In this video I am out in the field with Crossroad Farms in Indiana as they are busy harvesting their 2024 corn crop. In this they are running their two John Deere X9 1100 with 24 row Gerringhoff folding corn heads. Keeping the corn moving from the combines is two of their John Deere 9RX 640 Tractors pulling Brent 2598 Grain Carts.
The corn in this video is on 20'' row spacing. I have done a few wheat harvest videos at this farm as well and if you have not seen those be sure to check them out.

The equipment to support those two big combines is incredible!The two big grain carts and tractors plus all the trucks plus the grain handling facility! And consumers think that the cost of food is too high!!!

Absolutely! It’s incredible to think about the amount of work and investment that goes into each harvest. From the John Deere machines to the trucks, grain carts, and the entire storage infrastructure - it’s a complex system that requires perfect coordination. Seeing the whole process really makes you realize that the cost of getting food to consumers isn’t as simple as it seems. Every kernel of corn and every bag of grain comes with a massive supply chain behind it!

My neighbor runs three X9's on corn. He has 16,000 acres of corn I heard. He has 20 semis moving the corn. 10 to the bins & 10 hauling dry corn to town. A pretty impressive sight to see all those machines in the same field. It looks to me like they need at least one more cart & a few more semis to keep the combines running.

That's a heckuva operation they could use another semi and hopper to keep everything going without stopping very impressive from when I started on the farm with a no cab corn sheller to helping a buddy doing 8 rows at a time.

Those two 2500 bu / 70 ton grain carts when full are packing down a lot of hard ground, probably more so than if the semis were running along side the combines at about half the weight of the carts. With a third of a load left in the cart going back to the combine for a dump does not make sense. As well, less grain augering would mean less fines in the corn.

In the United States, it’s fairly common for large farms to have grain drying facilities. This allows them to be much more flexible with harvesting schedules.

They kept everything moving while I was here. Other than that one part of the video where they came to the end and everything was full. They fueled up the combines and were back at it 10 minutes later.

For all the goofers, green corn doesn’t mean wet. Where have you guys been? Keep the plants healthy till the end. Better yield and test weight. At least 260 bushel. It ain’t the 80’s boys.
