I am an audio enthusiast and professional musician and teacher. I have used many different amps both for Pro Audio and Home use. From Dynaco to Hafler 500, including Yamaha , Crown , QSC in both applications and they are the best . The Overpriced the so called audiophile amps are not much better then the ones I use. To pay 5 times more for something that may be ? a little more refined is absurd.

Much appreciated your criticism--and hanging out the "dirty laundry" that Crown does not disclose. My application is very specific: for my home audio system I need to drive multiple subwoofers, so I need an amp with high power that can work into a 2 ohm load and has a low pass filter and has a quiet fan if need be. The Crown is probably the most cost-effective solution (if not the only solution). If you know a better one, I'm all ears!

@@ufarkingicehole then you're doing something wrong, they are good in their own right especially when running truly balanced. Its just a different take on the same thing. In the end it will be more reliable and is designed to be drivin hard and to make money, it runs cool and is energy efficient as well, you're probably the type to think all class d is the same, and that would be very ignorant. The best class d amp on the market would be the orchardaudio starkrimson as it use ganfets. As far as the crown limiting to 48k, its a professional piece, 4824 is a professional standard, and the rolloff on either end of the spectrum is so minor it just doesn't matter, when you see all the other features this amplifier, the active crossovers especially make a huge difference.

These Crown amps hit a sweet spot for value. You just have to fit the target use, PA, Subs, low-cost mid-fi in $10K setup I would probably not use the Crown... As for noise floor, I own three pair of bookshelf speakers at 85db, 86db, and 87db. I hear no hiss or noise. Sounds almost as good as my $1K PS Audio Trio A-100 ice amp. 95 percent of the way there... Good enough. Thanks for the bandwidth info. Doesn't affect me as I don't hear that high anymore and my little woofers not going past 50 Hertz anyway.

I use a pair of crown xls 1502s for some diy 18" subwoofers and a 1002 for my front L/R one thing that I really like about them is the built in clip meters, someone about watching the lights fade in and out brings a lot to the table for me. other than that they run cool don't, take up much rack space and sound just as good to me as the amps in my Denon 6700H.

There are some silly faux pas the 1002 has but for what you get, silly to harp on those. Currently Emotiva and Parasound are my amplifiers of choice but my XLS1002 still is used in my applications where solid performance and reliability are what I look for. I recently bought the XLS1002... for the money I am very impressed (used it was less than 250 bucks delivered and looked brand new - I live in Japan so most things are more expensive here). Had I known about the slightly better S/N ratio on the next amp up in the line I would have spent the extra coin as it is not much more (these amps range in price from 300 to 400 bucks new for most models). This amp does a great job with bass, and midrange and has power to spare... it just loafs along and is very transparent... but there is something about the top end that sometimes hints at discomfort... not always... and not often... but there is something about sibilant sounds... they are a little over emphasized somehow... the trailing edge of cymbals as well... if your speakers are a bit more relaxed that might be a good thing... but if they are a bit forward it might be a bad thing... I am using them with B&W 604S2s... and it has made them a tad too forward... I am coming off of a very well regarded mono-block... so I was asking them to fill very big shoes. They almost do the job... and at something like 1/6 the cost and less energy consumption as well. The XTZ amp might be the answer... but it is not a thing in my country. The ability of the Crown amps to drive difficult loads is impressive... so if you have something that dips down to 2 ohms... I suspect these amps will handle it no problem... if you are coming off of a AVR amp... or a cheap amp these will be a step up most likely... if you have huge power needs... these are a good choice as well... even the entry level model makes big power, though if I was to do it again, I would have bought the next model up just because of its better S/N ratio... not that it has been an issue. They are also very flexible... they have hi and lo pass filters... can bridged to make HUGE power... and the displays and lights can all be turned off easily. They also have XLR and RCA inputs and you can adjust the sensitivity (though I suspect asking them to be more sensitive probably raises the noise floor a tad)... I run mine with XLR connections and normal sensitivity.

I think it rolls off in the ultra low range so that your pro audio subs (typically limited a frequency range of 30hz to 2Khz) don't blow out. This isn't a car stereo amp, where you have a subwoofer enclosure inside of a box (a box inside of a box). Your pro subs are designed to be loud for crowds. That's why it fits on a rack. The Crown amp, while not ideal for home theater, was designed perfectly for PA systems, DJs, etc.

Im considering the 1502 for a DD9500 dual 2ohm sub. Was also looking at the Dayton SA1000, but it seems inferior. How noisy is the fan on that crown? Your audio is out of sync with your picture toward the end. Your suggested alternative amps are anemic on power, and not even stable to 2ohms making them non starters. To be clear, you are concerned about the Crown being down a quarter of a dB @ 30Hz and 2/3rds of a dB @ 20Hz? (and the same at 15KHz and 21KHz end respectively) Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the info, but show me an Amp I can drive a 1200RMS 2 ohm DVC sub with that comes close. How noisy is the crown fan? How much idle power does it consume what dsp options does it have? what is the damping factor? Is the Dayton SA-1000 an inferior alternative?

Any amp that digitizes the input signal and brickwalls the high frequencies is not a HiFi option in my book. Thats not snobery, it's just facts. This amp is for PA/subwoofer use and its excellent for that. I dont understand why people get so butt hurt when they are using it outside its intended design and someone calls out its limitations for that type of use. I'll take a little less power from an amp like the XTZ Edge and keep my inputs analog and high frequencies unclipped, thank you very much. There is much more to an amplifier than its power output. As I said in the video, if you enjoy this amp, thats great. I'm not trying to bash people for liking it, but I think people who are considering it would appreciate knowing about its limitations. If you're OK with those limitations and like it because it has big power number, thats fine, just say so.

I think the application for the xls is important to keep in mind. I tend to lean towards two channel audio myself. With that said, the schiit audio amplifiers are monoblock, so you need two. At that point you're looking at a minimum of $1,400. The XTZ Edge is at $500, that's more than $150 more than the crown. The emotiva is just $60 more ( it's a phenomenal class D amplifier for the price), but it does color the sound with a bit of darkness. the saving Grace of the crown is that it's neutral sounding and doesn't add anything to the sound and just amplifies the signal. The fact that it has internal crossovers at a current market price of $339, it's kind of hard to beat. Does the XLS 1002 have the double sampling that the 1502 has?

The true measurement is the buyer, who finds their purchase satisfying in a world of electronics where performance is purely subjective. If it wasn't subjective . . . then there would not be so many varying sounding amps on the market -- ALL with high retail sale. Opinions are like armpits -- everyone has one -- and for that individual, their opinion is infallible and is all that primarily matters to them. There is an unending list of new amps, etc. all claiming to be the latest and greatest . . . but somehow that which was the GREATEST becomes a piece of crap that falls short of the new crop of manufacturers' output. Naturally, there are possibly new discoveries -- but how many ways can you amplify a sound with all these hyperbole descriptions and unspeakable improvements -- and it happens every year with the, nudge, nudge, being marketing with new cosmetics and specifications (that they can LIE about and often do) and the public clammers for having that name sitting in their sound room with a 100% boasting rights and a challenge to others who were stupid enough to buy the competition, but who erroneously think the same of their purchase. Everyone can't pay $5,000 and up for amps, let alone the price tag to keep up with the Jones, who is, by the way, always looking to have the latest and greatest for bragging rights in their listening room. So, you can use other people's experiences as a thermometer to gauge the performance of these creations -- but do yourself and your nerves a favor -- when you find something good that satisfies your ear -- not someone else's ears -- be happy and content . . . and truly, enjoy your music and be thankful you can afford what you have, where many people HAVE NOTHING AT ALL!

Im not trying to discourage anyone from using them, especially for home theater. I have seen them used in very high end theater setups. I was just pointing out some things about it that "audiophile" or "pure signal" types may not have been aware of. They are great amps. I was going to mention looking at the Monolith AB amps until you said you want it to do double duty as a PA amp. The Monoliths are much too heavy for that

Seems like a technically nit picky point. In my opinion it's quite irrelevant that an amp can allow for a potentially unlimited frequency response beyond what humans can hear anyway, but I guess it gives audiophiles one less reason to throw an amp in the bin lol.

Really not sure where you get this idea that an amp is better because it puts out frequencies bats and dogs may hear. Your carb parts cleaner may like them, but my speakers do NOT want those frequencies. My amp does NOT want those frequencies either. Your ears WILL hear the trouble they cause with the frequencies you DO want to hear. Understand? That Crown shows a very flat response in the human audible range, job done there. The sampling to 48k is fine, freq response, dynamic range, etc. all well within the needs for a good HUMAN hearing audible output. I bought 3 of the Crown XLS 2502's, and I love them. Clean. Loud. Quiet. Affordable. Low power consumption. Consumer levels with pro level inputs, on board DSP crossovers LP, BP & HP, very handy. NO Crown does not pay me, I wish they did.. hint hint.. lol. It is like the old sample rate war, 192k is better than 48k... blah blah, Got any grey Poopon? Ridiculous pathetic waffers of BS, for the buck.

Noob question.. I have a 5.2 system and calibrated to 75db each speaker. I just added the xls1002 amp to power my fronts. My question is at level do I need to set the gain knobs on the amp and do I need to calibrate the amp in some way?
@hifihometheater
@hifihometheater 4 года назад
you dont need to calibrate the amp itself. What you want to do is avoid clipping the signal coming from the avr/pre and also avoid clipping the amp. Its a balance of not setting the speaker level too high in the AVR and getting the amp driven to full power but not into clipping. I would start with gains on the amp around 12 o'clock and see where that puts your speaker level at for 75 db. Also, I would recommend setting the input sensitivity on the amp to .775Vms
@Squishmallows24
@Squishmallows24 4 года назад
HiFi Home Theater thank you for the information. I went ahead and set the tone volume on my receiver to 0 and then moved the gain knobs on the amp for each speaker until both were at 75db which was about 3 o`clock on each gain knob. I didn’t change the dB levels on my receiver and instead just the gain knobs on the amp until each speaker hit 75db. My receiver is set to 80 crossover, do I have to set the amp to 80 crossover as well? There’s 2 options, low and high pass filter. Sorry for the questions. I’m very new to this but any help would be appreciated
@hifihometheater
@hifihometheater 4 года назад
@@Squishmallows24 those settings should be fine as long is you're not hitting the clipping lights on the amp. As for the filters on the amp, you want to leave them both off and just use the crossover on your AVR. adding additional filters will multiply the negative gain and you would create nulls in your frequency response

You also don't cover what Andrew talks about in the similarities between to simplify in some very expensive amplifiers. You might want to at least make a reference to his review about that. I almost used this amplifier to run my subs. The built in crossover, connections, and cheap power is hard to argue with. Then, I researched the amp and learned that it was engineered to rolloff steep at 20hz. Some of the measurements I have seen show they start to roll off at 26hz. That killed the whole Idea. Then when you look at the numbers they have .5thd and 97db S/N ratio. They are a good pro amp. But, I will never use them in a high end 2ch or home theater application.

@@hifihometheater Thanks for the reply! It will be set up as home theater bass shakers. I will have a wireless transmitter on sub out from my 5.2 system. The wireless receiver will go from 3.5mm out to dual Y RCA into back of amp. I will use channel 1 out for one earthquake sound MBQ-1 rated up to 300 watt RMS at 8 ohm and down to 15hz. Channel 2 with a second one on opposite side of the couch. I want to use the band filter option to limit just the perfect frequencies for only wanted bass shakes for movies. The amp will be in back of the couch and my double recliner chair has a middle console so inside the console I want to mount 2 remote control knobs to be able to control essentially the "intensity" of each bass shaker on each side of the couch independently so each viewer can decide their own intensity preference. Now I'm realizing how I wanted to splice into the speaker in sounds like a bad idea since I would have to resist and this will probably limit power/low frequency if I'm not mistaken. So now I'm thinking of going through the input side. So from the wireless receiver it will go 3.5mm out to Y RCA (first will this even split the signal from 3.5mm aux out to two channels?) and if so then will it work if I just cut the RCA wires and splice the Y RCA cable to run through 2 potentiometers audio taper knobs? and if so how do I determine picking the correct rated potentiometers and any cons or better ways of doing this I'm open to suggestions. This way if it woks just seems easiest and cheapest. I'm also trying to figure it if/how I can utilize the remote sleep relay maybe using a latching 12v button with a relay in between but not sure yet how to go about that. Any knowledge on that would be nice too if you have any to give! Also if you want to shine light on if this would be a bad amp to use for this purpose I would love to hear it. I know in your video you say it rolls off after 20hz so do I really need and want below that.
