A lot of respect Scott! There will always be haters but you do you and provide for yourself, and help provide for those farmers, America, and the world. As someone who is from Iowa and has family in the farming industry up by Mason City and out by Iowa City, I respect the fact that you didn’t throw back hate and instead decided to educate. Good luck at Reno

The criers that whine about chemicals being used are woefully and most intentionally ignorant. They will take the time to whine and complain but NOT the time to do proper research on just what it is they are complaining about. Every single chemical compound, organic or inorganic has something called an SDS (safety data sheet) submitted with it for approval for use. Clearly listing the purposes, hazards and treatments (if necessary) of said chemical. People, actually groups of people, vastly more intelligent than yourself review and approve these chemical compounds everyday so, if you REALLY want to know WHY you are bitching, LOOK IT UP.

30 years ago we were doing 1 gallon work with Pencap in Nebraska and 10 gallon work in Louisiana. Those farmers in Louisiana wanted to see huge clouds of water. We managed to sneak it down to 5 gallons an acre and they didn’t notice. Same amount of chemical half the water. Half as many landings and a bunch more acres a day. People think Ag Pilots only fly the planes. I’ve changed engines, changed cylinders, fixed pumps, fixed broken trucks, washed airplanes and anything else that needed to be done. Up at 4:30am and if you’re lucky you’re done by 10:30pm. That’s what bug runs are like. Then there’s dealing with the farmers!!!! It’s a hell of a lot of work, but it was the best years of my life!! Be Safe and Keep a Firm Stick. You know when the stick goes soft you’re all done-Flying!

Hey Scott, keep the Duster videos coming please!!!! So many people seem to be so negative on pesticide since Monsanto got caught in the Roundup corral!!!! When was the last time anyone saw a crop duster or Ag Plane spraying Roundup??? They sprayed it or something similar in Vietnam and called it Agent Orange! Pesticides are necessary to have a decent crop at the harvest, period. I could watch a Crop Duster work all day long!!!! I’ve been known to stop what I’m doing and drive farther down the road just to watch one. When I was younger, I’d watch them spray the fields I was in, as I moved the sprinkler pipes. One pilot I knew would fly under the power lines and he would fly so low, you could hear the wheels hit the tops of the potato plants!!! He caught a power line once and I saw his plane go down. Another plane came and finished the field and I later asked him who finished the field? He said he got a ride to the airport and grabbed another plane and flew back and finished the field himself!!! What a man!!! I would have been an Ag Pilot, but when I got out of High School, the other Ag Pilots told me I need to make a million dollars to buy a plane. Now, I’m a 100% Disabled Veteran and Above Knee Amputee, with a low back injury. The FFA wouldn’t even allow me to sit inside an Ag Plane cockpit with the meds I have to take for nerve pain!!!! Otherwise, I’d have my pilot license and I would be flying an Air Tractor, Ag Cat or Ag Wagon for someone in the industry!!!! I’d find a way to latch my prosthetic foot onto the left rudder pedal to make it work!!!! So, I fly RC Aircraft. I’m a self taught RC Pilot. I have an Air Tractor 502B with a 92” wingspan. It weighs 16 lbs. ready to fly. I converted it over to electric, so it has the same weight on landing or take off!!!! It was made by Duane Habets in Conrad, MT, who just last year created and finished a beautiful Ag Cat, which has the radial engine and it’s a little bit larger than my Air Tractor 502B. I have a couple pics if you’re interested. Email me at flyintango@yahoo.com and I can send you some pics. Please keep the videos coming!!!! In my opinion, Crop Dusting is the closest thing to Military Fighter Pilot flying a Civilian can do. Crop dusting is so similar to a strafing run in a Corsair F-4U or P-51 Mustang!!!!! Fire Fighting with an Ag Plane seems mighty close to a One Man bombing run with a B-17 Mitchell or a B-24 Liberator!!!! I love to watch Ag Planes doing both Fire Dumping and Crop Dusting. However, if I had to choose one over the other and could only watch one, I’d pick the Crop Duster show every time!!!! Love those strafing runs!!!! Oh, and don’t you know the Vaught Corsair F-4U and the P-51D Mustang would each make an Awesome Crop Duster and/or Fire Bomber. Just keep the six .50 Cal guns active in the wings of each plane. You know, just a little pick me up, for those days when nothing seems to be going right. Just fly over a vacant field and take a real strafing run!!!! Give it the whole 9 yards in one shot!!!! Hahahahaha!!!! That’s where the saying came from ya know!? There’s 27 feet of belted ammo for the .50 Caliber guns in the wings of the Corsair and Mustang. When a pilot held the trigger down on a positive target, he’d say “I knew I had it, so I gave him the whole 9 yards” meaning he fired until his guns were empty!!! Have all the fun ya want!!!! I will make some more!!!!!

From an Old Duster Pilot in the Fla panhandle, Great video! Wish I had that camera technology when I was spraying back in the '80s.. Turbine power is the way to go but I still miss operating the old round motors.... . Thanx for educating the un-educated masses.

Hi Scott....I’ve been following these. I was a flagger in South Texas starting at age 12. (1962). Spraying cotton with malathion and dropleaf acid. I loved it even though I was covered in chemical daily. They finally let me ride ( legal?? No) in the rear of the Supercubs and I was hooked. I did that a few summers. They finally bought Pawnees. I could work three Cubs alone but Pawnees were too fast for that. I still fly, but after a career that included flying the country in HP Aircraft I now fly a beautiful Ercoupe around southern Oregon open cockpit. I love it. Your vids bring back wonderful memories as a kid. So thanks for that......of course I also watch your brothers stuff as well. But hey....I love the smell of malathion in the morning. Joe

Hey Scott, great flying ! Good luck trying to educate all the idiots that don’t have a clue what we do farming! Beenl farming since 76, cotton, corn, peanuts, we used to spray some hard chemicals back in the day, methyl parathion, azodrin, ,Lannate, this stuff we spray today you could gargle with its so weak! I’ve sprayed hundreds of gallons of roundup,it’s one of the safest chemicals we have . Sorry, back to your spraying, time you moved up to a Trush or Air Tractor! Fly safe

LOL I'd hate for you to see what most ag pilots fly under then. I've got a powerline running across my fairly short strip about 1/3 of the way down. It's the same height that you'd see in a residential neighborhood, so there's about 4ft of clearance with the tail up and wheels down...and it's not difficult to fly under even off the ground. It's no issue if you're taking off from the first 1/3 of the strip, you just roll under it. If you're taking off from the other 2/3 of the strip, you've gotta make a decision whether you can make it over the wire or fly under as close as you can get to the ground...without inadvertently hitting the ground and bouncing up into the wires. Landing is opposite, the first 1/3 means you have to stick the landing because one tap on the ground will bounce you straight into those wires. Land over and past the wires...you might not have enough runway to stop.

You chaps utterly amze me! As a PPL holder, I used to flyClub cometions & and had aerobatic certification - but we never did anything like that, steep turns excepted obviously. I suppose a lot of people would say that crop dusting aircraft are far from beautiful, but to me, they are. An aircraft’s beauty is for me, what the aeroplane can.do. & how it responds to its pilot - yours certainly fit that character, but to makeover the way you do, you must have a lot of faith in yoursel & the plane..

I'm flying in with a friend in his Bonanza to the Reno Air Races.... beyond excited for the trip. Spraying in general, what most don't realize is the farmer doesn't spray per a calendar rather they spray for a specific problem - the happiest farmer (happier? ;)) is one who doesn't have to spray at all because it costs a lot to spray and that cost comes directly from their bottom line.

Love your chemical explanation. Most people have no idea and think cropduster are killing everything. My dad was a cropduster. He owned and operated Dimmitt Aerial Spray from 1975 to about 2001. He had some crazy people try and sue but never won. He flew just about everything you can think of. He retired with an Airtractor 402. He did have a couple of AgCat but with the radial engines. Years ago I watched my brother-in-law spray potato fields in Aroostook County, Maine in a Bell 47 helicopter. I watched him fly right up to the power lines and wondered how he did not crash on those lines. He answered my question, "You don't look at the power lines to judge distance, you look for the power poles!" You appear to have a similar system to avoid crashing on the power lines. Stay safe.

Hello Mr. Palmer, This brings back memories. I worked ground in Georgia after the army in ‘78 then trained in PT-17s at Johnny Dorr’s school in Mississippi in 1980. I must have really bad timing as there was a drought that year. Made a couple of other attempts at ag flying but got bs’ed by a couple of operators. Wound up hauling freight in a Falcon 20 until 9-11 which killed my employer. Been teaching now for 17 years, but here lately,I’ve been feeling the old urge to get my hands on the stick. Oh well, that’s how it goes. I subscribed. Keep the greasy side down.

Very little Ag Aviation take place now due to enviromental laws, I believe the still spray Braken (Ferns) on the upper moorlands By the way Scott you are doing a great job, it would not be economic to spray Corn any other way, other than by arial application due to crop damage from machinery.

This man puts 360 gallons of Dihydrogen Monoxide in his plane and dumps it on earth. Every person who has ever died has ingested Dihydrogen Monoxide. Literally killing us all. ;) Awesome video! Think I’m going to fly a little higher off the ground for now...

Very cool camera angles! Thanks so much for taking us along. Audio was a little rough, but thanks for explaining.

+Cheryl Lougheed thank you, sorry about the poor audio, our old ag planes have lots of interference so getting cockpit audio at all was a small miracle

Corn fungus is pretty hideous. Google images of "Corn Smut" if you are interested. Great flying! I grew up in Iowa and I was trying to see if I could figure out where you were near. No luck, I'll have to watch again.

it may be hideous but its literally just a mushroom. the mexicans harvest that shit and sell it at a higher price than the corn itself would go for.

Nice video , please one day go thru airplane, engine horsepower, torque, maintenance schedule, dry weight of plane , how much fuel you carry and gallons per hour, top speed unloaded , ceiling height and what procedure for engine failure. Don’t pay too much attention to the nay sayers . You are providing all of American farmers a service to feed the world .

Thank you for dispelling all the fake news on what you do. Also as a FAA 107 Certified drone pilot myself, it makes no sense for a drone to do this job. Drones (hate the term - prefer multicopter) have their place in agriculture surveillance. Right tool for the right job I say! Keep up the videos, love this stuff, best of luck at Reno! cannot waif for 2019 Dead Cow fly in. Flying 🤠. We need a high wing emoji (Draco Please)!

BTW, depending on how long you have been flying, If you have ever been to a cropduster convention you probably have met him. He sold Weatherly Planes for a long while too.

High speed under powerlines is scary even in a hang glider! Looks like pretty engaging flying, man.

What an obstacle course! And I thought that I was a bit of a dare devil.....ag flying would certainly out of my skill range. I think I'll just take up knitting or something. Thanks for the vids!

Another great video Scott! Your skills have come along well from the guy who questioned if he’d be good at this! I was hoping to take the family to Reno, but the bank account is saying no right now. Maybe we’ll get to High Sierra. You probably pull less g’s than I have been for my job. I’ve been doing spectral and thermal imaging of ag fields around here (Bakersfield, CA). They don’t set up our passes in a racetrack so we have anywhere from 350’-1000’ between passes while going anywhere from 90-110 ground speed. Good thing we get to use Citabrias! Don’t worry about the hippies and granolas who have no clue. What you do is vitally important to the individual farmers and by extension the economy.
