Crossing the Nicaragua Border | Traveling San Juan del Sur with Kids (Surfing + Purisima)

In today’s video, we are traveling from Canas Dulces, Costa Rica, across the Nicaragua border, to San Juan del Sur, the up & coming surf capital of Central America. The drive from Canas Dulces to the border took just over an hour. Once we made it through customs and across the border, we caught a taxi to bring us to San Juan del Sur which took about another hour. The drive in was just gorgeous with epic views of Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America.
We noticed a lot of decorations being set up, and it appeared like there was going to be some type of street festival that night. Eventually we realized it was Purisima, one of the biggest celebrations of the entire year in Nicaragua! It was like a combination of Christmas, Halloween, & the 4th of July all rolled into one and is celebrated each year in early December to commemorate the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary.
We were also here over the beginning of Hanukkah so we got to celebrate the first few nights here in our beautiful AirBnB.
Beaches we Visited in this Video: Playa Hermosa, Playa Maderas, & Playa Remanso.
Playa Maderas is definitely the most famous surf spot near San Juan del Sur. Scott booked a surf lesson with an instructor who helped him really get his bearings on the board. It wasn’t his first surf lesson, but it was probably the best surf lesson he ever had. He also got to keep the board for the rest of the day which was great for the kids. I think we spent like $20-$30 for the surf lesson and board rental total, for the whole day!! In Costa Rica, it was like $15-$20 per hour for surfboard rental so this was awesome!
