HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Restaurants in the islands have been hit hard by the pandemic, but now restaurant owners are asking customers to stop yelling at their staff.
It's nice to see a restaurant owner sticking up for their employees for a change. I have worked in food for over 30 years and most don't give a shit about their employees and even stand by while customers treat them like dirt. This is nothing new either. People have been treating food service workers like we are not even human for decades. You can tell a person's true character in how they treat those in service. I wish we could go to these people's jobs and treat them like shit so that they know what it feels like.
@@Catch333FL You are a classy guy Frank. In my 48 years on this planet, I have never had a server "act like an ass" to me. Maybe they are reacting to how you treat them. I would look into your own behavior and attitude if this is a common occurrence for you.
"you can tell a person's true character in how they treat those in service" "I don’t trust anyone who’s nice to me but rude to the waiter. Because they would treat me the same way if I were in that position." -Muhammad Ali
Not to mention, some of them retaliate on Yelp saying, “we waited in line for 45min then another 30 for our food, unacceptable!”. Common sense will tell you, if there’s a very long line, it’s gonna take a while regardless of where u are in most cases.
Went to help my ex boss out by cashiering at his restaurant day 1 of opening back up to full capacity. Got my picture taken by the wife of a cust who originally ordered because she was waiting too long and wanted her food out "now" told her it would be at least 5 more minutes, yells at me for refusing when I was trying to contact my old boss about instructions, he was instructing me as she yelled at me for stealing her money. She claimed no one picked up the phone but we were taking calls as soon as we opened, first phone order took like 10 mins cuz they ordered a lot of food. She called during that time and we obviously can't pick up a call while on a call. Anyway I am now a bad yelp review
Tourists are back, and they want their vacation to be “normal” in the middle of the pandemic. They need to embrace a bit of aloha when they come. Be a good guest and locals will try their best.
@@Momo-po5tn Aloha means love/care....Aloha ia oe/I love you; Kuu aloha/my love. Many olelo Hawaii words have at least 3 meanings, so yes context is good.
Just got back from Maui a week ago and I can say that I have never seen more Karen's and Daren's in my life. My family felt sorry for anyone serving and tipped very well when we went out. They should put up a sign "No Kind, No Grinds".
Good Grief !! I keep reading about this behavior on Maui, can't remember about Oahu. Perhaps the airlines should administer an 'a-hole' test like they do for COVID ....
We just got back on the 5th. There's was a lot of rude people. We also experienced rude staff. I'm sorry if my money I've saved to come and spend on Maui (where I basically grew up) offends them

Trust me, the young kids wouldn’t know Amy lol…. & they wouldn’t look up the actress either; so Deadpool 😝 ~glad someone recognizes the movie lessons in life 😂 (plus, I was half awake when I typed it last night here lol). And I saw “Waiting” in the theaters when it first released; lol…. I’ll be on Oahu in mid August, so been browsing what’s been going on since my last visit there. I think a lot of people who visit the islands are self centered selfish & well to do, as if they are “owed” the world to them. The world doesn’t work that way. But super cheap airline tickets are bringing the self centered in droves. (And if that includes me? No- cuz I find it a gift if I can visit my family there).
It is a concept, that the customer is always right. Meaning that their dollars and patronage are the reason the business exists. In the same way that the concept is sometimes false, it is also sometimes true.
@@dewturte9144 Please stop insulting me, if you wanna make the world a better place try to have a reasonable conversation with me. Tell me, what's wrong?
The owner, Mike Phillips, seems like a good person. Imagine if more business owners/employers were as decent as this guy seems to be. What a world it would be.
@@appelblossom4311 That's a bad idea for them to implement that across the states because not all costs of living are the same. If they were to raise the minimum wage then small businesses in smaller areas such as Montana or other places won't be able to pay their employees and keep the business running at the same time. That should be implemented per state or even in local areas. Cost of living in Hawaii is significantly higher than where I live
The staff and owner of Coconuts have been extremely welcoming and kind to me when I eat there. In addition to the wonderful tacos. Thanks for all the good memories and keep doing what you do.

Yea it is simply nonsense. There are only 168 hours in a week. The average pay is 25 an hour which means his manager and Chef probobally make close to 6 figures or he has his staff relying on tips. Acting like he is coming out of pocket is simply not true
Keep in mind, the cost of living in Hawaii is incredibly high. $25 dollars an hour May seem like a lot, but there it’s probably barely a living wage for people to get by on.
I would not want to serve people at this time. I appreciate restaurants that share that waiting is happening at their store. Customers are ruthless these days. They are probably hangry when they come in . Glad the employees matter to you .
I went to Hawaii about 3 weeks ago and had a wonderful time and I always make sure to treat people the way I want to be treated. I met many kind locals and respected their home. Tourists should go to places and respect them and appreciate the culture and be understanding that there is a flood of people going and there is only so much restaurants can do to keep up. I hate people who come in acting privileged and are an asshole people like that should not travel at all.
Exactly. As is, these restaurants and owners are having enough problems themselves with recruiting and retaining staff. So I’m very proud to see that these managers are sticking up for their employees now because it’s like no you’re not going to run off the staff I have. People, you guys need to be considerate.
Hey, I feel for anyone who’s job is to cater to rude customers. If anything, the staff deserves more generous tips, especially during this pandemic where they’re truly risking their lives to make ends meet. There’s no reason NOT to be kind. So you have to wait to get served, believe me, they’d prefer to get you in and out as fast as possible. Please, be respectful and don’t come if that’s above your level of tolerance.
Yessss, this!!! My husband does his best serving customers but most just end up rude and not tipping at all. Like if you can’t act right in public then don’t go out at all!
Tips should only be allowed if people are already making at least minimum wage and not as a supplement for a business choosing not to pay their employees correctly. The whole tip system is wrong.
@@0xsergy you missed my point completely. Restaurants get away with paying employees far under minimum wage and expect tips to cover the rest of their pay. That is not acceptable. You are already paying for food and service. A tip is EXTRA payment, for what? The same service you are receiving and already paying for? No. A tip should be given only for excelling at your job. Just like every other merit based job. Restaurants get away with this garbage because you people are too stupid to force them to stop.
they are the same ol fkrs that will NOT wear a mask....NOT take a shot....NOT give a shit about covid.......in my honest opinion, either you listen and DO IT or.............make sure you got a plot plan cuz your gonna need it when covid takes you.
damn tourists. t hat is part of going on vacation during pandemic. like the person said there are a bunch of folks not masking up an also you know a lot have not been vaccinated also. look at vegas. got back from oahu in june i would say they were at least one phase behind. they were just starting to deal with 25% while we in california were well above 50% when i got back
Horrible! Every restaurant is short staffed! My son works in Wailea and had a customer spit in his face! Every day they yell and demand and show no aloha. I'm so thankful for this! I hope they stop and leave their rage on the mainland!
Thank goodness we went there back in May . We basically avoided dining in , bought take outs. Ate at the park , Went to food trucks instead . Bought food at the grocery . Made breakfast every morning. Have POG and water, fruit etc in the fridge .Wore our mask indoor .Gave generous tips. No problem at all.
As a future Hawaii tourist you also have to blame the behavior of tourists. Adults should know better than trash hardworking service staff. Also, I like how everyone assumes it’s tourists being rude and not locals😂😂
Treat employees with respect and kindness. And what is going on with the people walking around inside without masks? Think of these employees and wear masks!
Respect to that manager !!!..seams like a humble dude who respects his employees..God bless you sir I pray things work out in your favor 🙏 alot of managers are cold hearted nowadays
I applaud this owner for sticking up for his employees and having their backs and paying them a living wage for being in service! This is how it should be done!
I love Mike 💘and the staff! We were there last November for our 1st time. He came to our table outside to chat. He's such a wonderful and hardworking man. ❤people! Relax 😌. Bring your Aloha and be HAPPY you're in Maui! Visiting Mike and living a Dream🌼🌸

If only they’d pay a living wage. That’s the problem. Coconut’s is Paying living wages, who else will step up? You must be a great boss, right on🤙🏽 Dear Tourist, kindness goes very far in Hawai’i. Try it sometimes. This land was stolen from Hawaiians, never forget that and show respect to all. You are a guest and not a Kama’aina.🤙🏽🕊
They should have a nice BIG sigh saying "WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE TO ANYONE " Mahalo for your cooperation 😎🤙 They watch how their attitude change ad they walk in.
The owner sooo awesome that he stick up for his employees and TAKES CARE of them! This is rare because most business in Hawaii is now mainland company’s who don’t value their employees and says you can be replaced. I would totally work there if I lived on Maui. God bless your business and your employees working hard. ♥️
I lived in Hawaii many years and from Guam. Some Islanders have respect and some mainlanders do to. So to dose people who don't chili out on any employees like the owner said its not their fault 🙄 you don't like to wait go the the store its faster you get spam n bread and to da beach. mahalo to da owner for speaking up for his employees 🤙🏽🤙🏽 its just a meal cuz life is short enjoy it 😉
Good for them. People need to remember that if your on vacation you are where they live and show some respect no matter who you deal with. Leave your disrespectful attitude on the mainland.

Farout that's pretty high pay for a food service employee, good on him for valuing the most important asset of your business, your employees. What a great thing to see, if only others were like this.
You shouldn't have to "ask" customers not to abuse your employees, just kick them the eff out already! Aloha doesn't mean feel free to walk all over us.
It really not their fault, and I understand the situation. It’s everywhere and happening more often, people need to be more understanding and it’s a crisis no doubt.
Just because you are a customer it doesn't make you right! Treat staff with respect and for one moment of your superior life try putting yourself in their shoes!
No, they said you can Average 25 bucks an hour, and I bet that is with tips included from the customers. I wonder if they are also factoring in that these workers are working 100hrs a week.

Tacos are actually pretty good for being a tourist favorite. There is a place where the fish tacos are amazing, but I will keep that secret with me and my family.
One of the worst places to impose your self-entitlement are at restaurants. 1st of all those folk if at a good restaurant work their a$$es off. 2nd, never spite the hands that bring your food.
I was so surprised to see a restaurant in here that I've actually been to! Cause I've been to like 2 restaurants in Maui a couple of years ago, one of them was Coconut's. Their fish tacos were amazing, yummy and fresh. I was there at a time when it was half full, it was all chill. Nice to see the manager sticking up for his staff members. I hope they're okay mentally and physically, those hours sound insane. I don't think it's just Maui, though, restaurant staff is always a little surprised around most of the world when you're nice to them, it's so sad.
Ikr, I'm not from Hawaii originally but it's just nuts. I hope that other types of employment start happening. The state needs to start in a plan. They can start with educating the young for new technologies. Have a plan. It might be tech jobs, ship or yacht building/repair, marijuana farms, greenhouses, aqua-farming, Something that gets the tourism percentage down to a manageable level. Instead they got nothin goin on. My personal opinion is that Hawaii be a US territory while transitioning to the current Hawaii Kingdom. Keep an armed forces agreement with the US for at least 40 years or so. Then we would see Hawaii Kingdom get investment from many more countries. There would be embassies and Consulates all over the islands. Hawaii really seems like another country to most mainlanders maybe because it is as no treaty was signed by congress.
Seeing that long line and knowing the restaurant have staff shortage, I just eat at home. Spam and rice with a side dish of cook spinach and mayonnaise
man i was planning on going to hawaii for a week but maybe ill reconsider , too many tourist being rude , kinda ruins it for everyone. i don't wanna be lumped up with them
Exactly the same in Florida, Resturant’s closing on certain days, restricting hours, no takeouts, staff shortages, food shortages but plenty of tourists even with the red tide.. we double tip our waitress and put a smile on everyday…thanks to all that work hard!!!
Thats righ!! Stand up for your workers.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 People are getting out of hand. Its happening all over. I don't work in the food industry but Thank you!!
I love Hawaii! Such a beautiful place with amazingly nice residents. I can’t believe people would be so ugly at a time like this. Good job this guy standing up for his employees. Aloha 🤙🏽
The poor workers are on burnout. They need to close at least one day a week permanently if they want to keep their staff happy. I know it’s controversial for some but my parents own restaurants and do this because everyone needs a break so no matter what, that day it is reserved for everyone at the same time. A lot of restaurants that are family owned in my area have this rule as well, I learned when they are open and when they close. Most people choose Sunday or Monday but I’ve seen Thursdays too, it just matters what each family thinks is important. Now it seems like a lot of family restaurants open later and get off earlier which I’m fine with as well, I never understood why some restaurants closed at 12am I’m okay with 8pm or 9pm closing, people forget that workers have family and pets to care for, it’s a life outside our work.
It’s time that rude customers are refused service and banned from these companies. Working customer service for the last 4 years, and especially during the pandemic I have seen first hand the disrespect and entitlement customers have. I have stopped treating rude customers with any sort of respect and have refused to serve customers because of their attitude.
Restaurant treats customers (visitors) with Aloha and don't get back in kind, boot them out! Respect and patience needed in this very turbulent times. Mahalo
Residents already gotta deal with shenanigans from visitors then on top that with customers if they work in the food industry in Hawai'i. There really needs to be a change in handling these unruly people who don't know how to act. We are technically still in a pandemic and the last thing we need is these kind of shenans!😡 So glad this owner is stepping up and protecting his employees👏🏾🤙🏾
And imagine after they make the vaccine mandatory.. your really going to be short staffed. Why let people make reservations if it’s so busy to begin with? 🤦🏾🤦🏾🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Hey Cheryll, I have years of kitchen experience and I'm trying to relocate back to Hawaii. I would make a strong addition to your team and bring plenty of aloha. Can I have a job?
CS....find out where she is and google for her.....I can tell you one thing, if you enjoy that kinda line of work......you WILL BE HIRED IMMEDIATELY!!!!
@@anthonygato407 I did that once when my friend started his job. I told them they hired me too. After about 30 minutes of back and forth with the manager he decided to create a job for me. That job I did really helped them and it helped the manager out too with his bosses. I had applied for the job earlier with my friend but he only got called in.
100 hours a week is they’re determined and deserve a recognition. Also customer service work is hell cuz the people who treat you in a negative way. Usually cuz of personal view points that aren’t reality but instead their own emotions which makes the workers’ emotions harder to handle while at work.
I will proudly say, it, the customer is not always right !!!! As a former food employee I witnessed all sorts of abuse from customer just to get free shit.
Restaurant customers are even more critical, needy, rude, and just plain AH. They leave comments more even though they should have empathy as hiring has been difficult. Go elsewhere
the trippy thing is when you go to NYC.....you got this accent "Hiya there! here's sum menus to lok at".......returning later to say "So? wadaya want? decided yet o still lookin?

This is like this everywhere people are so rude and impatient.. where I work I’m in customer service and at the desk at most we only have 3-4 people (if we are lucky) and sometimes we’ll get big rushes of people coming in so like 3-4 people will have to help like 20+ people who need different things while at the same time we are expected to answer the phone and do curbsides. In general people need to be more understanding and patience about things it’s just so crazy to me to see how entitled people are. If I could help 10+ people at once I would but in reality im only one person and I can only do so much
I live in Tahoe and the tourists are exactly the same here. People have been horrible I have an acronym for them, OEOPA’s Over Entitled Over Privileged A$$holes Restaurant workers are working 16 hour days through the pandemic, and people complain when they can’t eat at midnight
Do these people know how to cook at home? Cook your own food and don't eat out, saves money and time, plus it's healthier, believe me! Also, just go Costco and buy taco ingredients and do it at home, why bother staying in a long line like this, by the time you get to order, lunch is over!
just you wait til they get the months end bank statements..........what??? we spent that much already???? when I was growing up....my dad used to raise chickens. One day, I watched him grab a chicken and butcher its neck off and the chicken was running all over the yard with blood spilling all over. When it was dinner time, I told my dad if that chicken was the main course, he said "yep".....I lost my appetite and did not want to eat......he then said "I provide the meal for tonight, you no like eat what I cooked?? fine!! you can starve!!!!"
I'm a CNA (CERTIFIED NURSES ASSISTANT) & I know what they are going through!!! For some reason the public has lost its reason!!!! I will be helping a patient & all of a sudden they will go off on me saying things like " you are a stupid girl" & " is that the best you can do?" They expected me to bow & cower & be subservient.
Since the pandemic has started I’ve gotten take out maybe 3 times and I haven’t gone to a restaurant to eat in at all. As someone who worked in food service for years, I can’t imagine how hectic and stressed workers are. I can just imagine the kind of customers they get that use this situation as an opportunity to degrade others they see as “below” them because they enjoy it. Stop treating workers like your emotional punching bags.
