they are a cleaner, a cashier, a teacher or a scientist. These sensitivity readers reek of so little life experience it borders on embarrassing.

I haven't read the book, but won't the witches try to pass as an average person & interact more with the average person than saying a scientist that's usually surrounded by other professionals that are older.

Every book is a reflection of it's time and zeitgeist. What they are doing with the books by Roald Dahl is absurd. They are removing details, explanations and characteristics that are ment to create images in the reader's mind, as literature should. Remove this, and eventually one is left with very little, or at least something may differ very much from the original content or intended "message". Regarding droit moral, In continental Europe, moral rights are inalienable and cannot be transferred or waived. However, when the originator is dead, the heirs and the publisher are the rightholders. They have full right, and may edit the works or grant others permission to do so.

If you like modern culture then read modern books. If you like old culture then read old books. Books are a reflection of the time when they were written. I don't see the point in erasing history?

I have been on life saving medications that caused me to gain 40 lbs, which I lost when I stopped the meds. I was fat at that time. But your rude response assumes someone is willfully being unhealthy is incorrect. Don't be so quick to judge!

See the problem? You people are giving the system to individuals who are somewhat pure, so by avoiding your responsibility and taking the easy way out, you're losing in the new system and based off the moderation, the new rules are modelled after these current trends.
