To (roughly) coincide with a steelbook reissue of the film (StudioCanal), we take a look at the source novel to Sam Peckinpah's Cross Of Iron, the 1955 war novel by eastern front veteran Willi Heinrich. Barrack room language, disturbing themes, chronic mispronunciations (and also some jumpy edits and that annoying shadow again, sorry about that). As the German campaign in the East hits the buffers, a personal vendetta brews up between the grizzled front line veteran Sgt Steiner and the prizewinning jumped-up knobhead Captain Stransky.
