Hi, so I have some difficulty counting the rows - the pattern become like knitted rib, so does every rib count as one or two rows? Really difficult for me to figure out with slipstiching 🙈😅

Ah yes the slip stitch ribs are hard to count! But every rib counts as 2 rows 😊 so each raised part of the rib is one row and each gap of the rib is another row. I normally find it easiest to count by 2’s, either count all the raised or all the gaps Hopefully this helps!! 🥰

Thank you for the tutorial. I really love the vest :) I've got one question though: I'm using a 4,5mm yarn and needle. How long (in cm) should the very first row of slip knots be (where you are chaining up 24)? I definitely have to chain up more than 24, using a smaller needle. I just can't figure out how many haha

Thanks so much! The very first row measures about 19cm or 7.5” and when you’ve done another row or two it should be measuring around 14cm/5.5”. So it might be a good idea to measure that starting chain and then measure again after a couple of rows 😊 but as long as it’s close enough I’m sure it will work! I’m so glad you like it!! You could use acrylic, wool or a wool blend - they would all work well. The yarn I used is 52% Merino and 48% Acrylic and I’ve also made this vest in 100% acrylic so it will just depend on what you prefer/budget. I hope this helps 🥰🥰

Thank you! 🥰🥰 it will depend a bit on the size and composition of the yarn you use so I can’t say for certain but I think it would be about 550grams /700 metres if it’s similar to mine 😊 I used balls that were 100grams and 125 meters each if that helps!

Thanks so much 🥰 I definitely think you could do it with single crochets! But you will need to do less rows. I think it would work if you followed the cm/inch measurements instead of the row counts. You may also need to do a couple less foundation chains for the bottom and chains for the underarm to shoulder portion but that also depends on how long you want it to be 😊

Hey! Wonderful pattern 💗 I have a question, would it be okay to use a 5mm hook with weight 4 yarn throughout? Will it take more time? Will the stitches look different? I just started crocheting 6 months ago so i don't really know....

Thanks so much!! And yes it would definitely work to use a 5 mm hook weight 4 yarn but it would make the vest a bit smaller if you use the stitch counts for your usual size. So you could either follow the centimetre and inch measurements instead of the stitch count, or if you would prefer to follow the stitch counts, you could make one of the bigger sizes - you could start off by making the first row with the centimetre and inch measurements and then compare that to the number of stitches in the other sizes and that might give you an idea of which size to follow. The stitches won’t look any different but they will be a little bit smaller both in height and width, but other than that it shouldn’t be any different. It may take a little bit longer because you would be doing more stitches and rows, but I don’t think it would be significantly longer because the hooks not that much smaller - though that also depends on how tight you pull the yarn. Ooh good idea! I think maybe 8 rows with the decreases would be about right! I just tried mine on backwards and with the 4 decreases and it looked sort of like a mock turtle neck. So it probably depends how low of a crew neck you want - I’d guess that 8 decrease rows would bring it to the bottom of your neck and if you’d rather be a bit lower than that then maybe a couple of extra rows 😊

Thanks for the great pattern, I'm making it as a gift for someone right now! I noticed that after making the front panel, you fastened off and started the back panel separately. Would it be possible to continue the back panel without fastening off (going straight into the next row of back loop slip stitches)? Thanks!

I definitely think that would work to continue the front panel into the back panel 😊 you’ll have have to make sure that after you’ve done the first underarm section of the back panel that you end up at the correct end of the vest! If it the wrong end you could just add an extra row to get to the other side. The slip stitch rows are very narrow so one extra row won’t throw it off 😊 thanks so much!

how would i go about making this striped? is there a way without leaving a ton of ends to weave in at the end?

Hi! I think there is a couple of ways you could do it depending on how many colours you want and how thick you want the stripes to be. If you want an even number of colours like 2, you can do an even number of rows with each colour and the colour changes will line up all on one side of the vest so you can just pull the colour across and keep going. The ribbing would be stitched over the yarn that gets pulled across so you wouldn’t see it. The same thing would work with uneven number of colours and swapping on an uneven number of rows. Or at least I know it works with 3 colours - the ball should end up where you need it. I have a vest on my channel that uses 3 colours if you want to check it out for reference! You could also use multiple balls of each colour to make sure you have a ball at each end when you need it if you want an odd number of rows for the stripe but an even number of stitches or vice versa. Hey! Thanks so much 😊 I’m glad you like it!! The measurement for the 31 chains section is 20cm but I measured that after I’d done the next row - for me the chain row is normally a bit bigger because the slip stitches pull it tighter. I normally add about 15% so I think about 23cm for the chain and that should be around 20cm after the first row or two. If your stitches aren’t making the chain shorter though you could stick with the 20cm 😊 let me know if you need any other measurements or anything 🥰🥰🥰

Thanks so much! I couldn't say exactly the number of stitches and rows for weight 3 yarn as I haven't made a version of the vest with that weight but I think it would work if you use the cm/inch measurements in the video rather than the row and stitch counts. I think the only measurements I didn't include in the video are the foundation chain and the chain going from the underarm to the top of the shoulder - but if you come across another measurement you need please let me know! The very first row measures about 19cm or 7.5” and when you’ve done another row or two it should be measuring around 14cm/5.5” due to the slip stitches pulling it tighter. So it might be a good idea to measure that starting chain and then measure again after a couple of rows 😊 but as long as it’s close enough it should be fine! The measurement of the chain I do going from the underarm to the shoulder is 27cm/10.5" and then it's about 20cm/7.75" after you've done the next row or two. You will probably have to do a fair few more stitches and rows to what I did in each section! The other option to calculate how many rows and stitches you need would be to compare the gauge of your yarn to mine. The 10cm gauge for the slip stitch section with my yarn is 16 stitches by 24 rows - you could crochet a 10cm square with slip stitches and count the stitches and rows to work out the ratio. If you want to do it this way but you're having trouble working it out let me know and I'll see if I can help :) Also the gauge for the single crochet ribbing is 15 stitches by 12 rows.

Oh that’s so odd! Maybe it’s curling because of the tension? The only thing I can think of that might help is using a bigger hook might loosen it up a bit. Hopefully that would work!

Hey @pearlyriver! You can just add more stitches to the foundation chain to make it longer! I did 24 stitches in my foundation chain so if you wanted it you could just add more chains. You could measure from under your arm pit to where you want the vest to finish but make sure you leave room for both the ribbing around the arm and around the bottom if you want to include that :) I'd add about 4cm/1 inch for the arm ribbing and 8cm/2 inches for the waist ribbing - but those can also be adjusted for length if you want! Hopefully this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions

Hi Anna! Oh no! Sometimes the slip stitches will pull panels a little out of line because they are quite tight. Is it kind of a diagonal line at the bottom or more of a wavy line? I’d say as long as the stitch count is the same on both sides of the panel (or very close to the same) then stitching it together and adding the trim might even it out. If the stitch count isn’t even then I’m not really sure but I find that sewing on the trim does usually even out little bumps! Hopefully that helps a bit but let me know if you need any more info 🥰🥰🥰

No worries! I didn’t count my foundation chain in the rows of that first section - sorry if that was confusing! So I ended up at the opposite end of where my tail started - is that where you ended? If not you could add an extra row but also because the slip stitches are much the same size as the chain, one less or more row shouldn’t make too much of a difference overall 😊 please let me know if that doesn’t make sense 🥰

Hi, I would love to make this in 2xl, but I'm not sure how much yarn do I need. Can you help with this?

Hi! Its hard to tell exactly but I would guess around 800-900grams - but that will also depend on the yarn you are using and how many meters it has per 100grams. The finished vest for a 2XL would be around 85cm wide and 52cm in length. But that also won’t be exact. Hopefully this helps!

Hi! Yes the size of your yarn will effect the number of rows and stitches but the measurements will stay the same. So if you want to use a different size yarn you can do as many stitches or row as you need to do to reach the measurement for that section! Is the back panel supposed to be smaller than the front panel? for a small the front had 34+34+ 2 rows = 70 rows between the shoulder chunks. The back had 4+4 increase/decrease + 54 middle rows = 62 rows, so there's an 8 row difference between the front and back if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Angel! Yep that’s right 😊 I made the front panel a little bigger to leave a bit of extra room for the bust. You could definitely make both panels the same by adding 8 rows to the straight section at the back if you prefer 😊

Thanks so much! I’ve never made anything checkered with the backloop before but I think it might work! I haven’t tested it so i can’t be certain though. I worked out the ratio for stitches v rows to be about 1 stitch to every 1.75 rows so for eg if you wanted small checks you could change colour every 8th stitch and then swap the colours around again after every 14th row. Or bigger checks could be swapping colours every 16 stitches and 28 rows. If you want to do that though it’s probably a good idea to do a little swatch and make sure your like it because I couldn’t say for sure! I hope this helps 😊😊

Hi 😊 I find the easiest way is to count the number of stitches in a row that you know how no increases, and the count the number of stitches in the row you are up to. Then you will know how many increases you’ve done. If you were supposed to do say 6 rows of increases you should have 6 extra stitches after the 6 rows etc. Hopefully this help be please let me know if you have any trouble 🥰🥰

Hi! it's difficult to say for sure as I haven't make a vest with that size yarn before but I've tried to find an answer and it looks like for the 3ply yarn you'll need to use about double the amount of yardage/meterage I used due to the different size. My vest used about 560 meters so you may need around 1000 meters for an XS. Hopefully the yarn you want to use have the meterage on your label! But it's really just a guess because the yarns are so different in size. Sorry I could be more help!

I don't know why, but when working on the front panel, the increases aren't as 'high' as on the decreasing side of the V-neck? I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

Oh no! But you’re not necessarily doing anything wrong 😊 I think the first thing to rule out is that you haven’t missed any stitches. I found the increases very difficult to see sometimes and had to go back. You can count the stitches in the rows just to make sure you haven’t missed any. Each row should go up by one stitch (each raised and divot row) or it’s probably easier to count every two rows and make sure it’s gone up two stitches (the raised rows). If that’s not the problem then it’s probably all fine! Mine did look warped when I made it and it kind of looked a little curved almost. But when the panels are joined and the trim is added it all flattened out 😊 please let me know if you have any issues! 🥰🥰🥰

@@StephanieTashi I'm not sure, I got so frustrated because on one it was like 80 degrees on the increse and the other side maybe 30 degrees? I actually, though maybe this is silly, decided to approach it by crocheting the whole other side separately, and then attaching them in the middle :'D And when increasing, you do two single crochets in the last stitch when going up, then chain one, and then do two single crochets in the first stitch going down again, right? or did I get that wrong? I hope this approach I'm doing works out, and maybe if I make another vest (which is likely, if it fits me :D ) I will try again with the normal way. thank you so much, that's so nice of you 🥰

@@elliyo4286 that’s so annoying! But I get that! I much prefer doing decreases and would choose that when I can for sure. I have a vest similar to this with different colours on each side so I did pretty much what you described 😊 And yes that’s correct for the increases, I did two single crochets into the last stitch going up, chain 1 and turn and two single crochets straight away after. It can be really hard to see that last increase from the previous row sometimes - I had to go back a couple times cause I missed one here and there. Hopefully it works out better this way! Let me know if you have any more trouble 😊

Yeah I think it would work! There is no shaping as it stretchy so it will form to any body. The only thing is that it’s cropped so depending on their style, it might be good to make it a bit longer which would really just be lengthening the foundation chain for both of the panels and going from there. The sizing is also women’s so a men’s one would probably need to be a bigger size than what they would wear in men’s 😊 let me know if you need any extra measurements or anything!

Hi, hoping you can help me! I have done the front panel and ended up with my V being uneven - the first part (doing the decreases) is longer than the second part (increases) so I have got to the end where I have 34 rows of each and they aren’t the same length 😬 not sure how I’ve managed this - wondering if you have any idea 😅 I think I’ll have to redo it but I’m not sure what I’d do differently so I’m worried I will redo it and it will come out the same. Do you have any ideas? Do you know what I should do differently? Or if I can fix it without taking out all my rows? Any help would be much appreciated!! Thank you!!

Oh no! Is there a big difference between the lengths? I think the first thing I would do (and it probably won’t be fun) is count how many stitches there are in every row for the increase and decrease sections to try to work out where the differences are. Then at the very most you could just undo one side and make it the same as the first side you did. But also if there are only a few stitches different between the two sides you could probably just undo and couple of rows and add or subtract the stitches you need. If it doesn’t end up being the exact same number of decreases or increases to the pattern but it’s close, it should be okay and stitching the neck ribbing on will also even it out a bit as well. Hopefully that helps but please let me know if you need anything else 😊😊

I ran into this problem too!! I figured out I was skipping a stitch every other row on the increase part because the last stitch on the very end got really small so I skipped over it. I redid it a second time making sure to do the increase in the very very last stitch and it worked!

Hi! I used 4.5 skeins of yarn and each skein is 125 meters so I used about 563 meters in total in the end. My measurements are about 71cm for my waist and 84cm for my chest. I made a size small but it does have a bit of give though because it's stretchy :) I also used a needle to stitch all the panels and ribbing together but you could use a hook if you want to! I just personally like using a darning needle. I hope this helps :)

Thank you, How do I do the decreases for the neckline on my front piece if I have different measurements to you? Do I just take half of my center piece? I have 18 cm for the back. I would then take the decreases for the front piece until I am at about 9 cm and then take the same number of increases. Then it should actually be centered. Is that correct?

Hi! The yarn I used recommended a 5-5.5mm hook and I sized up to a 6mm because slip stitches tend to be tighter than other stitches. So check what your ball of yarn says to use and I would suggest going up a half size or a full size for your hook. And it’s also probably a good idea to do a small swatch, just to check that you like the tension 🥰

Hi! Did you want the measurement from the shoulder to the bottom or just for the section under the arm pit starting with the chain 24? The measurement of the bottom of the vest 14 cm not including the ribbing. But for the full vest from the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the ribbing its 48cm 😊

Hi! Sorry I should have gone into more detail on the video! I have another tutorial titled ‘Crochet cropped split colour sweater vest’ and that goes into more detail. It’s the vest with brown on one side and grey on the other and the only difference is the neck ribbing as it’s in two sections because it’s two colours - if you just ignore than part and stitch the whole neckline from one end to the other it’s the same. The section for stitching the panels together is at 24.28 and for stitching on the ribbing it’s 37.05 😊 hopefully this helps!

Hi Eeza 😊 any yarn that has a bit of stretch should work! I’ve made similar vests with 100% acrylic and they turn out the same! I’d steer clear of 100% cotton but anything that’s blended would probably be fine if it has some give 😊 I hope this helps!

The chain from the underarm to the shoulder should be about 27cm/10.5" and then once you've done the next row or two it should be about 20cm/7.75" - the slip stitches will pull the chain a bit tighter :)

Hi :) no problem! These are the measurements for my foundation chain and those first rows so I think if you make it with the same measurements and then use the other section measurements after that for the number of rows it should work out! The very first row measures about 19cm or 7.5” and when you’ve done another row or two it should be measuring around 14cm/5.5”. So it might be a good idea to measure that starting chain and then measure again after a couple of rows 😊 but as long as it’s close enough it should be fine! Also the measurement of the chain I do going from the underarm to the shoulder is 27cm/10.5" and then it's about 20cm/7.75" after you've done the next row or two. You probably have to do a fair few more stitches and rows to what I did in each section! The other option to calculate would be to compare the gauge of your yarn to mine. Your yarn ball might have the gauge on it but if it doesn't you could crochet a 10cm square with slip stitches and count the stitches and rows to work out the ratio. If you want to do it this way but your having trouble working it out let me know and I'll see if I can help :) Also the gauge for the single crochet ribbing is 15 stitches by 12 rows.

Oh no! The ribbing around the waist is around 8cm long so that will add a bit of length and you can make it longer too! The vest is fairly cropped but I can check the measurements on mine at the point you’re at to see how they compare if that helps! What part are you up to? Or size? @@victorxd4323 oh no that sucks! If you are still set on a crochet vest you could try a pattern that uses a bigger stitch and you might have just enough yarn! This pattern uses slip stitches which uses a lot of yarn so anything with double or half double crochet would be a possibility! Not the same as this vest but I have a blue/yellow/orange vest on my channel that used about 220grams of cotton yarn so there might be other patterns out there people have for vests or tanks using less yarn 😊 otherwise crochet accessories are always fun too and they usually use less 😊 good luck! I’m adding sleeves to one of my vests and it’s not this one but I think they might work for this vest if they were made a little longer 😊 the video should be up pretty soon so might be helpful! But otherwise you could probably take the sleeves from another sweater pattern you like and add them to this vest - but making sure to measure so they’re the right length 😊

I think because of the underarm decreases, a straight rectangle sleeve might not work. I think I would make a shaped sleeve that is a bell shape at the top. I have a mauve/purple cardigan tutorial and I think a sleeve in that shape could work! I use a thicker yarn so the stitch counts wouldn’t be the same but I included the measurements so that might help! And other people would have tutorials with similar shapes arms though 😊 hopefully this help!

Hi! The vest is a bit stretchy so it will depend a bit how fitted you want it o be. But the easiest thing to do to widen the vest would be to follow one of the bigger sizes instead. You could do the length of your regular size which will be all the stitch counts going vertically, and all the row counts which will be the width in a bigger size 😊 I hope this help 🥰🥰

I feel like it’s not particularly heavy - the yarn I used is a mix of wool and acrylic so it’s not as heavy as if it were made of a more cotton based yarn. The finished vest (size small) was around 450grams total if that helps give you an indication 😊

Hi Jasmine 😊 the vest weighs just about 450 grams - hopefully you have something to weigh to compare! I used wool yarn for this vest but I have a very similar vest to this one made from acrylic yarn and it’s a bit lighter. It’ll definitely depend on the yarn that you use and neither version are particularly light but I don’t notice their weight while I’m wearing them. The yarn I used for this one says each ball is 125 meters and 100 grams incase that helps you pick a yarn if you decide to make it 😊
