I didn’t know about this bridge when I took a ferry from HK to Macau. When I thought I was in the middle of the ocean far away from land I saw the bridge in the distance stretching on seemingly forever and I was blown away by the scale.

Actually the key value of this bridge is facilitating freight transactions, it does really reduce the transportation cost between Hong Kong's international port and the west coast of the Pearl River Delta, instead for of convinience of individual travel. In fact, it would be more convinient to take a ferry between two sides for individuals.@@RSCB

Reminds me of an old comic book story where Superman built a transatlantic bridge linking New York and London. He included rest stops, hotels, and gas stations periodically on the bridge itself. The idea fascinated me even though it seemed far-fetched to me even as a kid. So I'm very surprised to see something similar having been built in real life.

Uh, what? I don't know about Europe but the US took 35 years to build the Interstate Highway System which is over 70,000 km of roadways connecting every single state in multiple continuous paths spanning coast to coast, border to border. If it was necessary to build a 55 km bridge in the US, it wouldn't take 20-30 years. It would probably take about the same amount of time as this one. But it would already be built by now. As the new kid on the block, China just likes to show off with hyper-focused spectacle projects that allow it to flex its new economic muscles. Is it cool? Fuck yeah. Is it something only China could pull off? Not at all. It's just something only China would bother doing in the first place.

@Fook Oh Wong pretty laughable, I would suggest looking up patent US3849821A. Like most things from China its not original work and made cheaply(laziness). These technologies being used are old and this bridge isn't the first of its kind. Sure its long, but like most engineering features: it isn't about how great it looks, but how practical and easily maintainable it is in today's society. My guess, all that fake concrete will erode 2X as fast. We will see in time. In the meantime, be aware of emotionally(music in the video) strewn propaganda.

Yep. The court and legislation is there to make sure everyone using it is safe and to prevent legal loopholes etc. What’s wrong with you? They had to also ensure that wildlife was also safe which obviously took more time.

Actually the bridge project was initiated by HK. Mainland wanted it to connect four cities, HK, Macao,Zhuhai and Shenzhen. But HK did not want to involve Shenzhen for Shenzhen can be a strong competitor to HK.

I love your videos and this is an incredible project. I personally think it would be cool if you mentioned who the major construction and engineering companies are. For example, Dragages is a French company and Arup is British. It's interesting to see who wins these contracts and who is capable of designing/building the insanely complex projects.

yeah but in this case, it would have actually been factual to call out the political motivation of the project and not call it an "effort to bring China and Hong Kong together for economic growth" because that statement is wrong the main motivation for the project was asserting political might over Hong Kong. Normally I don't really care about the political background but you don't have to go an extra mile and say things that are not exactly the truth to distract from it
@Masood1810
@Masood1810 5 лет назад
@@laenadurlaire4606 anything and everything China does is to exert pressure on its neighbours, other territories - everyone knows that. This channel's objective is to focus on the construction side of it - not the policies - we have enough of other noise makes for that either for TRP or more views or real journalism! (By this I do not endorse China's actions and am against it - infact I have a greater threat from China than you may have as I'm just across the border.) It is a road and it does make travel quicker between the two. To enlighten you a bit, Hong Kong is already a part of China and was well connected already - and the Chinese don't need a road to extend their might over that territory - they have various ways - and have already done that. TheB1M has correctly said that this bridge brings the two places closer and still managed to take the politics out of it and focused on the engineering achievement aspect of it - you know why? Because that's what it does - it's a construction channel, not a geopolitical one. Remember, governments can change, but engineering feats like this will always remain. Piece of advice: learn to live with the dragon, unless you can slay it. Don't be butt-hurt with its strength.

Only 18 people were reported killed during the construction of this bridge, which isn't bad considering the 8 year duration and 15 billion dollar cost.

There's a story behind the scene that foreigners may not know about, the idea of building the bridge was initially proposed by the Hong Kong governor who was about to build up an economic circle among Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai, where the bridge had NO entrance and exit to Shenzhen even though the 3 cities are geographically pretty near from Shenzhen, just so it could make Hong Kong relatively easy to compete with Shenzhen. Still, Beijing approved, invested and finally finished building it as per Hong Kong's request, but it did not go as well as expected, Shenzhen's development seems just unstoppable and thanks to the continuous riots that took place in Hong Kong last year, I am sure the CCP has got so disappointed and would probably fully support Shenzhen in ways in the next coming 10 years...the beneficiary of Hong Kong's riots is Shenzhen, and the young people of Hong Kong have dug their own grave by their own hands without even knowing, they may not even realize they have ruined the brighter future of Hong Kong by themselves. LOL

Those rioters are now reaping what they sowed unwittingly on behalf of the geopolitical manipulators from across the Pacific Ocean. Some of them are now jobless in the UK, and may become rioters, or parents of rioters, in London in the future.

I'm supposed to be going to Hong Kong sometime next summer or the year after, and my primary goal was to see the light show, but since learning about this bridge a year or two ago my main goal is to drive across the bridge. Not sure whether i'd be allowed to (only have a UK license), but there has to be a way. Edit: Also, what utter rubbish *(not on you B1M)* ! A 300,000 tonne vessel would go straight through any section of that bridge... surely?
