New subscriber here! I've dabbled in sewing for years, but have recently been diving in more who-heartedly, hungry to build my skills and knowledge. Your videos have been SO helpful! Thank you for your fabulous content.
I have never heard how to use the cross grain in a design. You've opened up a whole new world. PS: I wanted to get a glass of water for you. Almost 30 minutes of talking, you are impressive.
Thank you so much!🎉 I am delighted to have found you. Your knowledge of fabric is absolutely outstanding. Now I know more about fabric than ever before and I have been sewing since I was 16 y/o. 🎉
Thank you so much Karina. I watched this video hoping for advice on knit fabrics and you did not disappoint! I now have the confidence to cut my pin stripe knit fabric on the "cross grain". Lovely pair of wide leg pants with vertical stripe coming up soon. Just 💌💌 love your work.
This was the best video I’ve come across about sewing on or off grain and I’ve watched many. You explained what would/could happen if you cut on/off grain. You explain why you may not want to cut off grain and why some of us may choose to cut off grain. Thank you so much.
this is exactly the info I was looking for! I'm new to sewing and have a fabric that really looks best crossgrain-vertical. every video I've watched has told me to go with the grainline, but no one would tell me why! I'm making an oversized button down shirt (and pre washing my fabric) so I think I'll be just fine. thanks so much!
Thanks Karina! I was just considering to cut my Rhapsody on the cross grain. Your video gives me the confidence to do so. First I’ll wash my fabric twice more, love that advice. 😘
Thank you for sharing your beautiful makes with all of us! You have now effectively doubled the possibilities for the layouts of garments. I follow a you tube channel named 'The Tailorette' and she has another example of straight grain vs cross grain. The video is titled "What You Don't Know About Sewing Ruffles". You might enjoy her 5 minute video. Stay safe and sending good thoughts from Florida!.
If you look back a few videos ago, I made the freedom dress from Wardrobe by me. The gathered tier on the skirt was cut like she shows there. On the cross grain. It’s so much nicer and I agree. I don’t use gathers in long section frequently at all but I’ll mention this the next time I do. I totally agree with what she says and do this too when the fabric makes sense for it.
Thanks so much for this video. You explained and demonstrated the reasons for and against cutting on the cross-grain so thoroughly. It really helped with my project.
I had never ever thought of cutting on the crossgrain , you have explained this perfectly, Thankyou very much, I appreciate this more than you can ever know xx I would also love you to explain about cutting on the bias please Karina xx
I talk A lot about bias in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3NlMAnjnVJU.html and this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mTyEISnMOM0.html
So fun and exciting! I am glad to hear your perspectives about grain and cross-grain. :-) Thanks for making this video! I like esp. seeing the border print strategies and your lovely blanket.
Very helpful! Your explanation of grain and how it works so with this knowledge you can break the typical rules! I’m going to be looking out for this at the fabric shops and enjoy breaking the rule!😂
This was a brilliant video for a newbie like myself & I’m glad I’m learning this information now instead of 5 to 10 years later😅. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hey! I know it's been a while since this video but you answered all my questions, as I'm now trying to understand how to sew and cut my garments! This helps me also consider how much fabric to buy so I don't end up wasting much! Thank you! ^^
I’ve just bought a remnant 3m long, although on delivery I can see it’s actually 3m wide selvedge to selvedge, by 1 metre on straight grain. The directional print goes across the warp. I was going to cut a fitted shirt dress out on the cross grain. I’ll save it for something else, thank you.
Thank you so much for all the golden nuggets of sewing knowledge in this! I can tell you really put some thought and care in your presentation here. You hold nothing back and show us in a way that is so understandable. Your creations are beautiful and unique and these sort of techniques are one of the reasons why I’m sure! You never cease to amaze and inspire me!
Great video. Very interesting, giving me lots of food for thought. This might help with my sleeve issues ( hereditary bingo wings!). I have some border prints too. I bought the Rhapsody pattern today. It’s amazing value as well as really nice. 👍
Katrina -- a wonderful lesson - you are so creative and I thank you for passing on this information to us. In addition, your garments are beautiful and I can't wait to order the rhapsody blouse from Love Notions in the next day or so. Take care and have a blessed day.
Hi, thank you for sharing so much of your wonderful knowledge. I have just bought some synthetic satin to line a jacket. I thought the striped lining was going to be vertical on the pattern pieces but it's horizontal. Can I cut out the pieces on the cross grain? How do I find the cross grain so my pieces are straight? There are 3 pattern pieces: sleeves, front and back linings. Thank you.
Hi there. I have a horizontal striped fabric that I want to make into vertical striped loose pajamas. 100% cotton, woven. Will there be any strength issues when cross cut?
Really helpful! Thank you. What would you say about cutting a princess seam dress (flowy and loose fitting) on the cross grain? I want to make the Shelby dress pattern by True Bias in rayon but it won't fit unless cut on the cross grain. TIA
I’ve cut rayon on the crossgrain but you need to know it’s going to shrink in the circumference more and less on the length. I’d wash is 2-3 times at least to be sure.
After you pre-wash your fabric, do you iron it aswell? I try to iron as little as possible so as not to stretch the fabric out again but should one rater not iron it? PS. I'm defenitely going to be looking out for fabrics with border prints
Yes I iron it gently. It makes sense. You’ll always wear your clothes ironed if the fabric is the crumpled type anyway. Even if it comes out smaller in the wash, we iron it to wear it (rayon, linen, cotton)
Thank you Carina. I have a piece of knit fabric out of which I can cut either front and back OR sleeves on the straight grain. There is plenty of strtch cross-grain but none on the grain. Do you think cutting the sleeves on the cross-grain would be a problem? I'm planning to sew a Toaster sweater. Thanks for your thoughts.
The toaster with the regular sleeves or the raglan sleeves? The regular sleeves look loose and boxy and you might get away with them not stretching. However, the raglan sleeves will need to have the stretch for them to fit the shoulders, so I wouldn’t cut those on the cross-grain. To clarify: with knits, I only cut cross grain if I feel that the stretch is the same horizontal and vertically.
