Bonjour, what a great sandwich to have for lunch. I show you how to make a béchamel and flavor it with gruyere to top off this Croque Monsieur sandwich.
ingredients:
Sauce:
1 Tablespoon all purpose flour
1 Tablespoon butter
1 cup milk
dash nutmeg, pepper and salt (1/4 teaspoon each)
1/2 cup grated gruyere
Melt your butter and flour together, and cook for one and one half minutes.
Add your warm cup of milk.
Add your salt, white pepper and nutmeg
Continue to cook and allow to bubble for two minutes.
Add your cheese and turn off the heat, allow to cool down a little
You also need:
loaf of bread, baguette or french bread preferred
additional gruyere (total about 1/2 pound for this recipe)
3/4 pound shaved ham
dijon mustard
herbs de provence
Slice your bread and toast it to your liking.
Very lightly smear a little dijon on each slice of bread
Add your thin sliced ham
Add a bit of grated cheese
Top with the other slice of bread
Add 1/4 of the cheese sauce
Top with more of the cheese
Bake 400F for 15 minutes
Serve with pickles and tossed green salad
Makes 4 sandwiches
The bread that you choose is important, so that you get the crusty crunch out of the oven.
The typical American Sandwich Bread is not recommended, but you can do what you want.
The Swiss Gruyere is very Very good on this, I hope you can use it when making this.
