What a beautiful video. Your voice is so soothing and your colors are beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous work! You explain things very well. I am a teacher, so I always appreciate someone who can give clear directions. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Love this! Thanks so much for teaching this. I’m going to repair an old colonial rug with this same instruction. Happy to have a way of keeping my Mom’s rug.

Hey you might already know this now since it’s been 2 months, but you can make your own t shirt yarn (: just google how to make t shirt yarn and your options to learn are plentiful lol
Thank you so much for this clearly explained and demonstrated video❤ I can’t wait to get started on making my own crochet rug and Upcycle some old clothes I don’t wear
You need to select the type of cotton yarn that does. Like mercerized or I would at times use the type that is meant for warp in woven rugs, it is super durable. The soft cottons people use for things like dishcloths is not ideal for this.
Thank you so much for Your tips! It was so so useful. Want to make colourful carpet for doughters and couldn't get why i can't get it round and keep it that way?
You can either buy ready-made T-shirt yarn like this amzn.to/3dPyK1z (affiliate link) or cut up any stretchy clothes to make some. I normally cut mine about 3 cm wide. When you end the rug it is good to cut the last bit of the T-shirt yarn to taper in towards the end, just like how show when you change the yarn colour. Then you just fasten off the yarn when you come to the end.
You can use any thick and chunky yarn. I have t-shirt yarn there, it is sold with that name, or you can simply cut up old t-shirts into strips of 2-3 cm in width. It is also called Zpagetti yarn. The other yarn, the thinner one to crochet with is mercerized crochet cotton, weight about 125 metres per 50 gram. But for both yarn you can use many different types, the result then varies depending on what you use.
Yes, in two different ways. You could make the base like this and make the sides by stopping the increases. Or you could make a rounded basket by increasing less all the time, allowing the shape to get rounded like a bowl.
Excellent video and directions! No one ever ever ever mentioned to hold the hook down toward the center to keep the stitches flat! I have crocheted for nearly 25 years and have never heard that before. I wish I had heard that way back in the beginning.
Hi Tuula, like many below, I've crocheted all my life & never heard the awesome tips you share. What a revelation. Have already recommended your videos to my who fb neighborhood! One question, tho: How wide are your t-shirt yarn "strips", please. I've put out a call for t-shirts anyone wants to get rid of & just picked up my first few! Yay! I'm ready to cut out my own yarn, but very uncomfortable, not knowing how wide to cut. Thanks so much for your genius hacks & any advice you might have for me.
Hello Mona, so glad that you have found good tips on my channel! The width of the strips depends a bit on what you want the final product to be. But for an average thickness of a rug I have cut them around 2 cm (or just under 2 in). The important thing is that all strips for one project are about the same thickness. So if one t-shirt you cut up is thicker material, then it should be cut slightly narrower.
This is the best tutorial I've seen! you showed all the tricks that nobody explained. Thank you so much for sharing your experience in such a clear way
Yes, you can make a basket. There are several ways. Either you could make a round basket with straight sides by stopping increases when the base is big enough. Or you could increase less all along and get a bowl-like rounded basket.
The best way to finish is to cut the last 15 cm or so of the t-shirt yarn so that it is tapered, gets narrower little by little. Then crochet this same way, tghtening the stitches as the t-shirt yarn get smaller. When you get to the end of it, make one chainstitch wih the finer yarn and cut it.
No, I haven't shown that anywhere. The cutting can be done in so many ways, also depending on what types of seams the T-shirts have that you are using. If there are thick seems they need to be cut off. Otherwise cutting either in the round or back and forth, keeping the same width. Cut continuously, as long strips as possible.
Qué bello esto de tejer envolviendo las tiras,c crochet !! Estoy encantada. Sé hacer de todo: tgo talleres gratuitos. Gracias!!! Dsd Sta María de Punilla, Córdoba, Rep Argentina.
It needs to have the increases often enough but not too often. Unfortunately it's not possible to give exact numbers of stitches because they depend so much on how thick each of your yarns is. In the second part of the video I explain quite a bit about how to get the right number of stitches. Hope it will work out for you!
If you wanted a basket, you would stop increasing after you had a piece that is large enough for the base of the basket. That would be a basket with straight sides. If you wanted a rounded basket you would need to pull the t-shirt yarn a bit tighter all the time.
There is no hard and fast rule, you just need to make sure you put the next stitch in such a way that the hook always points directly towards the centre, so it doesn't get slanted. If you don't put two when you need to, the work starts to curl into a cup shape, doesn't stay flat. When you just try, you get used to seeing the right amount quite soon. Good luck!
Hei that was great ! I think that could be the technique I'd could use for the rug I want to make. I was going to ask if I could make different shape but you ending next video already answer that. I'll check that one out when L'm ready to make it. Thanks for the tips 👍
Thank you! Yes, the same technique works in different ways. Maybe I'll try next how I would manage to make a square like this, crocheting round, not back and forth!
Thank you so much. I loved your instrutions. Very well explained. And very useful tips. Since a couple of years I have thought about doing some rugs with my old t-shirts. Now I am excited to start it! Greetings from Brazil.
Thank you. I really like this and how the cotton yarn color combinations can make such nice color effects. I've got a bunch of tee shirt yarn and this is perfect!!! 🌈
Wonderful tutorial. I have been madly keeping old t shirts. Do you have a tutorial to show how to make this as a rectangular rug? Thank you for making such and easy to follow tutorial.
The easiest way to change the t-shirt yarn colour is to tape both the old colour and the new colour yarn and set them on top of each other so that you crochet over both for about 6-10 cm length. To chabge the finer yarn colour that you crochet with, you can either just leave one and start the next and weaver them in afterwards or also use this twisting method ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RdZrJtn7Hdg.html
I haven't shown the finishing on videos but the best way is to cut the t-shirt yarn so it tapers in towards the end and tighten your last few stitches. Hope this helps!
