Welcome to 1 Minute Animals! Join us as we discover the most fascinating facts about the Animal Kingdom. Subscribe for an exciting and educational journey into the wild!
The crow is considered to be one of the most intelligent animals in the world. These birds are part of the Corvid family, which also includes ravens and magpies. Crows are known for their problem-solving abilities, social behavior, and use of tools.
Studies have shown that crows are able to use tools to solve problems, such as using sticks to extract food from crevices. They are also known to use cars to crack nuts, drop hard-shelled objects on hard surfaces to break them open, and even make their own tools.

Funfact: Crows and Wolves in the wild have a special connection. Crows will get wolf pups to chase after them to play. And even if they get caught, the wolves will let them go so they can play again. They also will help with hunt by giving away prey animals location, so they can have a share of the food after.

My dad is one of the worlds foremost animal trainers. We’ve raised LOTS of crows and ravens. They’re litteraly the smartest birds in the world. And not only do they speak, they mimick sounds and voices. Our Raven Loki mimicke my dad perfectly. I’ll be doing something in the compound and just here him say “hey, what are you doing?” And look around. Nothing. Then I realize it’s the raven poking his head out from somewhere yelling at me lol gets me every time.

They are a delight. Several families of crows lived in the treetops along a line of old spruce trees growing on one side of the property of the house I grew up in. One of the baby crows had been injured and left for dead. My dad and I took him into the workshop where the crow soon healed up and was learning words like hello. He tried to acclimate with the wild crows that lived on the treetops with some degree of success. He never forgot me but was shot down by a neighbor across the harbor. Who shot him because he was cawing loudly in his bedroom window too much or something. 🕊️

@@thefoxyokai5030 Well the clincher is that magpie can refer to several different birds. There IS a loose group of genera in Corvidae that are called magpies. In fact I think crows are more closely related to shrikes than Australian magpies.

We have a raven who lives on our deck in an "apartment" I built for him, and while he will occasionally come into the house to visit, most of the time he'll peck on the door for me to come out and talk and share share some fruit with him. He'll sit on the table out there next to me, or on my knee, and as long as I'm talking and eating with him he's happy. However, if I stop he'll get annoyed and pull at my shirt sleeve and say, "Speak up", and when he's done with the conversation he'll say "Good-bye", and go back up to his apartment. He's a character.

Crows, ravens, and jackdaws are so cool, definitely my favorite birds, and one of favorite animals period. Besides making tools, another thing that really impressed me about them is that they'll drop stones into water they can't quite reach to _raise the water level_ enough that they can reach it for a drink. They understand how displacement works, that's pretty incredible. Gorillas, by comparison, don't recognize they're looking at themselves in a mirror, but they're primates with a much larger brain.

Knew a professor at my university that was called “the crow professor” (though a lot of his research was on ravens, but oh well, people don’t usually get to choose their own nicknames). He had an experiment (hazy memories) where he’d tested crow abilities for human facial recognition and also learned through the experiments that crows held grudges for a long time and that yes, they easily differentiated between humans, especially when holding said grudge. I believe it was the same professor who buried himself (with special suit, odor masking, etc…) with bait right above his hands to capture certain ravens and mark them? That professor loved his crows and ravens.

May not be incredible but still a nice little story time: There’s a park near my house that I either go to with my mum and dog or friends, and recently we saw four crows there, one being larger than the three. The park’s set up that there are four sections, a dog area on the left side, big trees on the right (we figured that’s where they were nested) and a playground bit on the bottom, the upper area is largely just grass and with the football/basketball pole there it’s usually used for that. And after some observation with my mum we figured out the big one was mama and that she was pecking at the grass and showing the little ones how to pick up bugs/worms, occasionally squawking to get their attention when they were playing around. A few visits over a few weeks went like this. Mama teaching teen crows how to get food, Teen crows a little better at it but with Mama still helping, Teen crows doing the bulk of the work while Mama hangs back, only three crows on the court with now fully fledged pecking and squawking abilities. And that timeline of events had to be the most wholesome and “Human” thing I’d seen in nature for myself :) Crows are one of the best birds

Thing is: Some of those traits even apply to pigeons, even though most people think they are just plain stupid. What crows and pigeons have in common: Recognizing themselves in the mirror, able to tell people apart by their faces for quite a long time, able to learn fast (good problem solving skills), remembering certain patterns (like with colors. eg.: The "password" to get a snack is "blue, yellow, red". Even if you optically switch the colors while keeping the same combination for the password, both birds are able to get it right from the get go most of the time. Pigeons have an incredible memory and grasp for remembering locations they have been at before, so they can go back to the place even if it means flying thousands of kilometres (it also has to do with their inner magnetic compass, but they also have a very good memory), while Crows are able to create tools fitting their surroundings to solve problems. Love both birds.

Crows can definitely recognize human faces. Many crows in my neighbourhood recognize me, remember that I like to give them peanuts, and come up to me when I'm nearby. The crows near my house come when we call them.

One impressive thing about them is that they have theory of mind. It means they can understand that other beings have their own different complex thoughts that aren't identicle to theirs. It also means that they could identify themselves in the mirror. It usually starts developing for humans at around 3 years old.

I want a crow as a friend, maybe not as a pet, but I think having an army of crows would be fun
