Crockett Rifle Range Day - Testing the completed kit and fixing issues

Two months after putting the Traditions kit together, I take it out to the range to test and fine tune the fruits of my labor. I found it necessary to shim the back of the barrel up to ensure good hammer to nipple contact.

You may want to try a number 11 percussion cap instead of the 10's. It looks like (in the close-up camera shot of your lock when firing) that the cap is not fully resting down on the nipple, but is held up, because the cap is to tight.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview

That could be part of it but I found that the biggest issue was the tang being too low in the stock. Thanks for watching!

To know if the ball is fully seated, simply toss the ramrod down the bore when you think its seated. If it bounces, the ball is on the charge of powder. If not, push once more.

I inherited my Grandfather's CVA Squirrel rifle some 20 plus years back and it was in bad shape, so I ended up completely redoing it and one thing I found is that the nipple on those guns, which is pretty much the same on the Traditions guns, was pretty awful so I found one that allows me to use musket caps. That completely changed how the gun works, even as old as the gun is and the fact the kit quality back in the 70's was dismal, I'm amazed at how well it really works.

Had the same issue with mine as well as did several other people. We all fixed it the same way. The hammer was touching the top of the lock plate. All that needs to be done is to grind off the inside of the hammer with a Dremel tool. This is more than likely your problem. 100% functioning now on all of these rifles.

As you're dialing in the rifle, use a fine bead or post hold at 25 yards. Holding a full bead or post at 50 should compensate for the drop without having to hold over. This will keep you from obscuring the target at longer range, allowing for better accuracy. While dialing the rifle in, try different powder charges. You'll eventually find one that shrinks your groups significantly.

@SmallCaliberArmsReview

Thanks Squib! I thought there would be more smoke myself, maybe it was because of the small diameter and the long barrel. Maybe there was more complete combustion? Sometimes RU-vid doesn't like when you show repairs/modifications to firearms, even if they're not considered "firearms". I was a little worried about showing it in too much detail. On small bore muzzleloaders there is a problem with fouling turn in the barrel between shots works really well to swap the barrel between shots is alcohol on a Cotton Patch the alcohol evaporates quickly so you can load your follow-up shot with just one patch down and out of the barrel and a deep cleaning
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview 3 года назад
I ran two patches between each shot, one wet with the Thompsons bore cleaner followed by a dry patch. Loading felt about the same each time, no excessive force to get the ball seated against the powder. I may increase the load to 25 grains to see if the accuracy gets any better. Thanks for watching!

Looks like a light, pretty little rifle, but those caps shouldn't be snapping. I've got an old custom made 54 in the Leman pattern with an Uncle Mike's nipple. It's never snapped and I've owned it since the mid 80s. I've used sandwich wrap taped around the lock area and another fitted loosely with a rubber band around the muzzle. I've hunted with it all day on the rain and fired it off on the evening. L*R lock, Green Mountain barrel, and reworked Thompsom Center triggers. If those old sidelocks are properly fitted, they're dependable.

I have seen old antique guns with a thin layer of metal, about stove pipe thickness, shaped to fit over the drum and the breech and wood to protect against corrosion and burning the stock from the caps. They had bored a hole and screwed the nipple through the metal and into the drum. If the nipple was tightly seated and with light loads of 20 grains I'd see no problems with it and it would serve a double purpose, raising the nipple a little farther up and protecting the back of the barrel and the stock wood. Just a thought.

I sold mine at a gun show for $150.00 and I thought the guy was ATF or something he wanted it bad,....It was a kit I put together and it looked good I did the stock green and used 6 coats of Polly. I worked at a golf factory that refinished wood drivers,....so I could take a break and shoot a stock. Where can you find an affordable kit now. I found a inline 54 caliber for $99 so I bought 2.

I really couldn't say for sure, but according to "True West Magazine", there are 3 rifles associated with Davy Crockett. A .48 caliber flintlock, a .40 caliber flintlock and an unknown caliber rifle believed to be a caplock. I believe the traditions version is mostly a marketing ploy. Regardless of the name, it's not as ornate as either of the true Crockett rifles that are displayed but it's still a load of fun to both build and shoot. A smooth consistent push on the ramrod all the way down is all that is needed. Beating the ball with the ramrod up and down is stupid and can deform your ball. There is no reason for for beating the ball and is a stupid habit people really need to stop.

Traditions owes you a stock. Unless the bolster sits right down on the top of the rounded cutout of the lock plate you will never get good accuracy. The lock needs to be fitted at the proper angle front to back as well as up and down to achieve this in order to support the barrel in a way to prevent rotational torque from the falling hammer. The tang screws and barrel wedge are not enough. I have seen their trapper pistol with the wedge plates offset as much as 1/8 inch and the wedge was at a god awful angle. They have some quality control issues in their wood working department. In your case the rear of the lock plate is too low and nothing you can do to fix it correctly and still have it look nice. The wood around the lock was carved out such that the lock sits too low in the back and the front of the lock plate is too high. This angle is important as well as the bolster touching the lock plate.

You made a comment about the powder flask havili 35 grain spout. You should NEVER ! NEVER! Add powder to the rifle after shooting from a powder flask or Powder Horn. If there is a burning ember in the bottom of the barrel it will flash back up the barrel into your powder flask and explode in your face. Always put the powder into a powder measure and then pour the powder down the barrel never never dumped it directly into the barrel from the powder flask or Powder Horn

You are correct. I guess it was somewhat misleading the way I said it, I didn't mean that if it were 20 grain spout, I'd dump it in the barrel. I think I explained it better in some of my other Black Powder videos. Thanks for pointing that out and thanks for watching!

I did a video on putting the kit together, I hope you get a chance to check it out. The short story is; Tru-Oil.

Why are,you 3fff powder instead of 2ff powder
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview 3 года назад
During my research, fff was the most recommended powder for the Crockett rifle. FF was recommended for .50 cal.

This is what you get when you buy a cheap rifle kit.

The problem is fixed and it works fine now. Who makes a better kit for this rifle anyway?

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview Don't buy a kit. Buy individual parts and personalize it.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview 2 года назад
@@larryd1296 I would love to do something like that in the future, heck, I'd love to forge and rifle my own barrel some day. As a muzzleloader "newbie", these kits are a great way to get introduced to the hobby. I know some people that make every part by hand and hopefully in the future, I'll get a chance to document the whole process. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.

Nice video but I wish you guys would stop teaching new blackpowder shooter's to beat the ball out of shape by repeatedly smashing the ramrod down on the ball. Consistency of the pressure between ball and powder lead to accuracy and that cannot be achieved by what you guys are doing.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview 2 года назад
I've never had anyone tell me any different before, I'm new myself. I've never thought about the ball being deformed before. I'm not sure how much deformation is occuring when I do that but, I would imagine even a small nick in the ball could catch some air and change the trajectory. Thanks for the advice, I'll use it in the future.

Have you ever measured your BP brass scales on a reloading scale to see how close they are , with various brands of powder ?
