But why did this bother Kathryn? I mean what did she lose by doing that? In addition, most 18-20-year-old mean girls don't pretend, but give their original personality and that's why they're cool at school.
@@vilagistene2939 Everyone found out what she really is. Her image that she had been building for years has collapsed and she has lost her reputation and influence.
@@user-tt9my6hx3l Why would you lose it? I mean that's how she became the "cool mean girl". He's still very rich, smart and good looking, and that's not nice to be cool at school. Children's society does not work like that of adults.
@@vilagistene2939The fact that she was an mean girl was known only to few people. Who wasn't she pretending to. In college she was known as a rich cool girl. Sebastian exposed all her mean nature in his diary. Plus her mother and the others found out that she was a drug addict. No one else will believe her. And her manipulations were mainly based on trust in her as a good person. In fact, she was very lonely and unhappy girl.
I love how Annette lulls Kathryn into a false sense of security while they’re talking, and both are pretending not to know anything that’s happened to each other.
J as d or comment annett se venger panden que tout le monde découvre le vrai visage de katherine elle est tranquille sur la route dans la voiture de Sébastien
This is how you give a proper sendoff to a film and to a wonderful decade (the 90's). The villain/sociopath gets exposed at the end while good late 90's music play.
Agreed; she was smoking hot as well, which made her performance even more convincing. Like, yeah I totally get why people would fall for her shit. Same with Ryan Phillipe.
You got that right! This Movie and Wild Things will go down in History of the Two Movies where "Payback Is A Mutha!" I remember watching this ending and thinking "Dear God, this girl got her @ss beat emotionally big time bad!" If I were The "Parents" and "Headmaster" I would have said "Put Katherine in another School, or better yet let her do 90 Days at Camp Summit Shock" for Juvenile Delinquents or send her to live with a Family in a Third World Country like on World's Strictest Parents (UK) and see how cushy she really has it. Where on earth was her "Real" Father. It's never talked about and what about Sebastian's Real Mother.
She is always the good girl in her roles it will always be my favorite of mine from her because she was a complete opposite then we are used to from her now thats acting
It's so interesting seeing Sarah Michelle as the bad guy in this movie when what made her iconic is being a superhero ...she is so versatile and so underrated..her eye's as she reads Sébastien journal is the best acting omg I love SMG so much ....
@@marywildrick6101You obviously never saw her on "All My Children" in the 90's as "Kendall Hart". She was straight evil in that role and gave her mom "Erica Kane" a run for her money. LOL!
I always had a lot of respect for the fact that they kept the integrity of Sebastian's journal - they didn't edit it or only make copies of the part about Kathryn. They included everything about Annette and Cecile, even if it didn't paint them in the best light. Amazing detail! 👏🏽
Easy to emadgine that the theme will ultimately become classic enough to get ripped off by other stories and movies long after 'Cruel Intentions' fades into the anals. Because for all the difference it makes 'Cruel intentions' rips off some of those very same classic themes. Since though the Sebastian carachter's life was hardly worthy of a celebrating much-less admiring, but even as his last breath evaporated into oblivion he remorsefully repents and even manages to get redemption in-spite of everything. Especially considering his "Intentions" in terms of why he kept that journal in the first place. Which was of course to document and expose Himself and his Stepsister even if it would ultimately mean his own undoing. After all, there are few themes more classic than the one that says 'Redemption' is only possible by first being remorseful enough to repent and confess. Which may very well have been his 'cruel intention' dis-spite or perhaps even 'To' spite his diabolical stepsister all along anyway once she brought the classic reality of 'Love' into play as just something else to play with at anybody else's expense but her own. After all, the diabolical twat spent their entire step-siblingship deliberately injecting herself into his head to mess with his mind by presuming to be able seduce him at her leisure while still holding out thus never really having to put her moneymaker much less her heart where her mouth is. While in classic reality, in such situationships step brothers may actually let some kind of filth slosh around in their scull but typically never act on it. But when something actually happens, it's no-less as classically as it is typically NOT the dude that's to blame for it nearly as much as a diabolically wicked stepsister, who's only defence is that same old stale original classic... "The Serpent Beguiled Me"🤣...
I feel like Kathryn is crying not because of Sebastian's death, but because she's finally been caught lying and isn't the model student she portrays herself to be.
I don't think the ending puts Sebastian on some ethical pedestal just because he gave Kathryn what she deserves. And that's what i love the most about this movie - it acknowledges exactly how screwed up these two are while also giving us a satisfying and conclusive ending. Brilliant.
The fact that he called himself out as well as her though, he had no reason to lie in his journal as he originally only wrote it for his own eyes. But giving it to Annette was like a cofession for all the twisted things he had done
Considering he had a turning point for his character, and he chose to do something good, even though it was hard, shows the difference between him a d Kathryn: he wanted to do better and was remorseful, she wasn't.
@@antithoughtpolice7497 I 100% agree!!!! He was definitely remorseful!! He even questioned Kathryn about going after Cecile whom was an innocent girl that done nothing to her. All over a guy that didn’t want her, because he liked Cecile.
I love how Cecile (Selma) smugly pushes thru those in the front of the crowd to approach Kathryn (Sarah M) and deliver the coup de grace: a copy of the journal… ❤❤
I don't see it talked about anywhere what happens to Ronald. Poor guy was just as much a victim as Cecile. I really hope he didn't get prosecuted for assaulting Sebastian.
Annette learned well from Sebastian. She knew there is absolutely no point to attack Kathryn directly. But to simply give an indirect messages, such as "I'll see you around campus", that was a good message that Kathryn only caught later 1:27
I'm trying to understand the phrasing. Is it basically her saying "around" implies that Kathryn will no longer be ON the campus as a legitimate student, but instead will be AROUND it like non-student people who might live/work around the school but don't actually attend there?
@@msmilano7091 LoLyeah. that kind of comment always seems to come from people born after the film came out. I still cant hear that song today without thinking of that scene. 25 years ago already!
3:00 oh that picture with that smirk. As if it was Sebastian’s spirit giving the audience his final curtain call and smiling at the fact that Katherine was getting her comeuppance. He was no better but he tried to do the right thing by confessing via giving Lynette his journal.
Yes that picture of Sebastian with the evil smirk that he always wore when he took down his victims was a satisfying cue to the viewer that he was about to get the final victory over the well deserving Katherine from the grave.
The close up on Sebastian's smiling face as Kathryn runs out of the church was just fabulous. It shows he's getting revenge on her from the grave. Love this movie so much
In the end Annette got everything Catherine wanted: Sebastian’s heart Sebastian’s body Sebastian’s journal Sebastian’s car (And later we find out) Sebastian’s child….
Let’s not forget this is a 90s, teen version of “Dangerous Liaisons”, which had been made before in 1988, with Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer playing Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Philippe and Reese Witherspoon’s roles respectively. But the big final revelation, where in the 88 version it was kinda slow and we were supposed to take it in bit by bit, here is brilliantly blunt and slap-in-your-face… this movie, IMO, can be appreciated a lot more now than when it came out, already 25 years ago…
I actually prefer this ending compared to the dangerous liaisons one Marquise de Merteuil's exposure felt a bit too fast and quick that I wish it was harsher, I prefer this ending more cause Kathryn's exposure is much more in your face and dramatic.
Dangerous Liaisons is one of my favorite novels of all time, and the 1988 movie is a masterpiece (I can understand what thy couldn’t draw out the villain’s downfall as in the book, where she is then disfigured from contracting smallpox and has to flee town). I was in my 30’s when Cruel Intentions came out, and I figured it would be dumbed-down teen schlock. But no, this movie is a great example of how you can take an immensely powerful story with an iconic villain and set it in the modern era (the great casting helped too).
The violins ..the music are so perfect to go with this scene. Reese and Selma are so good together like in Legally Blonde. That one tear by Sarah and the smirk on Reese as she drives on. So good!🤩
Everything about this scene is perfect. The music. The close up of Sebastian smirking. The fact it's Cecile who is handing out the copies. The spectacular acting by Sarah. The "You're ruined" look that Cecile gives Katherine. It's spot on.
If Sebastian didn't expose her, she would have gotten through college and ended either in politics or acquiring another powerful position by seducing random billionaires and committing high level crimes - after all, she caused Sebastian's death with 0 remorse.
I do wonder of kathyrn would have been exposed as sociopath she truly is if Sébastien was alive. She definitely showed no remorse over her stepbrother death that she arranged
She WILL go to college and probably will go on to a lucrative career. She's rich, you think some journal calling her a bitch in high school is gonna derail her life forever? Lots of highly successful people acted like unrepentant assholes in HS/college and are doing just fine...
@@chrispeplinski7306 How did she arrange his death? She sent whatshisname to kick his ass, that's it. His death xas a pure accident due to fighting in the middle of the road and pushing Annette out of the way. Black Danceny never meant to kill him.
I love that Annette gave Kathryn and the audience a hint of what was to come. She said the same thing Kathryn in the beginning the “I turn to Jesus and he helps me through it” line. Then Kathryn looks at her with surprise that her words got thrown back at her. It’s a nice little nod, little hint for the audience of what was to come. I also love that Annette basically channeled her inner Sebastian she did exactly what Kathryn and Sebastian have done to people exposed their secrets to ruin their lives and reputation. When Annette puts on her glasses it’s a mini callback to Sebastian. I also love that Annette got Cecile involved both of the innocent parties gave the person who hurt them their own medicine. It shows that even good people can dish it right back out.
I totally agree ! Actually at the end, the 3 of them had cruel intentions ! Annette didn’t need to do that to Kathryn. She’s not the one who killed Sebastian and he was very happy to do the bet, Kathryn did not force him to do anything. Annette’s move at the end prove that she’s exactly like them now.
@@melicost_ Maybe she didn't kill him but she kinda provoked it...... And I personally don't think anette is "like them" now, I see it more as a payback.
Sebastian spilling the tea on Kathryn beyond the grave was such delicious comeuppance. SMG played one mean nasty villain in Cruel Intentions, and I loved her for it.
Grew up in a woman household 3 big sisters and made me watch all these kind of films and when you get old you realise how good they all are love watching them and the music that are in them and meaning are always stuck in my head love a walk to remember as well when dancing in the moon light plays👌🏻
One of my all time favourite endings to any movie. The song choice was just perfect. Sarah Michelle Gellar was perfect. I loved everything about it. Annette's line talking about Jesus helping her through problems, the same line Kathryn uses. The zoom in on Sebatian's picture with his big grin right before the dagger goes in. That realisation on Kathryn's face that she's been exposed. It's surreal.
I can just picture Sebastian standing behind Kathryn and smiling when she is reading his book. Sebastian would be like: "You thought you won didn't you? Guess again."
You know what I always remembered this ending I saw it as a young child but it was such an emotional ending with good acting it always stuck with me. Love this film it’s so underrated Sarah Michelle Gellar was brilliant and this song was perfect💓 this film also taught me how when something terrible happens there’s a silver lining.
Im confused as to how y’all see her as the only villan but Sebastian made this bet with her, and don’t say oh he changed. Wow yeah he actually started seeing women as humans. Round of applause.
Amazing ending and scene. The music. The magic. Sebastian's picture - -and his smirk and smile ...as if he is there, getting the last laugh from the afterlife.
Just re watched this not so long ago, in on the toilet now taking a shit, believe it or not I was vomitting up my fucking pelvis bone after eating so much. I always fancied SMG.
I've seen the same type of thing happen to some people in this life. It's always sweet. They may get away with it for 5-10 years but payback comes knocking.
Sarah Michelle Gellar amazed me in this film she embodied a spoiled bitchy rich girl perfectly never knew she could do a villian role like this also I'm so glad Katherine got what was coming to her
Fun fact: Reese Witherspoon was offered the role of Sydney in Scream and Joaquin Phoenix was offered the role of Billy. They both turned down the roles. They eventually did work together on Walk the Line.
I’m pretty sure that the popular novel “Dangerous Liaisons”, on which it is based-with a modern twist- has already conveyed its moral lessons. Yet as in real life antagonists still do what they do ‘best’: manipulate.😕😐
Used to be … her recent work post Ringer is pathetic. Even her interviews come across super cringy and uninteresting. And I used to be a huge fan but she lost her acting skills and has worked on a lot of shit projects after Ringer.
@@Theonlyone333 I'm still a fan even after her failures.. there's something about her that keeps me interested in her I'm not exactly sure what it is ... maybe because watching buffy gave me the courage to stand up to someone who was bullying me while in junior high school in 1997.. if u notice in the years since she has been a celebrity she hasn't had a scandal or anything controversial or negative or seen getting drunk with Britney or nothing I think that's amazing especially in Hollywood... I see that as an accomplishment all by itself
I Watch & rewatch this scene over and over again….. best part of this movie, how it all comes together and the song……perfect from the beginning of this clip until the very end.
What I learned as an adult is that if there was a sequel, Katherine would have found a way to turn this on Annette and Cecil and continue with her life. That's how good they are.
I watched it some parts had me laughing but I think what I enjoyed most was the chemistry between Sebastian and Annette he truly loved her they both loved each other it would have ended up happy to get her had Catherine not ruin it she deserved what she got in the end
This film brought so many repercussions in the lives of the actors. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe got married and have two children. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair became best friends. I follow Sarah on social media and she posted a photo with Selma like two weeks ago.
I used to watch her on a soap opera even before Buffy. I think it was all my children, she was Erica Kane's daughter or niece or something. Great place for her to learn from! I've always loved Sarah Michelle Gellar.
I was 13 when I saw this from a rent in blockbuster.. my gosh..now this wouldnt be exposed on notebook copies..it would be on everyones smartphones.. times have changed
I can't believe that this movie is 25 years old, but this was a fantastic ending. The 4 leads in the movie (Gellar, Philippe, Witherspoon, and Blair) were awesome, plus the soundtrack was fantastic- especially the use of Bittersweet Symphony during the finale. It's definitely Roger Kumble's best movie.
This movie is based on Dangerous Liaisons. In Dangerous Liaisons, Pfeiffer's character (who is the equivalent of Reese Witherspoon's) dies of heartbreak. I guess things were more hardcore in the 18th century.
