Here's another in-depth tutorial! I did my best to make sure everyone can have their own Perplex Shrug ✨
Everything about yarn, hook, sizes... is all clearly presented & instructed in the video. So, make sure you don't miss a thing ;)
This Crochet Perplex Shrug is an original ABoC Studio's design. The pattern was written with love & care by me, Natalie. Feel free to share the pattern, and sell your final hand-crafted product. In all cases, make sure you credit ABoC Studio. Thank you 🤍
✧ Are you an Absolute Beginner?
Even though this is an easy pattern, it combines a variety of techniques & methods which could prove to be overwhelming to an absolute beginner. Therefore, I suggest you to start with 1 or 2 simpler projects:
• Crochet Skirt: • Crochet Skirt - In-dep...
• Crochet Ear Flap Hat: • Crochet Ear Flap Hat -...
• EASY Crochet Bag: • EASY Crochet Bag - In-...
This bag tutorial includes some important techniques. However, you should also practice a little more with a project that makes use of mostly Double Crochet, such as:
• Crochet Bikini: • Crochet Summer Top & B...
• Crochet Corset Top: • Crochet Corset Top - I...
✧ Why a Loose Chain?
The foundation chain normally turns out to be stiffer than the stitch rows. Hence, while Dc rows have an incredible degree of stretch, we need to take advantage of this stretchiness by adding more space/loosening up our chain loops (not letting the stiff chain take away our stretchy privilege 😉). It may looks & feels a bit wonky at first. But don’t worry, the stitches will pick it all up later on, when we crochet at the foot of the chain!
✧ Why LU2C:
Traditionally, we would chain 2 for Dc and chain 3 Tr at the beginning of a row (count as 1st stitch). LU2C is an alternative/more efficient method (developed by ABoC Studio), to avoid the struggle of inserting your hook into the tight chain loop for the row’s last stitch. Moreover, LU2C will create cleaner & neater edges for a swatch/flat surface of Dc or Tr.
✧ How to Adjust and Improvise the Pattern:
Instead of following the pattern’s size guide, it is recommended to study ONLY the techniques & methods shown in the video to crochet the Shrug, while figuring out the right number of chains, number of rows, and number of decreasing stitches.
The structure of this design is built in the following order:
1. Shoulder (3 first rows) - back/bridge (rows between shoulders) - offset chain & the other shoulder - bind off
2. Attach yarn for ties - triangle flap - chain string - bind off - repeat on the other side
3. Add armpit chain - join round - upper sleeve - lower sleeve - hand detail/thumb hole - last rows & edging - bind off - repeat on the other side.
NOTE:
- The scale of back/bridge flap ties depends on the number of the foundation chains. Please keep in mind that the foundation chain also affects the scale/width of the sleeves.
- There is no need to save much fabric for the shoulders. I find 3 rows (~2 inches) work well for all sizes’ shoulders.
- Please check back/bridge piece’s stretchiness for the perfect fit.
- When attaching yarn to make the flap tie, make sure you leave some stitches/space between the bridge and the flap (this space is part of the neck-line).
- The number of the armpit chain affects the sleeve’ scale.
✧ Weaving the Ends/Tails the right way

This is so helpful and easy to follow along! However, I did have issues with the sizing (I am a M usually but here my arm was too fat for M and I ended up using L) so I suggest to everyone to try it on once you do the armpit chains - make sure they fit your armpit comfortably! Also I did do extra rows (maybe extra 8? lol) for the arms to make them longer and fit my arm length. Do I have disproportionate arms to the rest of my body ??? lolllll Super cute design and super easy to do, I will be making for my friends and family!! Thank you soo much for making this video, the editing was well done and everything was easy to understand. People like you deserve great things

I really wish I would have seen this before finishing one full sleeve :') the arm is totally fine but the armpit chain is quite tight if I want to wear it as a "sleeve seam". do you think blocking the chain out could work or is frogging necessary?
@vanessahe2671
@vanessahe2671 9 месяцев назад
@@kinkyswirly79 OMG. i wish i had seen this earlier. this is definitely too late but imo i would try blocking the piece (if you haven't already), but if it doesnt work... i guess its time to frog or even make an entirely new one. tbh it was still kinda too tight for me so i'll prob make a new one! this pattern is so easy to make, i don't feel too much loss remaking it. lmk how yours went!!

i love this pattern so so much! it's lovely and I'm very thankful you post such in depth tutorials for free for us to enjoy, Natalie, you are amazing ❤️‍🔥 I've seen some comments complaining about their size being wrong and that happened to me on my first try, even with the recommended hook size, and it was due to the loose tension recommended in the video. My tension is inconsistent and tends to fall on the tighter side; what I did was to use a 6mm hook for chains and a 5.5mm hook for the rest, instead of using a 5mm hook as recommended. Hope that helps some people struggling with sizing! Thanks again, Natalie ❤

@ABoCStudio
@ABoCStudio Год назад
Hi 💝 tysm!!! For stretchier fabric, I suggest you to use yarns that fluffier and have more volume instead of something stiff and rough. When you pinch the yarn and let go it should bounce back, or something hairy together with big size hook ( like the No.3 lace mohair yarn in the video, I crochet with a 5.0mm hook 🌿)

@ABoCStudio Год назад
Hi, tysm 💞 With the 4mm the stitches would turn out smaller so you might want to up size or adjust the patterns size on your own (instructions for adjustment is in the description)✨

Thank you so much for this pattern, I'm so excited to start!! For a medium size with lace yarn (0) should I still use 5.5mm hook?

Yes, go with the 5,5 and light tension ✨💞

the tutorial is amazing!! but may i know the gauge swatch?
@ABoCStudio
@ABoCStudio Год назад
Hi, the gauge for the specific Shrug I made in this video (5mm hook, fine weight, cotton blended with merino): 15 sts and 8 rows (4") But it's gonna be extremely different with different types of yarn, please watch from to find out more 3:15 💞 And you'll see gauge is not very useful for this design because we need to pay more attention to stretchiness of the fabric. If you want to adjust & improvise the pattern accordingly to your preference, you can find out more about how to do it in the description ✨

I love your tutorial! It is simple and easy to follow! I had a question about the armpit sizing, I have followed the size guide you provided but the armpit is coming out a little tight, would it be fine to add a couple of stitches to the chain stitches and then slip stitch? (I would prefer the arm a little looser anyway) Thank you for your lovely tutorial!
@ABoCStudio
@ABoCStudio 9 месяцев назад
Yes absolutely, you can add some more chains to that under-arm chain ❤❤❤❤

hey tysm for this tutorial it was so easy and fun to follow! i have a question tho, is it possible to make the back piece longer by adding stitched even after the whole shrug is completed? i tried it on and feel like its abit too short for my liking

Hello, For the intermediate crochetter using size 1/ super fine yarn. Do you still recommend using a 5.5mm hook. Or should I go with a smaller one ?
@ABoCStudio
@ABoCStudio Год назад
Hi 💕 I would recommend you use the same hook as mentioned the pattern 💫
@goldenmelanin
@goldenmelanin Год назад
Hi, the tutorial is lovely. If I wanted to do the longer version where its a top when you first made it (like in the ig pic), approximately how many more rows did you have for example if it was a size S(small)
@ABoCStudio
@ABoCStudio Год назад
It kinda depends on the materials and how stretchy the fabric that yarn create, also the measurement of your chest. For me specifically, with no2 wool yarn, I added about 8 more rows 🧶💫
@roroxxxx7105
@roroxxxx7105 Год назад
If I’m using a smaller hook should I follow a bigger size than the one you recommend. Like for example I wear size S but since I’m using a 3,5 mm hook, should I follow the measurements of size L?
@ABoCStudio
@ABoCStudio Год назад
You should definitely go up size, or you can adjust the pattern accordingly to your tools ✨
