Please see pinned comment for size adjustment suggestions.
Thanks for watching!
If you have any questions please leave them below and I will get back to you.
What I used:
- 220 grams of medium weight yarn (10 ply / aran weight) about 350 meters
- 6mm crochet hook
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
- Buttons (If you don't have buttons check out this tutorial for yarn buttons - • How to Crochet Easy Bu... )
I made this crochet vest in a size small but it is easy to adjust for other sizes.
I would recommend measuring up against a tank or top you like the fit of.

I made this vest in a size small and it stretchy so it's forgiving for size. If you would like to make it in a different size, here are my row count suggestions: XS - front panels each with 19 rows, back panel with 41 rows S - front panels each with 22 rows, back panel with 47 rows M - front panels each with 25 rows, back panel with 53 rows L - front panels each with 28 rows, back panel with 59 rows XL - front panels each with 31 rows, back panel with 65 rows 2XL - front panels each with 34 rows, back panel with 71 rows 3XL - front panels each with 37 rows, back panel with 77 rows Basically, for each size up or down you’d like to make, you just need to add 3 rows to each of the front panels and add 6 rows to the back panel. This will slightly effect the number of rows in each section but as long as you are always doing the increase on the next available half double crochet row it should be fine. As for where to add/remove the extra rows, it really depends on how big you would like your arm holes. you could split the added rows between the increase portion under the arm, the shoulder chunk and decreases in the front (or the flat section at the back depending on the panel) but it will depend a bit on how big you want the arm holes. For the ribbing, Take 10 row for XS, add 10 for M, add 20 for L, add 30 for XL, add 40 for 2XL, add 50 for 3XL, etc Last thing! For the length, I think that depends more on your body shape than size so if you have a short torso like me you should be fine for length but if you have a long torso maybe add some chains at the start (row 1). For reference, mine is 16.5 inches/42cm from the shoulder to the top of the ribbing. I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any questions :)

Does the XS fit a 6 yrs old child?
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 8 месяцев назад
@@FatimaHDaham hi! It really depends on the size of the 6 year old girl. I think for most 6 year olds it would be too big but kids vary in size. Is she similar to adult size XS normally? I’ve linked the sizing guide I used in the description so you can use those measurements to check.

thank you for the tutorial! it’s very detailed and it was very easy to follow. i made my own vest, but it took me two tries because the first one was too small for me. i wear size S as well, but I used a different type of yarn and a different hook. that’s why it turned out too small for me 😅 but it was pretty easy to adjust this vest the second time when i was making it. so i got myself a very pretty vest just in time for the new year’s eve! thank you!!! ❤️

@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 2 года назад
Thanks you so much!! That’s great! This one is my personnel favourites - I wear it all the time! As for making it a larger size I can’t think of any requirements that would change the pattern. I measured mine against a top I have that I like the fit of when I was working out the size so that’s probably I good idea to do. And because the stitches are stretchy it will adjust to size a bit. The only thing you might consider is adding an extra couple of rows to the underarm portion - before you start increasing - but that really depends on the fit you want/the breadth of your shoulders. Otherwise you should be find just adding rows to the straight section that makes up the majority of the back panel. Please let me know if any of that doesn’t make sense! And let me know if you have any more questions :)

@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 6 месяцев назад
Hi! so sorry for the delay. For the chains for the XL it will depend a little on how long you want it to be. You can add any length below the armpit section (so to the foundation chain) without affecting the pattern. If you were just wanting to scale it up a bit I would add about 5 chains under the arm for the foundation chain and about 5 chains to the chain that comes after the increases and go up to where the shoulder would be. If you wanted it to be less cropped though you can add more - maybe 10 or so chains to the foundation chain. My underarm section is about 18 cm - the chain would be about 20 cm and my section going from the armpit to the shoulder is 18.5cm with the chain being about 20cm again so if you were to add 5 stitches that would be adding 4cm. so your foundation chain would be about 24 cm if you added 5 chains, etc. Hopefully this helps!!

Hi Stephanie I would love to make it, but with no buttons closed in the front. Any hints? Thankyou.
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 7 месяцев назад
Hi! I have a couple of ideas 😊 the first would be to make the front panels as they are but add a couple of extra rows in what would be the middle - about 2 cm on each panel - to account for the section with buttons so it’s not pulled too tight. Then you could add the neckline ribbing, I have another video with a v neck sweater vest so you could add the ribbing from that instead. The other thought was to use the v neck sweater video pattern instead but substituted the slip stitches I used with the stitch pattern from this vest. If you use the cm/inch measurement instead of the stitch and rows counts that might work 😊
@adreadarling
@adreadarling 8 месяцев назад
So ive just about finished but the armholes feel too tight (making an xl). How would you suggest going in and adding a few rows between thhe front and back panels? Maybe just a rib stitch?
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 8 месяцев назад
Hi! Yes I think that would work 😊 I'm not sure if it's easier to make a separate little panel for under the arm and attach it on or join on to one of the panels and stitch from there but I think either would work 😊 you could also make the ribbing around the armhole a little thinner too if you need. Depending on where you're up to you could also add a couple of stitches/rows to the top of the shoulder. Hopefully this helps but let me know if you have any more questions 🥰🥰

Hey, thanks for this pattern, I’m stuck making the left panel, starting off I am not getting the slight scalloped edge at the bottom as I progress between the bl hdc and bss rows - when I get to the end of the bl hdc row and turn, it gradually gets shorter each time :( Not sure what I’m doing wrong, any advice? x
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 6 месяцев назад
Oh that’s strange! Do you know if the panel is actually getting shorter with less stitches? Or just going a bit diagonal? Depending on your tension the bl hdc with the bl slip stitches can warp a bit and you may have to block it. But if it’s actually losing stitches it might be that the last bl slip stitch is really hard to see so maybe you missed a couple when doing the bl hdc? I know I’ve had that problem before!!

hello! thank you for sharing this pattern, i love how yours turned out :) i'm trying to do the v neck part but it seems like the v shape is not as low as yours even though i followed the same number of decreases. very new to crocheting, i'm using 8ply milk cotton - does this affect the sizing? everything else seems ok, just the v part. i'm afraid if i continue more rows, the front panel will become too wide. any advice? :)
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi Год назад
Thanks so much! I'm glad you like it! and no worries - the depth of the V is actually determined by where you put the buttons. It's probably hard to see because it's a dark colour but if you have a look at the thumb nail or start of the video, I stop decreasing around where my second necklace is and I've put my button much lower near my chest. The trim that goes around the neck will even out the v so you don't need to do the decreases all the way to where you want the v to stop. Does that make sense? the yarn may also affect it a bit but if you are using a similar sized hook it might not be too much! I can measure my vest in cm/inches if that helps? 😊
@divadinara2934
@divadinara2934 2 года назад
Hi! I wonder if i use milk cotton yarn 5 ply do i have to do same chains count in the video or do different chains count?
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 2 года назад
Hi! I think you will need to do a different stitch/row count to the video as I used 10ply yarn which is a bit thicker. I measured my vest in case that helps. The first chain under the arm pit is 19cm or 7 3/4” and then the chain going up the shoulder is 20cm or 8”. The width of the front panels is 17cm or 7” and the width of the back panel is 42cm or 17”. I had a look at the normal tension for 5 ply and 10ply yarn and it looks like if you multiple my stitch count by 1.5 is should approximately right but would be helpful to measure it. So my first chain under the arm is 26 chains but multiplied by 1.5 is 39 - so maybe that will work if it measures around 19cm or 7 3/4”. If you want it to be more accurate the tension on the yarn I used is 17 stitches by 23 rows for a 10cm square - your yarn ball hopefully lists your tension. If any of this doesn’t make sense please let me know and I’ll see if I can explain it a different way or provide more measurements! :)

My waist size in half is 7,5 inch wich means i will go with less foundation chain is it right? I'm not really sure i'll use 5ply, i still looking for another option for yarn size maybe i'll use DK yarn if it's possible:D
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 2 года назад
@@divadinara2934 no problem :) That sounds perfect if you want it more cropped! You could also add a trim around the bottom later if you want it to be longer anyway! The foundation chain will be the length of the measurement you want from under your arm pit to your waist - so 7 inches if you wanted it cropped. The width of half your waist will be for how many rows you do as you'd work from the underarm portion vertically across your body to the middle (or too the other side for the back). so you'd basically keep doing rows until you get to 7.5 inches using your measurements. Hopefully that makes sense and is what you're asking! In a nutshell, the length of you top is determined by the number of chains/stitches and the width around your body is determined by the number of rows. Let me know if that doesn't make sense - if you have Instagram I can try to send a diagram or something instead! Also DK will definitely be closer in stitch count and row count to what I made, i think it's only a little thinner than 10ply/medium weight but you might still need to add a couple extra stitches/rows but it shouldn't be too different!

If you haven’t already made the vest you can just double your 5ply yarn. That should be just right.
@abagaylem9424

how do you adjust it to make it bigger
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 2 года назад
For different sizes here are my row count suggestions: XS - front panels each with 19 rows, back panel with 41 rows S - front panels each with 22 rows, back panel with 47 rows M - front panels each with 25 rows, back panel with 53 rows L - front panels each with 28 rows, back panel with 59 rows XL - front panels each with 31 rows, back panel with 65 rows 2XL - front panels each with 34 rows, back panel with 71 rows 3XL - front panels each with 37 rows, back panel with 77 rows Basically, for each size up or down you’d like to make, you just need to add 3 rows to each of the front panels and add 6 rows to the back panel. I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any questions :)

do you think it's possible to follow this pattern without cutting the yarn and stitching the panels together? I've been trying to make this vest but the back panel always looks weird
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi Год назад
Hi Bruna 😊 I might be interpreting your question wrong but are you saying you’d keep going at the end of the back panel straight into one of the front panels? If so then I think that would work! You probably have to attach one of the front panels separately if you’ve already started the back panel but I think you could join them together without stopping. Sorry if that’s not what you meant though!

An i counting 23 rows on your first panel? Is that just a change you made for your fit?
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 2 года назад
Hi Asia! Yep I have 23 rows for my front panels if you are counting the foundation chain, 22 if not counting the foundation chain. And yes I made this to fit myself but I would normally wear a US size small (or Australian 8). Let me know if that’s not what you meant though. I’m happy to measure the panels in cm/inches if that would help at all!

@StephanieTashi 2 года назад
Thanks so much! I think it would work! If you use a different ply yarn to what I used (10ply/medium weight) you’ll probably need to use less chains and rows but if you measure it to a singlet you already have I think it should work! Especially because the vest is button up it’s easier to fit as it doesn’t need to go over your head or shoulders. If you were planning to make the same size as mine let me know and I can send you the cm/inch measures my vest ended up being 😊🥰

I don't get the "block off" a chain thing??
@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi 2 года назад
Hi Pixie! Sorry it’s confusing! By block off I just mean that you don’t stitch into that chain. So it’s not counted as a stitch and it’s just used purely to turn around. Does that make sense? Let me know if not :)

@StephanieTashi
@StephanieTashi Год назад
Hi Shannon! Sorry that it's confusing! I think the burgundy/maroon also makes it harder to see. I've tried to type out the that section as a written pattern in case that helps you. I also use the same pattern for some of my other vests just with single crochets instead of slip stitches. If you want to check that out my most recent tutorial (the grey v neck vest) and the 70s inspired striped vest have the underarm increases and decreases. If you like the single crochets better, I think you could also do that for this vest - or hopefully I've explained it better so it makes more sense :) Here is the pattern - but in summary terms, starting with a row with 1 stitch, I am doing one increase in each row until I get to 5 stitches in the row, and at the other end doing one decrease in each row until I only have 1 stitch left: Row 1: Chain 2, slip stitch (sl st) into the second chain from the hook, chain 1 and turn (1) Row 2: put 2 backloop sl st’s into the stitch from the previous row, chain 1 and turn (2) Row 3: put 2 backloop sl st’s into the first stitch, and 1 backlog sl st into the next stitch, chain 1 and turn (3) Row 4: 1 backloop sl st into the first 2 stitches, 2x backloop sl st’s into the last st in the row, chain 1 and turn (4) Row 5: 2x backloop sl st’s into the first st of the row, 1 back loop sl st into the next 3 stitches, chain 1 and turn (5) Rows 6 - 60: 1 backloop sl st into each stitch of the previous row, chain 1 and turn (5) Row 61: 1 back loop sl st into the first 3 stitches, backloop sl st decrease into the last 2 stitches of the row, chain 1 and turn (4) Row 62: backloop sl st decrease into the first 2 stitches of the row, 1 back loop sl st into the next 2 stitches, chain 1 and turn (3) Row 63: 1 back loop sl st into the first 1 stitch, backloop sl st decrease into the last 2 stitches of the row, chain 1 and turn (2) Row 64: backloop sl st decrease into both stitches of the row, chain 1 and turn (1) Row 65: chain 1 and pull tail Please let me know if you have any questions :)
