I'm excited to play this. I hope Square finally figures out they can make brand new 16/32 bit RPGs till the end of time for profit. Not every game needs to be full 3D with hundreds of devs and years of development struggles behind it.
im waiting here for SE to do a multiplatform release like that... right now, since it has time exclusivity, i wouldnt be surprised if its partially finance by nintendo like ff7r was partially finance by sony.
@@JoonKimDMD first 1-3 hours are pretty dialogue heavy. That can be good or bad depending on what you like, but the battles definitely pick up later. Great game.
This is just such a worthy successor to FF tactics and what I wanted from Square in a long time, so glad they finally decided to bring a new tactical Rpg and a bangin' one at that
People complain about permadeath but i kinda think that without the fear of making the game unplayable due to losing too many units the developers are able to make way more challenging scenarios than fire emblem is able to
Well final fantasy tactics. I personally dont care for triangle strat cause I dont like board style combat. The only board combat games I ever liked were ff tactics and south park.
I didnt like octopath either cause it was too grindy. Dont care to grind that much. I think it would of been good if it was less grindy. I shut off octopath after 22 hours.
@@michaelpaul92 it was a different era. People complain that new games are bad but theres more good and bad games is all. Theres always been good and bad games. Now that theres more good games to choose from less eras I'm not putting up with playing just ok theres enough great stuff to play. I'm not really in the mood to do pointless grinding which is why I do play rpgs still but very few. It's really annoying how they all spit in the players face with a pointless grind. Octopath was one of the grindiest ones I ever seen though.
I think that permadeath is a cool feature on paper, but in practice, players just reset when they lose characters and ultimately your options get pretty limited. In a game like Triangle Strategy, you can go for a big maneuver with the tradeoff being that you won't be able to use the character until the battle is over, which makes the rest of the battle harder. In permadeath games like Fire Emblem, the ONLY option in a hard battle is to turtle. Although, I actually think Valkyria Chronicles handled it the best. You could make risky maneuvers and lose characters, but they would be stuck wherever they fell. If the enemy reached them first, that character would be permadead. However, if someone from your own team reached them first, they would call in medics to have them extracted (and you could potentially redeploy them a few turns later from one of your captured bases). That system was flexible while still making you nervous for your fallen allies.
I love this game, 50+ hour first playthrough! Post game content is top shelf too! No spoilers here, it's just awesome. I am snes/playstation rpg fan for decades now and this is a peak. Octopath was awesome and this is leaps above! We have been waiting for this and they delivered!
I am in love with this game. It is pretty much everything I wanted for a modern SRPG. The choices do end up in a bottle neck but it has 4 different endings and NG+ so for me it is a 10/10.
I've been saying since the first Bravely Default for the 3DS that we now have the soul of where Final Fantasy went, and it isn't in the mainline titles it's- Bravely Default(1, Second, and 2), Octopath Traveler, and now Triangle Strategy. I've been excited, and have enjoyed these games more than anything SE has released since the PS2. Besides Dragon Quest, but that's its own thing. Also the battle system in bravely default/Octopath is actually strategic, you don't just spam your current most powerful attack. People always claimed JRPGs were more strategic, but they really weren't. I love their battle system, and Triangle Strategy doesn't have it at least not early game, but it kept one aspect the points to spend on actions which I really like. Great job variety. While I would of liked if you could changed jobs this is still a great Strategy RPG. The story is also really good. Deep, mature, and realistic. Definitely a must play for RPG fans
Good thing is that in New Game +, there is a conviction counter. So it definitely encourages multiple playthroughs for the objectively best progression.
I was also gonna mention this. It's funny because he was saying he wish they showed it but they've already added it. In your first play through, its more realistic to not know how strong your convictions are and how much you are able to sway people's opinion. So it makes sense to save it for the replay.
Have been loving Triangle Strategy in its first ten hours and have really been looking forward to Matty's review! Hope this video does well because I'm so glad Matty covered it. Edit: So thorough - excellent work! Great review.
Really looking forward to Live A Live in this art style! I'm wondering why Square didn't give Final Fantasy I-VI the HD-2D treatment? The pixel remasters look great, but they could've been so much more.
Specifically because different producers are doing these remasters Yoshinari Kitase is in charge of Mainline Final Fantasy releases and therefore he decides how the re releases of old games go. Great director but clearly isn't prioritizing that stuff over FF 7 Remake and other stuff Tomoya Asano, who did the DS remakes for FF 3 and 4, then Bravely and Octopath, and in general is in charge of all of these HD-2D releases You wanna talk about the Saga and Mana re-releases, those ALSO have different producers in those series, so yeah there's no unified approach for releasing old games at Square at all because of who wants to do what differing greatly
@@apocalypsenever8276 Thank you for the insight. I would love to see FFVI get this style of remake, but I hope the Pixel Remaster will suffice for now. I heard the last "remake" for mobile was a disaster and passed on it.
Unexpectedly bought this before Forbidden West, despite FW being one of my most anticipated titles of the past 1.5 years or so. I loved the demo. Love the art, music, character designs, plot so far. The launch window was everything. I'm playing a ton of Elden Ring, but feel like I need a narrative heavy game to play, to keep myself from burning out of Elden Ring.
Between this and Elden Ring fantasy RPG fans are eatin' good! I'm still way too deep into ER to switch over to this game, but once that dies down I'm gonna be all over Triangle Strategy
I really like that the grind maps aren't a slog to keep all your units up to recommended level. That's probably the best part of the game. You only need to do the grind maps a couple times and all your units are ready if you've been keeping up with them per chapter. Great review by the way, you can tell you actually played the game unlike a lot of the other reviewers. I think the story is great, I just hate the english voice acting, lol.
I've been loving this game between Elden Ring sessions. Was worried I'd find the amount of story off-putting, but it's actually really engaging! This review was great to listen to and I agreed with a bunch of your points. Definitely worried about lack of grindable mock battles..
there was one story choice it took me an entire day to mill over. I thought about when I was out running and finally came to a conclusion. The weight of decisions, including the perfect amount of resource scarcity, won me over. Great review!
My only issue with these 16/32 pixel games is they’re not visually forgiving. What I mean is as someone who is colorblind it just blends together. I had those issues with the BD series sometime when it came to the overwork maps.
haha glad to know I'm not the only one who calls this game "pixel game of thrones" to me it feels like watching an exciting netflix series on my switch.
Im excited for this. I’m actually taking my time too with this game and trying to get involved in the story. I have a notebook and I’m keeping track of who is related to whom and what my initial reaction to them is along with any comments/perceptions by other characters. I’m intrigued in this game and can’t wait to see where it goes.
There is one tactical battle decision that effects an ending. You can set a town on fire for an easy victory or not set it on fire and use other tactics to win.
Idk about respecting your time. If you don't look up anything FFT is punishingly hard and the random battles are just not fun imo. The story is arguably better in FFT, but TS was an overall better gaming experience for me.
You can't skip your turn hitting B too many times. If you hit B during the select direction to end turn it'll go back to the turn menu. You'd have to hit B, B, A to end your turn. B, B, B just puts you back to start of turn. If it does You changed an option(maybe) and you should reset to default or find which one it is. Also if you don't want to read Don't set the voice acting to Japanese! You can press ZR and every scene will just play out like a movie you can watch/listen to. I really don't understand why people change to a language they cannot understand, and then complain they have to read. Are that many people slow where this doesn't cross your mind?
@@maximeroux-lacroix7219 you haven't watched any reviews then. Every one of them mentions too much reading, and mention choosing JP dub. How can you know it has bad English when you've selected Japanese? I know he hasn't tried English because he says often the JP just says 1-2 words but screen shows multiple sentences. He would know the English does that too Because those sections aren't voice acted. The NPC just says a short phrase when you select them. So it is obvious he is like many weebs who chooses JP on default, says EN is bad without ever trying it. Then says there is too much reading. This is so common, and so cringe. Many games say the JP voice acting is great but if you translate the JP review they complain of the JP voice acting same as English speakers do their own. What they don't(and I mean never) do is choose English option. That is something only westerners do, and it is embarrassing you people praise it so, but are too lazy to actually learn it to judge it properly
Just wanted to say that I ultimately bought and played TS because of spoiler-free reviews like yours. Gotta say, I LOVED this game. I had some reservations after the reveal because Octopath didn't really work for me. TS was much more down my alley. I hope Square Enix and Artdink can replicate this success with a similar title or maybe even just TS2.
Really great review! I will admit to being a defender of the English dub, as some of the direction can be frustrating in the sense that some scenes might not be as emotionally driven as it could be, but when the actors get their lines JUST right, you can have some really striking moments. I think the JP audio is definitely going to have more consistency, and I intend to use it on my second playthrough, but I think the English dub has merit in its moments.
I have a very hard time absorbing information if the dialogue and text don't match, and I pretty much need to still read along with the spoken lines as well when playing a game or it just doesn't work for me, so even if it were terrible I'd prefer English. That said, I think I'm slightly more qualified to point out a terrible dub from a great one. ...This one is good. Not fantastic, not bad, not horrible, and above decent. It's good: serviceable by all accounts and standout in some.
I actually really enjoyed Octopath traveler and seeing all the stories get linked together. I wish there were more than the travel banters to show interaction between the characters, but they really helped flesh out their relationships. There are so many paths you can take (protagonists, order of chapters you pick ...) that fleshing them out even more would have been even worse than tedious I guess. Can't wait to play TS !
Yeah more of those traveler banter scenes--or better, the party chat feature from DQ--would have helped. I liked the main story (ies) a lot though, I thought it was a cool exercise in decentralised storytelling. And for the most part the characters' journeys have 'realistic' enemies, not the JRPG world-ending boss.
A little upset that I saw your community post linking to this video and that I didn’t see the video organically on recommendations. The algorithm should know ive been waiting for it!!
Picked this up on launch day and i cant stop. I thought i would like it as a huge fan of FF Tactics, but i didnt think i would like it this much. The story is heavy, but man is it good.
Definitely more story driven than pick up and play like other tactics games. My only drawback is the lack of options besides mock battles for non-story content and grinding items/exp. 9/10. Highly recommend Fellseal The Arbiters Mark of you want the exact FF tactics. feel.
Started watching reviews for this game when the vr port was announced for meta quest. Not usually the type of game I'd play, but I like how they're adapting the game to vr the way they're doing.
Just got my pre-order today (I knew it was late-- that did bother me abit), but if you can get the pre-order character cards the cards are beautiful & a nice collectable bonus as well!
This is the absolute best video covering this game , and I've watched a few - Thanks for all your effort ! Currently on chapter 4 and loving it! The extra storytelling elements really makes this game feel like a mainline FF entry that integrates the heavily addictive Tactics gameplay. So nice to play an RPG that feels like it builds upon its predecessors.
Yeah, if I had to point to just one thing that could be called a legitimate blunder with this game, it's the lack of character portraits attached to dialogue boxes. Hitting a button to bring up a profile with the full art just does not substitute. Seeing that face when someone is talking is hardwired into the human social instinct, it's how you attach what's being said to who's saying it. Wonder if that's the kind of thing they could patch in? I do love the ellipses with the ridiculous sound effect attached, though. Also, I don't think Anna is objectively Over Powered, she's just mechanically really fun to use in a way that feels very powerful. The gameplay is well balanced to account for her role in combat. True to her archetype, she's a jack of all trades actually done right. Just harder to notice since you have her from the start before a lot of the trades she borrows from even show up. I'm so glad there's a new game in the footsteps of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre (although the game it's probably most mechanically similar to is Vandal Hearts) for this day and age that's actually good.
What I'm loving is how trying to be the never give up honourable idealist of RPG tradition is making things almost impossible for me. Trying to repel the invasion without burning the town took everything I had, I could only do it because Anna and Hughette were absolutely broken and I managed to bug out the general's AI. I knew I could have made the easy choice, but I wanted to see how it would pan out if I was full on naïve like most protagonists. My girlfriend is not so idealistic in her approach, she took a more pragmatic approach. So her story is wildly different, she has different troops, and her strategies are nothing akin to mine. I'm more the wear them down from range before a decisive charge kind of guy. She's more of a brutal all our assault kind of gal. The difference gives us so much to talk about, asking why we made those decisions, what it says about who we are.
you can faintly see wich convictions you choose bo looking closely at the colour above th boxes, green is morality, red is liberty and yellow is utillity
Glad to hear it's voiced in English. I have extremely poor eyesight and it takes me a long time to type and read a lot of text. I'll be picking this up.
The mock battles are for farming materials for upgrades not Exp. The exp ratio is very generous, if you're 3 levels below the par lvl you get 88 exp for a single action. Also you can 100% get every upgrade I've already done it with every character. Just use Lionel and get that extra money for picking up spoils, also the golden pinkie ring helps a ton with farming materials. Also also use the auto play feature, why would you ever manually go through text?
Unfortunately I don't have switch, but my favorite tactical rpg back in the ps1 era is Hoshigami, and this game is a lot similar of that,of course much more is in here as I see. I want to play this game so badly 😁
I can’t wait to pick this up. I love old school gaming and this looks so satisfying. Games nowadays should make you think more often.I’m a bit tired of games that relay on reaction time. Who says video games can’t be a good mental exercise. 🧠
i'm really enjoying my time with this game, it was my most anticipated release of 2022 and it's living up to the hype, I think it's even better than what I expected. I'm playing it on normal and I see some of what you were talking about, about being under leveled for the battles and having to do them multiple times. I wish there was an organic way to be at least at the minimum required level for the encounter but it's definitely not taking away from my enjoyment of the game so far.
What’s your opinion on the story and characters if you don’t mind me asking? I tried to get into octopath but the lack of interaction between characters and their individual stories really took me out of it.
@@Just_a_Jape I think this one is very story-heavy and I personally like it very much, I think the 8 main characters have very distinct opinions and ways to see the world and it shows a lot when you have to sway them to vote for the options you want. It feels a lot more cohesive than Octopath without a doubt. Hopefully that helps you! ^^
This game is a masterpiece, from the writing to the battles to the exploration, to invistigation to voting.. there are do many aspects to this game & all of them were done really well. I hope this IP & Octopath Traveler both get sequels in the future, they're too good to be 1 time only.
I agree. I would love another Octopath travelers but this game and that game also bravely default series failed and nobody bought these type of game anymore sadly. Gamers today prefer hyper realistic cinematic graphics games
@@Rizky-Gumilar OT didn't fail at all, it sold 1+ million in the 1st month of its release & now is more than 3 million sold, Bravely 2 sold 1+ million as well & Triangle Strategy is on its way to do the same, these games are successful but not 10+ millions success ofc, keep in mind they don't need to sell as high as CoD to be profitable. Now there's LiveAlive & DQ3 on the way inspired by the success of the 3 team Asano games & they also said there's 1 more new game from this team, the future for these type of games is bright 👍
@@shadowsquid1351 i love classic jrpg but yeah im bit bored with the snes pixel graphics. I wish more companies would make a better more modern artstyle. If u ever heard about Eiyuden Chronicle and upcoming jrpg from the maker of Suikoden now that is modern 2D graphics that i would love to see more.
@@Rizky-Gumilar Yes I know about Eiyoden & I hope it turns out great! Tbh I love the SNES style so far & hope it continues to exist, before that we got nothing lol only the ugly looking Stesuna & its sequels. Anyway RPGs these days are thriving & selling far better than ever, with lots of variety in style & gameplay, it is a golden era for JRPGs imo
Liked 5 minutes in because he said about the voice acting “ah-hem do Japanese don’t do the English". That is so true, but so many reviewers say that the VA was good... The accent, how the voices matched the character art, the translation, the emotional connection are all areas that could do with significant improvement
It’s funny to see people complain about the talking. In Horizon Forbidden West I had to skip a lot of stuff toward the end. And I don’t feel bad about it. A lot of it was on rails. No choices.
Loved the video Matty, definitely on queue to buy 👌🏾👍🏾 Also if you liked fire emblem, you should try Path of Radiance & Radiant Dawn, those were peek fire emblem games on my opinion 😤yes
@@davidyos2575 in my personal rankings, I think it's better than both FFT and TO. But it really depends on what about those games you like, since unlike FFT and TO you don't build up an army of generics that can die and you have to replace, you have an army of unique characters with unique abilities that don't die.
I think it’s better that the conviction system isn’t just a gauge you can see. I didn’t like it at first, but then I realized I was making choices that I felt my character would actually make, rather than just always picking the Paragon choice in Mass Effect, or the Light Side choice in Kotor or what have you. It makes the game more of an rpg (emphasis on the “r”) than jrpgs usually are, more than even many crpgs often are. That’s my biggest complaint with a lot of traditional jrpgs. They’re often just preset stories being told with few choices, little if any role playing. The English voice acting is mostly really good, btw. I need to go back and finish this, actually
I just picked this game up today. I’m getting ready to get it started in just a bit. Really looking forward to it, it looks like an incredible game. I’ve always loved FF Tactics, one of my favorite all games, so it’s nice to get something again in a similar vein. Since tactics the only strategy rpg I’ve played has been Valkyria Chronicles which I enjoyed as well. This was a good review to watch, I like that you touched a little deeper on some things I haven’t really seen much of in some others I’ve viewed.
I feel it definitely lived up to all of the positive reviews and it’s hype. It was a well written and thick story. My only negatives toward it was wishing there were more “real” battles in game. The number of them I mean. A little too heavy on the amount of dialogue. I enjoy extensive and fleshed out dialogue in games, but not so much when there can be an hour that goes by of just watching/listening to characters stand there and speak. Then maybe get a 10 minute battle and back to the long stretch of dialogue. It just happens too often in the game, it’s very unbalanced in that regard, for me anyhow. I still enjoyed the game for what it was but not sure I’ll play a second time.
As a newb I gave it a go on my new Oled. With the opening battle on handheld I just couldn't see the characters well enough to enjoy the game. I tried docking the game but still the same result for me. Maybe I could get used to it over time but not a good impression for me...
Convictions aren't completely hidden, but I think it's for the best. If you want to spoil it you can look online anyway, but in a new game plus the "hidden" convictions are made visible for if you want to 100% it and get all 30 recruitable characters
It was intentional that convictions are invisible in first playthrough for sake of immersion. In NG+ when you try the other paths you can see Convictions
Yeah was also suprised by this game I actually liked the decision and exploration parts of the game made it feel a bit more like a visual novel with SRPG mini games
So you would recommend this game over Fire Emblem: Three Houses? I haven't played it but I just discovered this and was wondering which of the two play first.
I started the demo of Octopath and after putting in 30m I think I still haven't had one combat scenario. I'm hesitant to commit bc the writing so far in the demo is really not good. I'm curious about these two games, though. Would you recommend this game over octopath ?
If you’re a half hour into Octopath you’re probably 10 minutes away from your first battle scenario. I love the battle system in Octopath, it’s like a mix of FF7, Chrono Trigger, and even like Pokemon in certain ways, so definitely play a little longer.
Dunno if you've played any of the bravely default games. But the co bat system is reminiscent of those titles. Just saving turns has a different affect. Starts out a little slow but its a good game. Jist don't expect a shit ton of character development with party interactions. Each story focuses primarily on the character you choose and the other people are basically along for the ride. Its intended that you play through with each character to get their stories/development.
Gonna get it now. Exactly what i was lookin for. I loved ff tactics on gb advance. 3houses is ok, just dont like having to buy gifts and have tea time.
Again commented under 20 comments, please review evolution worlds for the GameCube on this channel! This is a modern game lol. Do you read the comments I wanna see one of my favorites review a good JRPG from the GameCube era… I’ve commented on just about every single video and won’t stop until a review is up regardless if you shit on it or not lmfao
It’s been really tough, as Elden ring has been taking most of my free time but I still manage to squeeze a few hours a day to somehow play this! It truly is the strategy game I have been waiting for!
I played the Demo. Reason I didn’t get the game was because, the hour long dialogue was too long. I don’t mind stretches of story dumping but to have it at the very start without a more simple explanation of the plot at hand was too much. And the inability to properly choose what paths you can take at the time made me worry I’d be upset with not getting certain choices I’d want on my first playthrough. It’s undoubtedly a good game, just its choices in how it handles story and player choice wasn’t vibing to with me too much.
Cool Video man! Do you know how to do a green screen recording? I think you should look into it, I think it would make your videos look more rad. Cool video, ima buy the game cause of your review.
I guess my worry when I hear that a game has "a lot of text" is that it might have a lot of text in the Golden Sun way. I recently tried replaying Golden Sun, and there's so much dialogue, but nobody SAYS anything, or they've made their point in the first couple of sentences and then just talk in circles and emote for what feels like ages. For those that have played Triangle Strategy, is the dialogue long like Golden Sun, or is it just that characters actually have a lot to say? I don't mind a lot of text when it's actually in service of something and not repetitious.
Oh man... I loved Golden sun- played 1 and 2 and still remember them as one of my all time favorites... been awhile though, and I don't remember feeling overwhelmed by the text in that game like I do in this game... but it has been a minute! Lol T.S. dialog feels so bland imo, and it's overkilled. I am a lover of almost all things jrpgs, always have been since nes days- this game is very slow in its story telling, almost everything else is triple aaa imo, minus the exploration phase which is basically running around in town or wherever and talking w your party and npc's, finding a few hp potions etc. and pressing start to exit. The areas are tiny! It's not terrible, I think I was expecting too much...
