The 2024 Cruel Jewel 100 did not go my way this year, but I still captured some amazing course footage and pushed myself to my limit. This is not a "woe is me, I failed" video, but a celebration of the course and a chance for me to share some of the magic of this race and share some of the mistakes I made in hopes that YOU don't make the same mistakes in your future adventures.
Please join me in this race recap where I will break down the course, share some footage, and share the lessons learned that could have prevented me from DNFing and finishing this tough damn race!

It took me 5 years to have balls enough to sign up for this race, And I watched your previous race recap so many times I could almost recite your commentary. Don't forget how many people you are helping with this channel. You are a true trail Gangester!!

Dude! Enjoyed the video and seeing the course views again. I ran & finished the 50 miler, being a back of the pack runner, I felt good I was around an hour and more ahead of cutoffs. But this is my world and why I enjoy watching vids from you and the likes of you…who are front pack runners, your strength of pounding the mountains continue to maintain a positive mental attitude from the grit and grind is admirable!👊🏻. This raw inside feeling is real and one I had to deal with when I DNF’d Ga Jewel at fuckin’ 96 miles. I took it very personally that I failed. Take time to process it all. Timed out. But you know what, at 61 years old I came back and finished that bitch, in 2023! ‘Let the mountains know your name’! You got this…shake it off…speak to a professional if you have to…it helps. Looking forward to your CJ 100 finish next year x 2. Thank you for keeping it real. 👊🏻

Awesome video as always. Really enjoyed it. If you ask me, it was the lollipop. Only 6 weeks after that event, I don't know how anyone could mentally or physically be ready for a 100 miler. I think we think we are superhuman but we have hidden limits. I for one, think you made the smart choice (if it even was a choice really) to DNF. "Show me someone who reaches all of their goals and I will show you someone shitting at setting goals" - I think of that quote often. We fail, we learn, we come back stronger! Awesome video and great job!! PS - I can only imagine how amazing that $50 of BBQ tasted:)

Was really looking forward to this recap. I'm glad you're feeling like you're through the slump and on a good trajectory Mike. Big summer of training in front of us. I'll make sure to give a fist bump as you fly by at No Business

I ran and finished the 100. I didn't find the course to be that difficult, but then again I had no problem with my nutrition or leg pain other than minor issues that resolved eventually after a while. My advice, next time focus more on finishing the race and less on documenting it and get the buckle. Good luck

Thank you for your honesty. I think the post-race doldrums is something that many of us face and seeking help really turned things around for me after my first 50miler.

I ran the 50 and passed you on the DRT when it was clear you were hurting. It was fun to see you out there even if things didn't go your way. Thanks for the video. Great course footage and some great takeaways. On to the next one!

Nice video. I think it's fairly normal to question why you arent motivated and you will have ups and down there. Probably burnt out and challenges are usually what bring the motivation...accomplishing Lolipop is now making other ones seem easier so you have to find ways to make them challenging for you (time based, etc). You are not alone and keep doing what you are doing - impressive stuff!

Hey man, it was great talking to you at the start, we saw you puking somewhere on the Duncan ridge throwing up and I knew you were in trouble. Glad you are ok, that is all that matters. Keep making videos. You’re right that not achieving your goals makes you more motivated but it sounds like you know what to do, hit me up if you are ever in Savannah. Be well! 😊

I enjoy your videos because of the venues and insights. I don’t ever care if you are first or DNF. It’s just the only part we see. I definitely want you to feel that your life is fulfilling with the loved ones you have, who also don’t care what place you earn in a race. I’d be interested to hear about your race that you don’t record, and just tell us how different it was to just run without an audience in mind. Hope you find that center, brother.

Sorry how it went as they say it that’s a course I can eat it young next year I’m doing DT stone. I was supposed to do the 50 there this year but I ended up with the bad injury so next year I’m doing DT stone, which is so similar mountains of Georgia and then hopefully the other year I’m not too old. I’m gonna give the cruise one shot. I’m already 62 so what’s the difference? It’s only a number, sorry worked out but you did that before you you’ve been doing this before or what you did I mean, you know your body just pay price of times you’re

It kind of sounds like you didn’t give yourself enough time to recover from the previous race, which may have affected you mentally and physically. Not having the drive to do something and making bad decisions can be evidence of burnout. It’s okay to give yourself the time to get back to a place where you can be present. Thanks for the video! You should come out here to Auburn, CA and do some training 😃

Hmm, sounds a little like burnout. Mental recovery from the effort of training and competing takes time, too.
