Learn to crochet a straight seam with HDC (half double crochet). But it also explains why this half stitch creates problems and single, double and treble crochet don't!

Interesting! Hadn’t thought of a slip stitch through back stitch only before. Thanks. I’ll be looking for more of your tutorials.

Thank you, Nicki. I have been crocheting a doll pattern’s pant leg for two hours now, crochet in, rip out! HDC and the join was at the middle of the leg when I began and at the end of 33 rows, it was on the opposite side of the leg. So frustrating! But, your explanation was so simple. I’ve been crocheting for almost 70 years and never knew this technique for the HDC join in the round. What I can’t understand is why the first pant leg’s seam is straight. Thank you for all your wonderful videos, I’ve learned so much from you.

Thank you for explaining why there is the issue to start with. This will help me with a hat pattern I’m struggling with

Thank you for this video tutorial. It has helped me a lot. I did my first hat today and I thought that I had miscounted and that was why I had the slant, but I was wrong. My "Aha" moment was when you revealed that this slant happens naturally as part of the Half Double Crochet Stitch in the round when making a hat with this stitch. I have seen another video which is meant to help with this. So I will keep both these videos in mind. Thank you once again and I will have a look at your written instructions as well.

Great info and tutorial. I don’t join HDC because I can’t stand that seam. With HDC hats I use a stitch marker and do no-join continuous work. I like it much better

Thank you, thank you!! Oh, and besides learning about the straight hdc seam, this video also showed me the 'hidden' sl st, so again Thank you!

Thank you so much, I could not stand this trouble. I never realized it was actually the stitch. Sigh.

Thank you for explaining how and why the seam was going wonky in my hdc beanie. Tried the decrease and increase method and it worked. I prefer hdc over dc when making hats but had given up because the slanted seam drove me nuts. Now I know why!!! Thanks again...now back to hooking.

Thank you for sharing this technique. As you said the slant does affect the pattern when making purses also. And we can't hide it at the edges or the sides. This technique will definitely avoid the shift and enhance the beauty of the end product.

I thought learning the hdc as my second stitch would be a good idea but after the anatomy lesson I think I bit off more than I can chew 😂 Amazing lesson though, literally no other video, bold, or article i've picked through actually discussed this issue with the stitch. Thank you! gonna take another crack at this hat, hopefully it fixes at least one of my problems.

Never clicked that the sc/hdc stitches didn’t sit on top of each other hence the slant 🤔. Thank you!

I'm going to attempt this seem to be the most rational way I've seen so for. I want to make beautiful garments and the crocked seam isn't appealing to me. Thank you

now my seam is floating to the left :') do I have to make sure I'm not chaining at all at the beginning of each row?

I love the seamless look, but my pattern says to work 2 hdc into each dc from the previous round. Does that mean I will do 4 hdc at the end?
