i was able to crossbreed my female pineapple swordtail with my male Redtail Dalmation Platy that has a lot of spots and got a hybrid! (only one fish was born lmao)
I personally breed livebearers and I've see many different characteristics being shared. And I have experimented with making a stable species of guppy platty but if you do get them to mate the odds are low and even if you do you find them to be infertile. But you can breed all livebearers together no matter what specific family they are close enough genetically to do it
I think I had a guppy transition from female to male. I had taken the males out of a tank. The idea was to have 10 for $5 endler guppies breed with fancier guppies. Suddenly there is a sort of strange looking (belly and body too big to be a male that came from the same fry) in the tank. maybe I missed a male. But all the other males from that fry have grown up to be smaller and had color several weeks ago. Don't tell Alex jones...

Guppies and platies are two different families. Guppies are from the Poeciliidae family, while platies are from the Xiphophorus. They can't crossbreed. What you may have is a cross platy swordtail. It's definitely not a guppy/ platy. If you're lucky enough to get a mix between the two then it will almost certainly come at a cost to health and fertility
@@UriShasha yes the molly and guppy. Not impressed tbh. The offspring don't look anything like as nice as a molly and not worth the effort of breeding the two. Plus come with health problems which really isn't fair on the fish
If you're to interbreed pay premium for a show grade trio of sail-fin Molly and a trio of show grade ribbon-fin elephant ear guppy. Then just move them around when you want to cross. Yes, hybrid are sterile. However a "Elephant ear, Sail-fin dorsal, Ribbon fin, Delta tail" hybrid, will be worth the buy, even if you can't breed them.

Swordtail x platy crosses aren't really hybrids though. Modern swordtails and platies although classified as different species are all to at least some degree hybrids of each other, not to mention that there is more than one wild platy species that have been heavily hybridized with each other. The variatus platy is the longer and somewhat slimmer form of platy, and the southern platy is the shorter and stubbier kind. Each form will be predominantly their respective species but will have had southern platy or variatus platy ancestors respectively, and both would have swordtail ancestors at some point.

I recently bought some male guppy and put them in the same tank as my swordtails after their quarantine. I have 3 swordtails, one male and 2 female and I didn't that the guppies would try and mate with my swordtails so I had to remove the guppies. Now I'm a bit curious as to what the hybrid will look like so I might move a guppy and both swordtails to their own aquarium so they could breed. Might be a good idea? What do you think?
I have tried, guppy x swordtails or other platy, could not produce any offspring. Only guppy and molly can hybrid and the offspring always male but infertile. Also swordtails x other platy can produce offspring
Also, to answer the OP, guppies and swordtails are from different genera, meaning they can't hybridise. Even so, if the male has been with the two females for more than a few days, he's already fertilised them anyway.
Probably not. Even in situations like this, a successful fertilisation taking place is very rare. I think there is one documented case on all of RU-vid. Should give you an idea of how rare it is.

1Last question i got a molly fish today (YAY) so guppys can breed with them right? i wanted to do this because guppys last 1 year so i have to breed more my pet store that i go to doesnt have female guppys so i have to fiqure out a way heh
I had a Molly Platt hybrid and there was around 100 babies. Only 3 died and I have way too much , gave majority to fish stores but they wouldn't take them all.

Yes you can I have Male guppys and a female platy I had few fry survive first time but the second time they mated I now have beautiful fry a week old all very strong and active I didn't think they could breed that's why they were in together x
@@sarahhunt9729 Your fish did not produce hybrids. The females were pregnant when you bought them. Almost all platies sold in chain stores or LFSs are not separated by sex, leading to the males making all the females pregnant in a matter of hours. Your male guppies are not fertilising your platies: they are too genetically distant to produce any fry. Any two organisms must be genetically similar to a very high degree to produce viable offspring. Platies are about as related to guppies as we are to members of the _Pan_ genus, which contains chimpanzees and bonobos. It would be very unreasonable to expect them to be any better at breeding with each other than we can with chimps.
Hey, just a quick question. Will this happen all the time? Or do you need to keep trying? What I mean is, suppose anyone purchases a tank with say 3 female mollies and a male guppy. Would they 100% of the time show this behaviour or does it depend on the fish? Thank you so much! The thing is, I want to have a community tank with a diverse set of livebearers. However, I want to avoid crossbreeding because the weak and sterile fry will kinda make me sad :/

If it's already producing fry then there's no need to get a male. The female will keep producing fry for the foreseeable future. Judging by your description, I'd say it's a black molly but I'd have to see a picture to be sure. If in doubt get both a male molly and platy and see which one breeds with it. The one that gives it the most attention is probably the one the female is. And you're correct in saying platies and mollies don't breed. They are two different genera.
Can I ask u a question? How do u hold ure aquarium so clean from algae , I mean like after 1 - 2 weeks it starts to grow algae on my stones and the glass also. Iam trying to clean the aquarium properly but the algae plants never give up lol

It can be very dangerous for the female, when the father is from a big breed and the female a small one. The babies can be too big. It's what some people have reported.
As it says in the video. Guppies and mollies belong to the same family. like horses and donkeys cross breeding produces a sterile mule same in this case
Uri Shasha me too, endlers are really annoying there colors are like some sort of Elian fish and I dare you to try to separate from the male and his fry. Guppies are just amazing. I’m a guppy nerd by the way
