This video is brought to you by armchairbuilder...
You really can take on the general contractor role and save big on your building and remodeling projects. In this video, we share with you how we installed a three piece crown molding with indirect lighting behind it. It's an inexpensive project that can totally change the look of any room.

I did this in my living room 16 years ago. It looked great and was a real feature when I sold the house. Indirect lighting is awesome.

I like the accent lighting. Makes the interior of the home look more expensive, high end. I found that after about 2-1/2 years, incandescent rope lights will show signs of overheating and blackening if left on for long periods of time such as a night light. It was mounted in a similar fashion as this video shows. So, don't use it as a night light. I wouldn't leave them on for more than about 2-3 hrs at a time. I would go with LEDs from my experience.

I like using christmas lights, those 50/100 lights on a string. I just set them up in the crevice and, after 3 years, they still work. But then again I don't keep them on night & day. Just a few hours a night

mounted my 4.5'' crown about a half inch from the ceiling and used incandescent (the cheap ones) christmas lights on a remote control dimmer switch. I didnt install an outlet. my closet doors use to go to the ceiling so when i framed them down i left the backside open and poked a hole in the drywall to fish the wires through to where the outlet was installed in the closet. i bet your outlet idea is more up to code than mine.

I like the concept but I didn't like the look of the 2 lower pieces compared to the crown. The top was detailed and the bottom parts were just plane. Maybe using something to bump out the crown that also has a little bit of detail to it, like flipping a baseboard molding upside down. Im sure the cost would go us a lot higher though. Nicely done.

Mr. Armchair Builder: Great video! I have two questions: (1) do you have link to the installation of the electrical outlet you can share? (2) you state you will install this so that the top of the crown molding is just at the right height so that you can't see the outlet - so, (a) how far is the top of the outlet from the ceiling, and (b) how far is the top of the crown molding from the ceiling? Thanks!

@OpenBookBuild

It would make a nice indirect light for a home theater for sure. You would need to check with the manufacturer of the light to see if it can be dimmed. Some types of LED lighting create a fire hazard when used on a dimmer. Otherwise, I think that's a great idea.

Need some help with trying to do this. From the top of my window moulding to my ceiling I only have about 3 1/2 inches and in another room I have 5 inches. Second issue is that I have parts of the ceiling that meet up to sloped walls (just one part of the bedroom). Obviously don't want to put the moulding down the slope but could end at top of slope (which is a roof line seeing as I have a dormer added on to house) and just cut a piece to put on end? May need some in depth help with it. Thanks!
@OpenBookBuild
@OpenBookBuild 8 лет назад
I think it's going to be tough to fit the crown into a space that is only 3-5" from ceiling to top of window. And yes, one way to handle a wall that slopes is to end the crown and return it to the wall with a small piece. That's if you don't want it to be installed on an angle (which can be done...but honestly, I'm not crazy about it). You could then restart the crown at the next level. You will most likely need several wall outlets to connect the switch to so that each section of lighting comes on at the same time. Hope this helps.
