Hey guys! So my slave-I mean editor, Alex accidentally placed Noah Ohlsen over either Gudmunson or Fraser (I don’t remember which one I was talking about even though I mentioned Fraser). Both gudmunson and Fraser have the best technique in my opinion. Also I am well aware of Fraser’s past as a weightlifter ;)
I appreciate that you didn't just use this video to rip apart crossfitters or crossfit as a whole. You recognize that their training doesn't optimize the clean and you looked at the event for what it is. You also had some good things to say about them rather than purely criticisms.
his comment about cfit "getting their act together" halfway through was a bit of an odd comment though. Maybe he hasnt seen the handstand-walk-pushup segment.
@@ABCefgy I don’t know how there is any pretending.. seems pretty legit.. not a lot of people can perform and recover like those athletes even though the weightlifting could use some work.
@@andonbrown385 im scared of shit like maxing out or going to failure on snatch or jerk, but i often do submaximal sets with simplified oly lifts like power clean power snatch push press etc
@@pilot.wav_theory If I were to add anything back thats Oly-esque, it would be hang power clean. The reason I don't like Oly is because you can't rep out the lifts. You gotta drop the weight and set up again and I don't like that. At least with hang power clean you can pretty much get a rhythm and bang out reps. Also to the person who is scared of the lifts, you shouldn't be, its easy to bail out of both lifts.
I’m a weightlifter first and a CrossFitter 2nd so this was fun to watch. Thank you for at minute 7 actually acknowledging that these guys are fried, this is event number 8 in the space of three days and I have seen at least a dozen weightlifter you tubers critiqueing the form of these cleans to the nth degree and they never mention the fact these guys are fucked before they even touch the bar. Rant-over, this was refreshing please do more, there’s plenty of content there, watch out for the ladies snatch event from this year though, poor Brooke Wells it’s too hard to watch.
Multiply by 2.2 to convert from kg to pounds. So 140 kg times 2 is 280, and then you take that number and move the decimal once over to the left (280 becomes 28) and add it to the first number: 280 + 28 equals 308 pounds. You can do that in your head in seconds.
As a CrossFitter who loves weightlifting, this was a really cool video to watch. Thanks! You should also do a reaction to the 2021 CrossFit Games mens max snatch event. Guilherme Malheiros crushed it.
I must actually be mentally dysfunctional. I just took a moment to appreciate the logo you have that you play at the beginning of every video. I think it’s clever and awesome lol
I am so glad you are making Crossfit related videos, Crossfit got me into the weightlifting and it always feels special to me, when I get the chance to grab the bar and play with it during Crossfit hour, so I am drawn to quality weightlifting content, I feel so much respect to you weightlifting guys and I am grateful for heaps of quality learning resources like your channel.
Mat Fraser is an ex weightlifter. He came into CrossFit with over a 300lb snatch and a 330ish overhead squat. He was years ahead of the athletes in 2014 when he started
Thanks for such great content. I really appreciate you acknowledging that, since their training encompasses a wider range of skills, crossfit athletes are not expected to be compared with high-level weightlifting athletes. They do vary in skill though and it makes no sense to just paint all of them with the same "less than great" brush. Keep it up, Zack. Cheers from Brazil.
Imagine... its the olympics, and the best public event that zack can review about OLYMPIC LIFTING is a crossfit even that has a part of it being the lifts... Not ya know... the olympics. So sad
It's ridiculous. "Let's popuralize the sport by burrying it behind a massive paywall!" They are literally ruining every chance of new people getting into the sport. I have why this is happening.
@@darksky7507 Here in the Netherlands they only show us the games/sports where a Dutch Olympian is competing for free. There's only 1 Dutch weightlifter, so we won't be seeing any weightlifting until Enzo Kuworge (109kg+) is competing, which is on the final day.
@@darksky7507 it's not free in any country bro. You pay for the channels that broadcast them. And a lot of channels seems to choose to move everything over to their streaming app. Here, Eurosport only use two of their main channels, leaving the other 12 plus channels empty. All events are only available on their app. Which you pay for of course. And they bought the license in my country. No one else can broadcast the events on TV but them.
@@danielhenderson762 In germany it is "free" because it's through public TV, which everyone has access to, this is funded by something like a tax, payed by all inhabitants of Germany. So for me, who doesn't have an income(because student) it is indeed free. Our public TV shows everything and streams everything, also you can re-watch everything for a few weeks online. I'm just surprised to learn that some countries don't cover it at all. Like I'm not even a big fan of Olympics, I just wanted to watch skateboarding and that's it, but its really new for me that there's tjsi much of a payall around the world.
Scott Panchik has no ACL's. He had both his knee destroyed in college football. It's amazing how someone with such a disability is able to contend at a elite level for 10 years at the games.
Jesus. Fraser always astounds me at how consistently powerful he is. He doesn't always win a specific event but he's never not top 3. Thanks for the vid!
Loved it! Interesting to see what criticism you have while acknowledging that even though their technique may not be perfect, the entire event is fun to watch. For once a person that understands or respects that crossfits shortcomings are inherent in the sport by chosing not to specialise. However, I do see it a bit differently: a crossfitter needs solid weightlifting technique more than anything to win the games. Tia and Matt proved it.
The concept of crossfit is great when correctly applied. The problem comes with the wrong "optimization" crossfitters do to some exercises. The CLEAREST example imo is the classic crossfitter's "pull-up", that's just doing the exercise for the sake of the movement, not for its benefits to the body.
Crossfitter's pull-ups as you describe them are not intended for the same purpose as your traditional strict pull-up. Crossfitters still practice strict pull-ups to build strength and endurance, but they're rarely programmed in competition as they are difficult to judge fairly. It is important that you remember that CrossFit is a sport as well as a methodology. Trust me when I tell you that kipping, and even butterfly pull-ups require strength, timing and endurance, and all three forms have different purposes.
omg Im loving this channel, im learning a lot! Im suuuch a newbie in weights, but I really want to learn as much as i can to prevent fucking mysel up. I am really thin and trying to get some muscle.
"Crossfitters don't usually look like weightlifters when they lift" is so accurate. Alternatively, there is something distinctly unique in the way a weightlifter lifts. I think it's that a miss with a weightlifter is almost always technique related, rather than strength related (as in a technical mistake, not lack of technique). Whereas for a crossfitter, it's both lack of technique and strength. It's always a grind - even their makes.
i powerlift in a CF gym. there are some strong men & women there. the aggression you mention with pulling is definitely under-emphasized. theres much to learn from them though; they are supremely athletic and do not quit. plus they do lots of power movements. my favorite thing? always doggos there.
Fraser's around 195 (according to him) pounds which is 88.5 kilos, so put him in the 89kg weight class at the 2019 world championships and he's in the same group as Toshiki Yamamoto. A 380 pound clean is 172.4 kilos, with no jerk. Toshiki put up 208kg to win the gold in the C&J in 2019, and you know he can clean more.
Just finished watching Sika Strength talk about doping, thought this was an alleged non-doping type clean event, lol, not clean as in lifting ... I am an idiot.
@4:25 Calls Noah Olsen Mat Fraser. Saying Mat Fraser (as Crossfitter in general) lacks training - he was a junior national champion in Olympic Weightlifting. Tia Claire-Toomey competed in the Olympics in Weightlifting just to mention another.
5:52, I considered that the "catch-up" stance since they have have their bodies catch-up to the right position. Creates too large of a moment arm and wastes so much energy trying to catch-up to the right position for the 2nd pull.
Appreciate your video, you should do a vedeo on the max snatch event from the CF Games 2021. (not brook wells, ouch, get well soon!) but Gui Malheiros... Im far from an expert but his lifts look amazing. I would loooove to see a comparison between him and the rest of the field. Looks like from a different planet.
I would love for you to do some iwf session reviews like sika strength did a few months back, a long form video with 10-15 lifters really let's the details come to life.
People crap on crossfit a lot, but it will increase overall strength, aerobic and anaerobic capacities, flexibility, athleticism, etc. Its not a bad way to go. Pair it with something else, such as martial arts, or throw in a couple bodybuilding or powerlifting days or weightlifting sessions, and it's good
Hey I don't mean this question in any sort of negative way, I'm an anadrol fiend myself, but I was wondering on the prevalence of PEDs in Crossfit as opposed to power lifting or bodybuilding. Are these guys on gear too or is this a more natty sport?
It heresy to say -- but damn its crazy how much explosiveness comes from genetics. These guys would excel, or at least be well above average, at any explosive sport.
I get that Crossfit competitors has to train a variety of things but at the same time I still expect great technique in those lifts since they are a part of the competition. And they are professionals also and I've seen lifts in my gym that looked better than theirs. That they won't be near a weightlifter in weight is understandable but the technique and form could be great anyway, imo.
Fraser was a weightlifter. There's a lot of hate for CF, and rightfully so in a lot of the cases, but the sport has grown tremendously over the past few years, and with that, the top athletes have become considerably better at everything, including weightlifting.
Not sure about the heel , I guess that apply to mortals, freaking zhiyong get to his heels right before extension, but I got the point for the rest of us are rules we need to follow
