FAQS:
Will these hurt?: I have had questions from some about whether these will hurt upon contact. I bit the bullet and let my husband throw one at me TWICE. I personally didn't think that it hurt. I would use the same rules as I would advise with regular water balloons: don't throw at the face/head and don't throw TOO hard. Make sure they are clean and free of debris. This free pattern is published for inspiration purposes only. Make/use these at your own risk and encourage your children to use them carefully :)
How do you fill them?: You don't! Just soak them in water-they work like a sponge :)
Can I sell these?: Absolutely! I just ask that you don't reproduce the pattern in any way (in print or electronically) and that you use your own pictures for your sales. Come back and let me know how they sell for you!
Can I used a different yarn?: In this instance I am not sure other yarn would work quite as well as the Bernat Blanket yarn. You can use any kind of Bernat Blanket yarn (big ball, stripes, baby blanket, brights) but I can't guarantee that water balloons made with an entirely different yarn would work the same way.
My balloons look much bigger/smaller than yours!: No worries! That's just a difference in tension. If your balloons are turning out too large, you can go down in hook size. If your balloons are too small, go up in hook size or loosen up your tension :) I also have a pattern for Mini Water Balloons available here: www.leftinknot...

I have used these with my grandkids for several years and they love them. We live in an apartment that won't let us have a small pool so these are great for summer fun

My friend's kids had a couple of these at our softball game. They were throwing them at each other, and they were having a blast! I thought they would hurt, but they threw them at me, and it didn't hurt. They are 3 and 6 years old, so I can vouch for the no pain when hit!

Great tutorial! A school teacher friend asked me to look into making these for her field day. I've now made one, and can see they are quick, easy, and I can make a ton of these out of one Big Ball. I'll make up a dozen or so, then give them to her so her family of all boys can "test" them out. Love that they're washable and reusable!

I’m very excited to try this pattern. Can I just say, I find it so intriguing that you switch between yarn over and yarn under and your stitches. no matter how hard I try I can’t do a fast yarn under. I have to be specifically focused to be able to do it. 😂

Pro-tip to anyone else who is new to crochet and trying this pattern: the instructions are clear and easy, but DO NOT make your first one yellow. The lemon you end up with is a bit disheartening, but the more you make the better you get. Do the yellow balloons last.

Can this be made using non-polyester yarn - these are 100% polyester and add to the microfibres...? Thank you for a brilliant alternative to water balloons though!
@tracyannettewhitefield7470
@tracyannettewhitefield7470 3 года назад
No. Natural yarns do not work. Only chenille yarns will work for this purpose. However, just by using this acrylic yarn and creating fun REUSABLE balloons instead of using rubber or latex balloons (the missed or discarded scraps of which can choke birds and other wildlife), you are preventing a lot of pollution and waste.

A crochet technique question - sometimes when you insert your hook you hook over to pull up a loop instead of yarn over. Does that make a difference? Thank you.
@DizzyIzzyArt
@DizzyIzzyArt 2 года назад
I know you asked this 10 months ago but there is a difference between yarn under and yarn over. Yarn under makes it a bit tighter, but it probably won't make too much of a difference in this pattern

I'm a loose crocheted in general, I was trying to figure out what I was doing differently. It was the way I was holding my yarn. I intertwine the yarn so that it pulls up next to my left pointer finger and then I start crocheting lifting the yarn over my finger. I hope this helps!

Codi Way that’s what I did, so changed the pattern a bit and it worked! 2nd row- 8 dc in to 1 st row, slst, ch2 3 rd/4th row repeat 2nd row 5th row- dcdc to 8 ,st, ch 2 6th row- dcdc to 4 ,st, ch 2 Last row- sc around 2x to make balloon tie/handle and then slst and weave ends in! First time writing a pattern hope that helps anyone having issues with sizing! Thank you for your reply.

Bernat yarn is made of polyester, which may release micro plastics into the water. Please use natural fibers for water balloons, like wool, cotton, or hemp.

@Trevor McDowell thing with wool, the more you'll play with it (or then wash it) it will end up all felted and hard as a rock!
@chantalegudule
@chantalegudule 5 лет назад
@Trevor McDowell to my kmowledge, inly wool felts when washed. Coton thiugh has a tendancy to stink if you don't soak them and wash them thoroughly (like the dishclothes, can't stand them 🤢 ) and I've never worked with hemp....

@tracyannettewhitefield7470

Wool and cotton etc DO NOT WORK for this pattern. It is the particular type of chenille blanket yarn used that makes it work. It’s what makes it absorbent yet still soft enough not to hurt. It needs to “splat”! Wool and cotton will hurt when hit with the water balloons. Do not substitute the yarn.
