I'm a grown man who just started to learn to crochet so I could do it with my daughter and I was SOOOO discouraged because all my square work turns into a triangle! Thank you for this help!
Shamgar331 THIS! this is so sweet. I would love to see some of your dual work! RU-vid has sure helped me learn new techniques that my Auntie who has been crocheting for 40 years taught me to do! Keep going, I am sure she gets a kick out of your willingness to learn.
Shamgar 331 LOL. My very first crochet project was a blanket for my newborn son. It turned out a triangle! 😫My son is now 40 years old and I discovered he still has that blanket! I’ve come a long ways since then😁 I am now crocheting a very pretty blanket for my granddaughter who is due in April.
71years old and I"ve sewn since I was nine years old and decided to learn crochet. Just as I was about to give up a year of frustration, I found your video. No more ripping out stitches. Thank you so much!!
I love this! I just started crocheting and it really bothered me that the edges were not straight. This is exactly what I wanted my edges to look like.
pacarnya sebong bro shut up i’m fifteen but you don’t see me putting down kids. i started crocheting at 9 too and you guys will be very glad that you started so young in a few years! keep going and don’t listen to pacarnys spaghetti or whateva
YES! Thank you!!! I'm so tired of following the pattern exactly and winding up with edges that aren't perfectly straight. I make really even, consistent stitches and couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting straight sides.
Enjoyed, loved! You have saved me from many hours of trying to keep the sides straight. I am so happy I opened my computer today. Thank you Thank you!!!
this is awesome. helped me out so much. i’m a somewhat new learner and making dish rags to get better and my sides are all wonky! it drives me crazy because i think i’m not doing something right and my count is almost always off by a few stitches. thank you for the great tips!
At last I will be able to create a straight edge without having to find the top of the stitch from the turning chain. With some sight issues this is a nightmare. Your method is so easy and it works. Thank you for making this video it has made a huge difference.
THSI helped so much! I’m making a blanket for my bunny well I was, but I’ll restart and use your method, because when I did it before, it turned into a triangle, and I felt like I wasted my time! But thank you so much! This will help definitely!
Hello Deidre, how are you ?? I hope you're good and safe. Honestly I must commend you've got an amazing smile.. I'm amazed with the way you put those smile on your beautiful face .. please keep smiling because life is beautiful and your smile too… How are you coping through this pandemic?? 😃 😷🌹
Ugh! I created a very unique crop top (it was a failed turtle neck) because i was skipping the first chain and not working the foundation chain. I just tried this on two rows and it looks soooo much better
Does this work for single, half double crochet abd double crochet? I love this I was messing up on the V end I’ll try this trick. I’m a beginner I’ve been so frustrated trying to figure out how to get straight edges. So happy you posted this to make us feel like we’re not going crazy. Was making a baby blanket out of the Bernet Blanket Yarn I gave up !!! The ends were so bad it was so frustrating. On U-tube it looked so easy. Praying this works for me as a beginner. Now I need to get my tension down. Love your tutorials. Love the two toned hat !!!!! Gosh it’s brilliant can that be made in a child’s size 5 to 7 year olds. Thanks ❤😂🎉
Personally, my favorite method is chainless turning (e.g. stacked dc), b/c I work a lot in hdc and dc (us terms) and I don’t like how the chain stitches don’t look like a stitch. It also helps me avoid confusion- there aren’t any turning chains to mistake for a stitch. There’s times where it matters less for me (like working in the round) but I like it for straightforward projects like scarves or dishcloths or something.
This is fine for doing double crochet (I think you called them single?? crochet) stitches, this is how we were taught [largely self taught in fairness] to do the rows when we were all busy crocheting ponchos in the 1970s. But how does this work when you do rows of trebles and can't easily go straight into the first stitch without the 3 turning chain?
I remember those 1970s ponchos, my mother made me at least one. I use the same method (new row start in the first stitch) for the treble crochet except I crochet two to keep the sides from binding. I crochet one for a single, half-double, and double crochet and then start my new row in the first stitch.
Hello! Thamk you for that video ! Do you think this technic would be ok also for un rug using jeans yarn. I want to use regular yarn around jean yarn but my first attempt took the shape of a rainbow and i'm willing to make it all over again but i need to know that next time will be the right one because it's a quite ambitious project ( rug of 1×2meters) for my kids (to be - i m pregnant with twins :) ) 's room ...
Don't skip the first when followed by anything smaller then a dc. Traditional turning would have you skip the first stitch for anything dc and larger, counting the turning chain as the dust stitch of the row. However, it's not even. If you stitch into the bar of the first sc made after a single turning chain, then you can grow the stitch to the desired height, e.g hdc, dc, tc. Then continue normally.
I started crocheting recently and my bookmarks I've tried to make twice are horribly uneven? On one side it looks like I've done four rows (I have) and on one side it looks like I've done two or three. Not that my project seems to shrink, when I had two rows it was approximately a foot long, and now on my fourth row it shrunk to maybe five inches when it's not curled together. What am I doing wrong/Are there any tricks I can use?
So, if I need my finished piece to be 20 stitches wide, how many chains do I make to start it? 20, 21,22, or 23? (The piece is going to be an Afghan made of all half double crochet stitches)
I keep seeing this title so I had to figure out why people didn't have straight edges as I have not had this issue, this is how I crochet too I taught myself
What if I want to dc on next row, can I chain 1, turn, sc in first stitch then dc the row except the last stitch which would be a sc? Previous row was a sc row.
That's how you do your 2nd row as far as I know, never heard of (in row 2) to chain 1 and skip 1st stitch.... Thanks anyways, maybe there are people who do it the other way they will find it helpful.
I've been crocheting a little over 40 years and never knew why my rows were always a bit off. I learned to skip that first stitch, now it makes complete sense. Thank you!

Yeah my tension is VERY inconsistent so some of my squares are stitched very tight and some are a little looser. It makes my projects so wonky and harder to sew together. I’ve only been crocheting for a few months so I’m going to hope that it’s something that I will gradually get better at with time!!
Have you any idea how refreshing this video is! “Crochet into this stitch and that = this how you do it! Straight edges. Job done! You’re welcome!” *straight* to the point, no waffling. Job done! Thank you so much! Xxx
If you were working double crochet in which the 3-chain turning chain "counts as a stitch" (according to your pattern), you WOULD skip that first stitch at the base of the chain, as it is considered the base of the chain/stitch.
This is for the young lady with crochetting straight lines. There arent enough thank you. I have tried for 10yrs. To do straight lines and thanks to you now I can. Bless you sweetie
TO ME THIS GOLD! I have been so confused about how to turn to crochet even edges after watching so many videos that showed different methods. I learned nearly 50 years ago to skip 1st sc & work into the 2nd leaving the unsightly gap. I've been trying to get back into crochet and didn't realize there are so many different ways to turn! I think I'll keep it simple from now on and use this way. Seems like I always make things harder on myself than they really are. Thank you for a wonderful basic, easy-to-understand video!
You only stitch into the 2nd stitch with double crochet to allow for the height of the turning chain (which is a stitch in most patterns). What she's showing has always been the way to do it with SINGLE crochet.
Perfect!!! Can't thank you enough for this tutorial. I finally got it!! Boy, those edges aren't easy but you totally showed me what I was doing wrong! Thank you, Sewrella! :)
I stumbled upon that method in my own as every other time I tried different directions the sides went off at an angle. Glad to see someone explaining this method.

This is perfect. I'm used to making hats for babies in a nearby NICU, but recently started also making 7"x 9" rectangles for Warmup America blankets and this technique has finally given me nice, even straight edges without mysterious "growth"! And I am using it with double crochet with 2 turning chains. Thank you so much!
