Sorry Fin not with this “what do you expect” attitude. Hardcore dancing, flailing your arms, pushing, hitting people’s chest or back, and crowd surfing are all fine in if you look out for yourself and others in the pit. Punching people in the jaw or face and purposely hurting people at the edge of the pit is not okay. That’s what I would call “crowdkilling”
@sequences8942
@sequences8942 4 года назад
Yeah, crowdkilling is when you're out of the pit and some douche wants to start something but won't leave it in the pit. Sometimes the energy is wild and you are gonna get pushed around, that's fine and expected but sometimes people try to involve others for no reason other than they are jerks. Went to an Unearth show, the pit was wide and plenty of space but this one dude kept hardcore dancing right on the people at the front who were trying to watch the stage. He hit my buddy on the head multiple times for no reason, and he got his ass kicked. Some music scenes, though, especially ones deeper in hardcore culture, you are pretty much going to be in the mix just being in the venue, but at that point there's an understanding that this is how it is and it isn't gonna be for everyone.

Can’t say for certain if he was referring to crowdkilling *specifically* or beatdown/hardcore pits in general so forgive if I miss the mark, but in the video clips he showed was kind of a “what did you expect” scene. If you’re going to spend money to go see a show you should at least do a little research on the band and what the crowd/pit situation will be. You can’t go to a beatdown show and be surprised when beatdown pits happen. However I say that to say this - anyone who feels the need to take their issues outside of the pit and break the “unwritten rules/code” is a gigantic pussy

Dude you can totally rail on Babymetal I’ve done it to their fans faces, the issue with your video was you said they’re generic while you praised Poppy (even though Poppy completely rips off numerous songs by them) and you said the group lip syncs live which had you taken the time to listen to one of their hundreds of live videos, you would know that’s completely inaccurate.

I was definitly expecting something different, when i saw the thumbnail. :D Unfortunately, i have to agree that most Babymetal fans are very sensitive, but to be fair, you made it very easy for them to get upset. You made some great points/had some interesting thoughts in your Poppy/Babymetal video, but at points it also suffered from a very flawed methodology and most of the time Babymetal was at the receiving end of it. I obviously haven't read every single comment on that video, but to me it looks like most people simply called you out on said flawed methodology and rightfully so. Now, for you to come around and be like "Babymetal fans are a bunch of crybabys who can't take valid criticism of the band", instead of acknowledging that some parts of your video were very poorly prepared, isn't exactly a sign maturity or a good character. ;) PS: There are tons of aggresive metal sub genres, where people at the concerts are able to NOT act like complete fucking idiots. Hardcore dancing is one of the most stupid ass things ever invented by mankind and should not be tolerated or relativised in any way shape or form. If people feel like hitting someone, step into a fucking ring with someone who will hit you back and don't just randomly punch or kick people in the face while they're watching a concert!

@@ThePunkRockMBA It would have taken you as much effort as watching just a single live video (not even the full video would have been necessary) to know for sure, that Babymetal isn't lip synching. How isn't that poorly prepared? You listened to Poppy's latest album in its entirety, which obviously makes sense to get an idea about her music. On the other hand, some of the comments you made about Babymetal really make me wonder if you ever listened to any song other than the one (Karate) you showed in your video. You're praising Poppy's musical diversity and creativity (which i agree with), while reducing Babymetal to "pretty standart, by the numbers modern metal", when Babymetal is probably one of the most musically diverse and creative bands you'll find out there? Yeah, that's definitly poor preparation in my eyes. You also made some very curious decisions when it came to placing bands in your "4-way chart": Kiss plays ok music and relies heavily on their gimmick? Steel Panther play exeptional music? Sure, there's a degree of subjectiveness when it comes to judging how good music is, but come on man, Kiss pumped out hit songs left and right while using no makeup at all for over a decade. Remove the gimmick from Steel Panther and hardly anybody would care about their music anymore. Like i said: You made alot of good points in that video, but you also had your fair share of very questionable statements, so i'm not surprised that video rubbed some people the wrong way.....

Which is an incredibly fair point of view. Baby metal is just a band that even when you give them a chance, you do have to admit some people just never had a chance because of them not the band... I am one of those people and I admit there is nothing logical or cool or mature about my view on baby metal. Something about young Asian chicks, their voices, their looks, the just completely different culture... I don't think I could ever take them seriously. I tried to listen to them and give them a chance but it's just not something I think i have the capacity to enjoy. From there it's not like I can just dislike them and whatever.. If I'm ever forced to talk about baby metal, which in my defense I avoid like the Corona virus, but if I am ever participating in a conversation about baby metal I tend to just go "H.A.A.M." so to speak. There's no whatever, no middle ground, it's just balls to the wall hatred... I don't know what it is about them but they just push every button I have. It's like when you see those reallllly girly emo dudes in an emo band just absolutely WHINING, no ounce of singing to it, about some incredibly emo stupid pathetic bitch shit that makes most people think about how their 9 year old sister/niece/daughter could beat this 20 something dude to tears on the ground. That same kind of natural hate people have for that is the same kind of natural hate I have for baby metal (though nowhere near as intense as the whiny emo dudes). Again it's not something I'm proud of, not something I think is right, I'm definitely more immature because of it, but at the same time I can't help it.. I do feel like people listening to baby metal should maybe kind of understand that there would be a lot of people like me (except maybe less understanding that it's their personality flaw causing this unnatural biased hate as I am). I just don't see how if they were being completely honest with themselves like I'm trying to do here, they can't admit that maybe baby metal is a pretty easy to hate thing and they shouldn't get so incredibly out of sorts when to no one's surprise people dislike the band and spew out brutal, unmitigated, hatred via comments. It's the internet for christ sake.. And we're talking about baby metal... I mean, come on...

You seemed a bit defensive about Baby Metal and Metal yourself there. Personally I see that Babymetal are more than just a gimmic, and actualy has a lot of good music. The problem of the black metal video wasn't that you don't like the genre but you clearly didn't do a lot research for the video plus you recommended Lords of Chaos. It also came across as you made fun of the genre and everyone who listens to it. Most of the video was about you explaining the history of the second wave and not even that correctly. Black metal is more than just these crimes. I think sometimes you mix up critics with hate.
@johnnymorningstar2855
@johnnymorningstar2855 3 года назад
Well to be far Black Metal makes it too easy to criticize. I still see their fandom as overly edgy people that still act like teenagers who crave praise and attention for being the fan of by far the worse sub genre of metal. I can dig the instrumentals to some black metal but the majority really just sounds like random noise. The fans often come off as an even more annoying of the gatekeepers that are still stuck in the past
@natalie-kj4om

@@johnnymorningstar2855 Well sad that you have that perception. There are cringy people in every genre and those are the loudest. In my experience the black metal community is the most excepting I was in. Most people are very friendly. I've never met even one black metal fan that only listens to black metal or even metal in general. Maybe your view is just based of memes on the internet but I think most people don't take the black metal image that serious. And to tze sound I can say you have to have an ear for that. Just like it is with death metal for example. Black metal for me is the most diverse genre of metal and very passionate.

I'm re-posting my comment from the BABYMETAL video, because I feel like those of us who like BABYMETAL without being psycho fans got lumped in with them and the "open conversation" you mentioned wasn't given a chance. "I agree with you. Musical taste is subjective. I am on the other end of the spectrum with Poppy and Babymetal. I really like Baby metal, and can't stand Poppy. I do have to say that Babymetal doesn't lip sing live and I'd say it's not JUST the gimmick. The musicians are very talented. The music videos do put a disproportionate emphasis on the girls (like they do with almost every band and the front-man/lead singer), but there is a real band in there. I'd say give their albums a listen without the visual aspect. Some songs are definite misses, but most of them are very good metal songs. (The other thing is that when the singer/front-man is a gimmicky or "Attractive female" the emphasis is even more exemplified to attract people to the looks of the singer - perfect example would be Paramore on their first album. Before it became "the Hailey Williams project", there was a band in there but the emphasis was on her for being the "cute punk chick"). " Let's go off this. The music without the image. EDIT - I added the part in the brackets to emphasize my point)

I have to agree there seems to be 2 types of BM fan at the moment, the Babymetal can do no wrong, and the ones that are open to honest criticism. The problem was he upset both sides with his comments, because they were statments that Babymetal fans have been hearing for the last 6-7 years, and any one that bit a bit more than 2-3 video's research would know about. Most BM fans are open to honest criticism by some that knows what they are talking about, I do it all the time.

I was surprised to hear the comments he made about how bad BM fans were. I saw a few of the "you're stupid" type comments but I feel like that's due to the internet rather than BM in general. I get it, sometimes he doesnt intend to sound like this, but Im surfing through his channel and all I see is only older bands and the likes, barely any mention of any new bands that have risen in the last 5 years and been huge (aside from Lorna Shore as the obvious one nowadays).

I can tell you from working at as security and then managing a venue in the early 2000s, so many people didn't understand pit etiquette. Metalheads and punks would get so bent out of shape wife the got backhanded while standing at the edge of the pit at a hardcore show. The worst night in the history of our venue was a Hatebreed, Terror, and Agnostic Front show. This was when metal guys were just getting into Hatebreed. The entire night it was nothing but fights between the metal guys there to see Hatebreed, the skins there to see AF, and the hXc kids there for all 3. Knowing the etiquette is crucial.

You raised a lot of good points in the Black Metal video and the Baby Metal video. But, some remarks did rub people the wrong way and you got hundreds of comments relating to specific comments you made during a 20 minute video. I'm not big into black metal or Babymetal, but when hundreds of people raise the some points over the same 10 seconds of video, maybe it's worth reexamining what you actually said. 1. Black Metal and Lords of Chaos. That's a film that is completely discredited. The film is a notorious hack job (pun intended) of fact. If you're going to reference all of the bad things about second wave black metal circa 1993, Once Upon a Time in Norway is a much better source. And since you really did shit on a whole genre, it's better to use the best source possible, especially since inevitably some murders will be discussed. 2. Baby Metal. The lip synching seems to be the issue here. A lot of their fans claim that lip synching has never happened. A Google search shows it may have happened, but details are sparse and mostly vague. What is clear, is lip synching Babymetal shows does not seem to be a representative sample of their shows. Also, they're pretty popular with Judas Priest and Rob Zombie. So, there is some acceptance by the metal community. If they weren't accepted at all, they wouldn't be getting such good spots on festivals. In short, maybe the viewers aren't soft, maybe they're just addressing a sentence or 2 that was made during a 20 minute diatribe, that perhaps you are not aware that you said.

Hey Finn, I'm a newcomer to your channel. Just wanted to give you my thanks for producing your punk & metal videos. I was 16 in 2005 and I remember a lot of my formative years were spent listening to emo, post-hardcore, mathcore & death metal. I only went to a few shows due to living in a suburb in Canada so I always felt on the periphery of the scenes. Most of my friends didn't listen to the same styles I did, and some weren't even big music fans at all. I think I love your videos so much because it brings me back to my youth and let's me relive my wilder days, going to Warped Tour 2005 2 hours away, a shitty bar in the city next over to me to see a few local bands play and seeing Taking Back Sunday (first high school girlfriend was really into them, got me into them too) along with Atreyu and Funeral For a Friend at a smaller venue. I especially appreciate hearing about all your first-hand experience & history with various bands, labels and scenes. Feels like I can experience it vicariously through your videos. Your channel has also opened me up to a ton of new bands and different styles I didn't previously explore. My Spotify playlists have exploded with probably about 20 new albums and I don't expect it to stop growing. Thanks again and looking forward to more! Edit: what killed mathcore video?!?!

I've gone down a similar route now that I'm in my mid 20's. I've opened up more to indie pop and some rap, as well as some bluegrass and classic country. Why bluegrass and classic country? I wish I had an answer.

@@Las3r_Cat i guess when getting older you just wanna try new things in life even in music. I even got dreadlocks again and i love it more then i did when i was 12 due to having long hair with emo style.. Til i grew out of it.. Well 🤔 not really my emo days its in my heart. But having dreads now feels more free to me.

I love a lot of Black Metal and loathe most of the punk/core and death metal stuff you love, but you’re 100% correct that a lot of black metal fans make it almost impossible to talk about the genre seriously. There’s probably a deep universal truth to how similar this is to talking about pop/hip hop stuff like Iggy Azalia.

Dude, never ever let some fanbase or something hold you back from being critical. For the BM video, it's not that you were critical, it's that you were surface-level prepared only and quoted Lords Of Chaos, which is, as you could have googled in like a minute, known to be full of falsehoods and not a reliable source. In the Babymetal video, you accused them of lipsyncing without checking it, which you, again, could have googled. Basically, people who are nerdy about a topic specifically watch a video of some big RU-vidr spreading falsehoods about that exact topic. Imagine some huge RU-vidr talking about Metalcore marketing in like a 10 minute video, giving false advice or something (just to translate the dimensions). You'd be mad as well, wouldn't you?

While I remember being one of the more critical comments on your black metal video, I think you should make another one OR do a podcast episode with someone with strong ties in that community. I dont even like black metal that much but I was kinda split between your funny but true comments about them being dnd incels, and the attitude that came with your criticism that began to spread to other possible subgenres of metal. Either way, I do appreciate your sociocultural perspective on heavy music.

From Kansas City, many many people dress JUST like you haha, anyway do you think that "punk", in the sense of the early Black Flag and Adolescents sounds, has gone by the wayside in terms of a genre? Not seeing too many new punk or hardcore punk bands, but one new one that's fucking fantastic is Pears

I think you're one of the most genuine, positive and respectful content creators I've seen on here. I can't see how people could feel disrespected by your videos or give you hate even if they disagree. I understand the "dressing your age" thing too - I do NOT dress like I imagined a 33 year old woman would dress when I was a teen. I probably don't dress like most women in their 30s do, and my husband probably doesn't dress like most men in their 40s do either; he still has long hair and wears a baseball hat, wallet chains, dickies and flannel and stuff. People usually think we're about a decade younger than we are. I'm from the UK but we live in Seattle and I agree that offline, people don't bat an eyelid because people here just dress that way (and yes we fully intend to still be dressing this way in our 60s and probably embarrassing our kids with it). Oh and if you like female rappers maybe u would like my stuff? 😇 I'm Shine Brida on RU-vid (not all my stuff is uploaded by me, but some of it's on my channel) & soundcloud and shinebrida.bandcamp.com IF you're bored and want to hear a British female rapper one day 👌

I LOVE getting physical during concerts. "Hardcore dancing" for me isn't just some outlet to relieve stress or some excuse to 'beat people up', but more about participation and expressing my love for the medium. To some, metal became an outlet for them to talk about and express things that is often overlooked as a form of self-meditation. As a fan I can relate to the struggles, but not all hardcore dancers are Crowdkillers. It's true that some take it too far, but I dont believe it's a problem until they start hurting others or involving people outside the pit. Sure it looks silly, but no one in the 'Hardcore community' is out to get you. Most are having the time of their lives, so why take that away from them?

Hardcore dancing is criminally negligent. You could and should go to jail for what you do. You ruin hardcore shows, you ruin people experience, fuck hardcore dancing.
