We travel from Elizabeth City North Carolina to Belhaven North Carolina, crossing the Albermarle sound and sailing down the Alligator River. We talk about ideal weather for this section and about the options for anchorages in this area with limited facilities and protection.
We've created an ICW Planning Workbook to help you better plan your day-to-day travel on the ICW. Check it out here: abroadreachtra...

This series is great. You seem to be quite content in the new boat. The vibe is very positive. Plus, you have experience on the ICW, so this trip seems more straightforward. And your dog has a dog friend in the other boat, so that's cool. I like the plan of planing with two dogs to shuttle them to shore. I feel like more people should watch this series, but I suppose the bikini channels win out.

I traveled north from Belhaven on the route you showed. Love that little town! I'm looking forward to doing a trip back south again along that route. Fair winds from Norfolk VA on SV Lady Penguin

We crossed the Albemarle in the fog with just a compass on a Hunter 25.5. Left Elizabeth City on the advice of a Rose Buddie. He said a bad N.W. wind would start at sunset that day. Winds were expected to be 25 knots making the city docks extremely rough. We made to the marina at the Bridge on Alligator river that day. No radar or GPS on board.

Great advice on the Albemarle Sound. Unlike others who warn “Thar be wind & wave dragons lurking in Albemarle!!!!” You give clear and concrete advice as to what wind directions to be mindful of when crossing. Erudite and well edited.

Any north east wind in the Albemarle sound is not gonna be fun day other than that you’re pretty good. Any day in eastern North Carolina will be windy. We try not to go out in any higher than 20/25 especially with an empty barge so we don’t get blown around

Thanks for showing the VHF communications. I like seeing examples of that (as someone interested in having a similar adventure but in the learning stages).

I've often left elizabeth city around 3am to get to anchorages before Belhaven. Better a long day than to get thrashed around. The catfish point anchorage has a fearsome looking approach but i follow my track and never had trouble. Well sheltered in there. Not sure if you could land a dog a bit farther in where it gets shallow.

I think you guys must’ve had the best possible crossing of the Ablemarle! Where were all the choppy swells and fluky wind? 😬

Oh we’ve done it that way too but we have been lucky the last couple times!

Another great video. Are those flexible solar panels on your bimini and how do you like them?
@AbroadReachTravel
@AbroadReachTravel 2 года назад
In this video yes, they are flexible panels. There will be a video coming soon of our upgraded solar system that includes a mix of both flexible and rigid panels. The flexible panels are ok, but they never come close to their advertised output and we’ve had a lot of issues with panel failures. We use them basically just as “extra” now.

Help me with my education please. I noticed you hailed the other vessel on 13. Why 13? I'm prepping to do the AICW within the next year or two and trying to learn everything. Love your videos.

In this case we were both on 13 because we were waiting for a bridge. But 13 is commonly used on the ICW to hail between boats. We went into more depth on the subject in the second video of this series: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uBeW_b4kJxo.html
