This is the field percussion judges tape from DCI finals 1991. One of the best lines I ever had the privilege of performing in. Many thanks to Mark Thurston for the otherworldly writing and arranging and teaching.

I was so fortunate to be taught throughout high school and later at the Colts by a number of members of the 90's X-men lines - Jason, Rob, Mark, Dan-o, Shane, Ryan Thomas... Having looked up to these lines so much as a young kid and then later marching at the highest level playing with the same technique and philosophy was a dream come true. All these years later I still get chicken skin listening back to these shows. Absolutely timeless.

Never forget seeing Crossman walk onto the field this season with the HTS premier custom white hardware crimson stained shells (at Coats we were envious since we had switched to pearl with our bowling ball look ) not to mention of the finest arrangements executed grooves one of my fav lines for early 90s

Thanks Bryan for inspiring a 13 year old boy back than to practice his ass off! This was the first DCI Drumcorps Show I´ve ever seen and it still blows me away! Always wanted to be like one of these superdudes Grooving like I´ve never seen Grooving anybody :) Greetings from Germany!

Thanks henne2k! Being in this line and the 1992 line was definitely the experience of a lifetime. Glad you dug it!

Saw them in Prattville, AL in July of ‘91. It was my first DCI show. I was blown away by the power of the bottom bass and the snares as we described it “ playing thru the drum “.

Bryan, this show and percussion book was a favorite of mine as well as many of the guys I drummed with in college and in Cavaliers in the late-90's. I think it's one of those books that helped change the game a bit and further modernize marching percussion. Great stuff and it's really, really cool to hear the judges tape. Thanks for posting this.

Bryan, thank you posting this. I had the honor of being in the 1991 line and I loved every minute. From practice sessions at the Premier wearhouse, to the parties at Chet's house. Even Otto's oat brand beer. I have cherished these memories for the pas 29 years. I'm humbled by the comments posted here and the people that were inspired by us having the time of our lives.

10:05 That bass roll is just S I C K. I also miss the sound of the Premier HTS-284's. Best snare sound ever.
@marchingartsmarketplace8114
They were HTS 484, with the throw off. The 284 had fixed strainer. But yea, revolutionary drum.

Agreed. Premier marching snare drums set the standard.

Such a cool perspective, thank you for sharing! After I heard this performance for the first time a few years ago, I kept listening to it throughout high school to keep me motivated. One of my favorite DCI performances of all time. It really does have some nice color to it!

Noah Eller thanks. I was just a small part of it. It all starts with the writing - and Mark Thurston was/is one of the best IMHO.

Bryan, as a young drummer, I had the pleasure of seeing you guys in ‘91 at Massillon Perry High School in Ohio along with our HS line’s instructor. We got there really early and three of the snares were walking across the parking lot behind the stands just chopping away. I couldn’t stop staring and listening to something I’d never heard or seen before, and you carried it through the show, which I believe you guys won, IIRC. Between those insane Premiers, your tuning, the aggressive book, and the smooth hand technique, your line was transformative for us. We were always a winning line, but the lessons we learned from that show took us to another level for years to come. Thanks for that.

Mike Davis many thanks (on behalf of all the guys and gals from the ‘91 team). That was a special time. That was an incredibly musical book by Mark Thurston and John Evans.

Technically second place as there was a 3 way tie for 1st. :-)

There was a 3 way tie for the Fred Sanford trophy, which is all 3 nights averaged together, both field judges' numbers and box judges' numbers. There was no tie for field percussion on finals night.
