I didn't know what to think about the new Ibanez Quest headless line. I thought the first pics were disappointing and didn't say "Ibanez" to me at all. Then I held them in my hands in Italy and was intrigued... NOW I can finally check it out!

I bought one of these last week from a local music dealer. I absolutely love it! It’s extremely light and small, easy to play, and between the electronics and construction the sounds are very versatile and balanced compared to my other guitars (which are not cheap guitars by any means). Ibanez nailed the headless thing in my opinion
@valebliz

I never even tried a headless. My main question is, why? There's any advantage you feel playing it other then the cool looks?
@stevenhirsekorn3444
@stevenhirsekorn3444 2 года назад
@@valebliz it's just smaller, easier for travel. I tried the 2 humbucker version of this guitar and it felt like a ukulele and unless you play with the guitar way up on your chest the slanted frets are not very comfortable imo. I didn't really care for it the neck was VERY small so if you have man size hands you might find it a little uncomfortable
@terryenglish7132
@terryenglish7132 2 года назад
@@valebliz 40 to 1 tuning ratio vs 16 or 18 standard. I've come back to my Spirits both small and large bodies after months and they don't need to be tuned. B T W I had small body Spirits back in the '90s when they were all Maple except for the Rose fingerboard. I bought a new one which is Maple neck, dyed Rose or Ebony fingerboard, Linden (Basswood) body and it sounds much, much better; as good as a normal guitar. And EMG Selects has upped its game, alto obviously ceramic, they sound fantastic.
@dwightlewis3519
@dwightlewis3519 2 года назад
@@valebliz They balance well because there are no tuners at the headstock to cause neck dive. They're extremely light, about 5 to 6 lbs (2.3 to 2.7 kg). They keep a full scale length while shortening the overall length of the guitar. Also, if the quality of the hardware is good, they'll have somewhat better tuning stability since the strings clamp at the nut similar to a floyd rose guitar.
@iancrespo_
@iancrespo_ 2 года назад
@@valebliz most companies offering headless pass them off as ergonomic guitars, creating the ideal session experience. a lot of them are extremely lightweight (my strandberg boden 7 weighs in at 5lbs), making long performances a bit more tolerable. took me a while to get into it but now im obsessed! i understand it might not be everyone’s thing aesthetically, but i would encourage at the very least having one for practicing or tracking/demos in studio sessions

I enjoy the neck on the strandberg a bit more, it's super ergonomic and I'd even warrant that for the extra 300 difference between this and the strandberg boden classic (if you can get a used/refurb), the strandberg neck is definitely worth it. Otherwise, I demoed the Ichika version of this model and it is super nice, I do feel like the Quest series is a great bang for your buck option. Also, birds eye maple neck is really cool, although I love the roasted maple on my strandy. GL on the decision though!

I think Ibanez has been talking to a lot of people who don’t buy Ibanez, and one of the things they’re hearing a lot is that those potential customers don’t like the looks that are associated with Ibanez. So they’re actively trying to add lines that don’t immediately look like Ibanez.

EVO gold frets to my understanding are an alloy that is harder than nickel but softer than stainless steel. Idea is that you don’t get the notorious acoustic ping stainless gives you but harder than nickel to avoid re-leveling or re-fretting.
@michaeltyler1834
@michaeltyler1834 2 года назад
They were created as a hypoallergenic alternative for people with nickle allergies. In my opinion they are just as durable and corrosion resistant (thanks to the added silicon and titanium) as stainless but much easier to work with. EVO frets are by all accounts a true Goldilocks and lie almost directly between Nickle Silver frets and Stainless Steel frets on the Vickers hardness scale. Hell of a spec on a guitar at this price range and i hope to see more makers following suit

I got the same one you are reviewing about 2 months ago, it went back. I did just swap it for another but with the straight normal frets. The angled frets were really throwing me off. Again that's just me I gave it 10 days, couldn't get used to it. I don't do all the tappy two hand stuff so I don't see any advantage for a regular player. My two biggest complains were the switch knob exactly same as Henning, but also the bridges. I put 9's on it and your really have to stretch those strings out and pull tight as you can before clamping strings in headstock. There is only so much travel, so basically tune it up, stretch strings, retune. Unless you really pulled tight, you do not have enough travel. However I do like the guitar, it is my main practice guitar in the living room and travel as well because it is light and small. However still fully functional and full scale. I am not sure I would ever use it to play live though.

Apples and oranges. The Vola is not headless, and it's not designed to be ultra-ergonomic and lighweight like the Quest. The Vola doesn't have the same pickup switching system. That said, they're gorgeous instruments, made in Japan. I've been lusting over their single coil 7 strings for some time.

I'll be receiving my QX52 tomorrow, I personally love the Q's body shape, looking forward to playing this, experiencing the 8 degree slanted frets. If I love this I'll be getting the 7 string fairly soon and other than my AZ re-homing some guitars that won't be played as much. Props to Ibanez for daring to move beyond tradition and continuing to innovate.

i would like to have one of these ibanez guitars, but not with these fanned frets, instead frets like the ones Tolgahan Çoğulu built in, to play some eastern scales oriented stuff^^. i think microtonal was the term for it.

It looks so nice but why did they not make it multiscale? The frets are already skewed. Might as well reap the benefits of MS.

Thankyou for this & thankyou all for yesterday. A question to all: Given I know nothing, how important is the wood body to a guitar? If it were carbon fibre or a laminated wood, would that change its sound? And if it does: can its aberrations be corrected for? Henning I just saw your message about storage but I'm not on FB! If I may can I write a report for you, which will be worth every pfennig you pay for it (ie nothing) with some initial suggestions to discuss. But I first want to run it past a few Muscian & Cinematography mates at Google & Nasa who have forgotten more than I know.

There are electric guitars made of concrete, acrylic, and epoxied cardboard and they sound the same as ones made of wood. This is a debated topic because people like to keep believing what they do and it's grateful material for marketing copy, but there's no influence of wood quality on electric signal, not even a little bit, and no one has ever produced sufficient evidence or a physical explanation that would point to the contrary. But it's a good question to start a flame war and drive up Henning's algorithm, so well done.

@@martinkrauser4029 Someone with a brain. God yes. This a million times. Guitars can be made out of plastic, concrete, carbon fiber (see: Etherial Guitars) and even a fucking shovel and they will all sound like electric guitars. Tonewood is just BS.

@@martinkrauser4029 I just remember all the people building guitars at my school in the woodwork shop. I can't remember if it was a formal build an instrument class or not. I do remember sitting in the physics shop trying to manufacture our own pickups by copying commercial ones & ending up with stuff that a. barely worked b. sounded terrible! Making a good sounding working pickup is definitely an art! But its strange that companies are making guitars from sections of wood bonded together because back then everybody just got a chunk of wood, rough shaped it on the bandsaw, then fine shapped it with chisels (& drills) for the outside & spaces for pickups etc. And then used the lathes & machine sanders to make it comfortable. Making the neck was always a pain trying to cut the spaces for the frets to the right depth so they didn't end up wobbly. It was the reason why I asked was because nobody back then particularly cared about what the wood was other than it looked good when it was stained & varnished. These days with tabletop routers in hackspaces the idea of making another guitar actually sounds appealing if I hadn't got a heap of other higher priority things to do.

I played a strandberg and then immediately a ibanez after and the difference was pretty extreme. I didn't like the ibanez quest or the other newer ibanez headless guitar, and this is coming from an ibeanez fanboi. I have 4 ibanez prestige guitars and 2 Ibanez basses all japanese made.
@A-Wa

what was the difference?
@funknotik
@funknotik Год назад
@@A-Wa The tuners, the pickups, and the neck profile are the first things that I could immediately notice, the components felt kind of cheap in comparison. I bought a 7 string Strandberg NSX and it's the best guitar I've ever played, the tonal options with the fishman fluence pickups are really impressive also. Still maybe in the future the ibanez built quality will improve, like maybe there will be a Prestige custom shop headless guitar soon from ibanez, that would have better components.

@Waggel86
@Waggel86 2 года назад
Looking at 6 strings. The Standard 6 with trem is €1700 at Thomann. The most expensive Quest is €1200. €500 at this price point is quite a bit. Although you'll probably get your Strandberg a lot quicker. I have a Strandberg Prog 6 myself. Fantastic guitar but certainly not perfect. As far as the body shape goes, if you don't play in classical position you don't really notice much difference. Also, the upper strap button is on the back of the body, poking your chest which is a tad annoying. The neck heel is slimmer on newer, higher end models. Not sure if the Standard have those already. The older neck heel is thicker than you'd expect on something this modern. Last big difference is the frets. On the Ibanez they're slanted, equal angle along the neck. Strandberg uses fanned frets. On the 6 strings the 0 fret is parallel with the angle becoming steeper further down. Combined with the 20" fretboard radius, bigger chords can get rather awkward the higher you go.

I wish they would bring back the Darkstone or the DN. I only got to play one once in a music store many years ago but I've been thinking about that guitar ever since. It was amazing. a little les paulish, a little PRSish but still an Ibanez. Now you can barely find them and the ones you do find are probably either fake or they're like triple what they're worth

I had a Steinberger many years ago and the tension seemed very different near the nut. It always kind of bugged me, though I loved the sound and feel of the guitar. I eventually got rid of it but honestly regret it. Anyway, if that difference in string tension normal for headless guitars or unique to that Steinberger?

Now that you mentioned it, the Spirits are like that too. I never bothered me so I kind of forgot about it and just accepted thats how it was. There are Headless brands that have a longer length between the nut and the string anchors, even more so than here. Its hard to tell if they're normalizing this phenomenon or just doing a design thats not already patented. W Henning's experience maybe that inch here is all you need.
