I liked how this review pretty much applies to all the Mercenaries games Rideon worked on, as a fan of kemonos & their games, I'm definitely getting this for sure.
i absolutely love the mercenaries series and the fact rideon made this is enough for me to give this a try. i had no clue they even made this and i was actually thinking i'll need to finish the merc series before buying this haha
@@nlaszg it is incredibly slow paced and will punish you very easily. It can be a difficult game if you try to rush the story since level scaling gets out of control quick. Do not ignore your classes, certain abilities are a hella broken if you put the effort in grinding for them. My only complaint is there is far too much going on in the abilities screen. Way too many variables at play. It can scare someone away who hates math This game is very similar to Final Fantasy Tactics.
Thanks for reviewing this game. I watched the review of this once a while back but wasn’t sold yet. Your perspective on it now makes me want to get it (woohoo, intended)! The graphics are charming and it doesn’t look as complicated as other games I have (I’m looking at you Tactics Ogre). I wanna pick this up. Is there more channels y’all can recommend to me like this one that informs us of imports that are out? I just made a japan switch account as my second profile but then I realized that the switch has no built in translate so I found this channel but I wanna find more like it to let me know what’s out there. So I don’t miss out on games that just don’t make it to the west or us or even ones that never leave japan.
How long is the game? Been thinking about getting it, I kind of liked the mercenaries games but they were definitely mid tier but I was ok with that when I got them for massive discounts and it was during a game release slump. Now, im looking at this and 30 is a bit up there but I might consider it if the game is over 30 hours in length.

Unfortunately, money is tight right now, so I don't think I'll be getting this for a while. I do want to get it eventually, though. With that in mind, does anybody know if there's any difference between the Japanese and Asia versions? Are they identical, or is there something like "one version has English on the cart and the other one doesn't" type of thing going on here?
Class combinations and they take turns with speed? Holy sh!t, an ACTUAL FFT inspired game and not just another fixed class and everyone in your team moves TRPG? I LOVE THAT.
I think the more 'Player Phase, Enemy Phase, Player Phase' battle flow works in Fire Emblem because of the series permadeath system (I know that they made it an optional feature in more recent games but just bear with me) despite the more simple battle flow, there's still some tension because there's a lot more at stake because if you mess up your units position (or get unlucky in some instances) not only do you risk not using said unit to not be deployable again, but you also risking losing out on their equipment, items, learned skills and buffs they got from Support Conversations (Fire Emblem's version of Social Links/Confidants in Persona) the latter of which can also effect other units that shared the same Supports to. But in a more Final Fantasy Tactics environment, yeah that can get pretty boring for the game that's supposed to be tactical by nature.
Individual turns in strategy rpg means theres far less actual strategy. The “tenseness” comes from your lack of control and actual strategy while you just wing it. Or it just becomes more individual. You have a group of individuals rather than a team
I disagree with that. Planning who to target to make sure they don’t get their turn in or allowing an ally to get their turn ahead and mess there’s up is really strategic. Dynasty Tactics is another individual turn based game and it’s massively strategic and has some of the best team work you can possibly get.
Hugely disagree. The issue with one army goes then the other army goes is that whoever gets the first round of attacks has an enormous advantage. If I have 15 units and they have 15 units and I wipe out 7 of their units before they get a chance to fight back I've already won. All I have to do is move so they can't hit me in their move then absolutely wreck them in one turn
@@Lightningstrike1220 yeah I know. My point was I prefer that system to 'all my army goes, then all your army goes' because of the reason I put above. Fire emblem does that but it handles that problem by having you outnumbered in every single map.

For how much you've compared it to Final Fantasy Tactics, I'm surprised you didn't play and review Tactics Ogre Reborn. Tactics Ogre Reborn isn't just a remaster, it actually is a complete remake, at least where the gameplay is concerned. This is the third Tactics Ogre release and the first game, classes were basic in the sense that they had a preferred weapon, might cast magic, some had innate buffs/debuffs, but the classes were mainly useful for stat changes. The fact that agility was your accuracy, evasion, and speed, ninja, archers, and swordmasters were the most overpowered classes in the game. The game is still a good game compared to most TRPGs, but there's been some TRPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics that are just beyond anything else in the genre. Tactics Ogre on the PSP was basically an attempt to recreate the original Tactics Ogre and modernize it. Unfortunately a lot of the changes ruined the game like level requirements on equipment, classes start at level 1 regardless where you get them in the game, this pretty much makes the game just incredibly grindy to get those classes playable. The game also adds a skill system in which you can customize your characters. However one big issue is that there are different skills that are pretty much required. Anatomy, etc, which deal extra damage to humans per level, only adding more grind to an already grindy game. Then comes the third release, Tactics Ogre Reborn. Tactics Ogre Reborn takes everything good about the PSP game and throws everything else away. Everything. It goes back to the original Tactics Ogre when none of these extra mechanics were required. The skill system still exists, but it is in a much better form. All your skills are gained based on your level. It basically adds all of the skills to your characters that are essential, ties some essential skills to weapons and armor, and then you have four skill slots to choose how you want that specific character and their class to perform. Beastmaster for instance has the lobber skill so they can either be used to heal or buff allies and debuff enemies, you can use two skills to power up beasts or auto power up beasts, two other skills to power up or auto power up dragon, etc. You also have your weapon skills which is the one skill that will increase damage and allow you to use special weapon attacks, so you really have to pick and choose how you want your characters to be built. Every class brings something to your party that almost none of the other classes can really do and monster classes have their own builds and unique skills as well. Amazing remake to an already great game seriously a 10/10.
@@SwitchWatch Well, if you still haven't gotten to it, I really think it'd be one you'd love considering your interest in the genre and other similar genres like strategy games such as RotTK14. And if you do decide to do a late review might even sell more copies of the game if you were to review it after the fact. Just a few more bits of information I'll provide. The game has three different paths which alter how the story plays out and unique characters each path, a world system where after you complete the game you can move to any anchor point in the game to play through a different path to acquire different characters only available in that path, what's called the chariot system basically the rewind time system like in the newer Fire Emblem games. Then a ridiculous amount of great end game content. The game itself has around 70 side quests/main battles throughout the main game, but there's 400+ when it comes to all the extra content including Palace of the Dead/CODA. New weapons, with extra passive skills, armor, characters, etc.
I get you on Initiative System! (Where Turn order is based on character's speed stat) While I'm more a fan of Fire Emblem then Tactics Ogre (GET IT RIGHT FRIEND, FFT was made AFTER Tactics Ogre Let us Cling together, FFT was made by the same guy who more or less based alot of FFT off of when he worked on Tactics Ogre LUCT. Note that I'm being funny here not insulting you, Text is terrible at portraying Tone, but this is the truth! Tactics Ogre was made before FFT and was what inspired it) and truth be told LIKE both systems (Fire Emblem's "Player & Enemy Phase" system, the Initiative System has a major advantage in that Fire Emblem's system gives you the chance to CHEESE, where in the Initiative system you have to factor in actions, movement, ETC as you MIGHT finish an enemy in that attack, but if you don't, it will be THEIR turn and they'll take out a wounded ally you could have saved with that turn instead. or you can have the character "wait" for the chance next turn for them to have TWO TURNS in a row! Though Fire Emblem's has a better sense of "Fairness" because Initiative systems factor in "equipment/weight" systems to balance it and let me tell you sometimes I HATE this because I'm being limited TOO unfairly in a few and risking making my party glass cannons for the sake of less equipment, which FE Phase system doesn't have, it has a WT system in a few, but that factors if you'll double attack, get double attack, dodge ETC with equipped weapon. I like it) Truth be told FFT had it's own spin on Initiative with it using the ATB System from FF4-7, Tactics Ogre did use WT I believe. But I don't think it was TOO bad then what others did. Truth be told alot of Tactics like this one take from Tactics Ogre and Tactics games NOT Fire Emblem that came out AFTER FFT and had better Initiative systems (DON'T TELL ME you forgot many of the INFAMOUR Castle Siege Missions, especially the one with Rafa committing "F-ing suicide" fighting that "Sephiroth wannabe and his Demon Kunoichi Ladies" and your forced to watch if you DIDN'T make sure you came into that Castle Siege battle as a Ninja with HIGH Initiative! Tactics Ogre never had a bullshit mission like that, and games that used Initiative did A WHOLE LOT BETTER THEN FFT. It's WHY I loved Fire Emblem's Phase System as FE on the GBA was my SECOND Tactics RPG and the one along with FFTA on the GBA that CEMENTED me into the Tactics genre. FFT was my first as FF7 was my first RPG that introduced me to the Genre as well. But I never beat EITHER till the PS3 era, never got pass Chapter 1 battle 2 of FFT in Ramza's past, but then I never made it out Midgar, much less saw the inside of the Shinra building in Disc 1 of FF7 till again "PS3 ERA" where I rebought both games and beat them. FF9 was my first BEATEN Final fantasy game as I lost FF8 before I got into the final battle. And funny enough Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was my first beaten Tactics game, I beat FFTA before FE GBA/Blazing Sword. Happened cause right before the final battle of Fire Emblem Blazing Sword, I let my brother borrow it in hopes of "making him a believer of the genre LOL" so I played and finished FFTA in the meantime! Waste of time, he was a Sports/COD fanboy, so he said "Tactics was for pussies" and it wasn't till 3DS Fire Emblem Fates that he gave the genre a chance! FFT is ALSO his favorite! I loved the story and characters, but gameplay was not my favorite. Hell I loved Tactics Ogre more then FFT gameplay wise. Storywise also Tactics Ogre. Not dogging FFT but I do feel it's overblown because the story was good that people just "zone out" the gameplay horrors from their mind while praising it! But again, I do believe it's a good game, just not a GREAT game "gameplay wise" when other games copied and borrowed from FFT, they took the BETTER QoL stuff and added needed QoL to better the system. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NEVER PLAY THE ORIGINAL FIRE EMBLEM SHADOW DRAGON WITHOUT AWARENESS FIRST! Now I know why I loved the DS remake of Shadow Dragon. The original showed the series "came a LONG way" if I started FE with that one, I'd have not stayed a fan. Good to play old games, but some show WHY their sequels/Future-current entries put the series on the Map) Happy to know this works out well, as the game from what I saw on the Eshop page Video looked like something I buy (The Mercenary Saga games give me extra Tactics games next to Tactics Ogre Reborn and Fire Emblem Three Houses & Engage! I'm always on the lookout for good alternatives then those games so I have more to play alongside them!) So happy to know this is worth the buy! Will purchese AFTER I beat Pikmin 4!)
