This is a walkaround in a Cruise ship engineroom with a massive 6 main engines and alot of life support systems.
Many of you wanted to see other systems as well as the machinery, and here you have it.
In the start you also get a perspective of how big these engines are, when one of the engineers from the crew is making his inspections.
Enjoy

You can see it’s a cruise ship’s engine room because it is so compacted. They left the bare minimum of space for inspection and maintenance. I like engine rooms but I have a doubt about this one. (ex-ship’s engineer on bulk carriers and container ships)

hi mr. andre its a huge impressive engine room, I have some question for you, the engine its look like a wartsila or B&W if I'm correct and is a four cycle engine , another question 6 main engine how many propellers, the engine has a shaft generator and a pitch propeller drive? how many engineers and ratings crew, sorry of my lots question ,hoping you can reply me.
@andresteinum
@andresteinum 9 месяцев назад
Hi Socrates. These engines are only power generators. Then this power is used to power two large electric motors who is connected to two propellers with a long propeller shaft. Not needed to have pitch propellers as the electric motors are controlled with large VSD frequency controllers. Dont know how many engineers is working on the ship. Yes they are Wärtsilä engines. They also power the rest of the cruise ship.

On a Cruise ship a very average range is hotel and other mechanical power services consume about a 1/3 of the entire electrical powerload required when sailing at service speed. And I did not see any propeller shaft in this video. Only 6 generator sets. I imagine either it is driven by 2 Azipods or 2 direct shaft props from 2 electric Propulsion Motors.

You could say main engines as there are no other engines. The majority of cruise ships built in the last 25 - 20 years, have electric propulsion,. On older cruise ships you can find classic main engines, usually four, and two propellers.

While the internal combustion engine is currently king, I have to wonder if it would not be better to go back to steam. A triple expansion engine pulls more energy out of the fuel than an internal combustion one does. So for each weight of fuel, the steam engine could be more efficient. Also, given the steam engine can be run on a wide range of fuels, including the rancid cooking oil from the kitchens. Just thinking out loud.
@Tapiokr
@Tapiokr 8 месяцев назад
Total efficiency of steam engine including boiler is about 10%. Big diesel engine is about 30%.
@AnalGravey
@AnalGravey 7 месяцев назад
@Tapiokr if there such a thing as push pull propellers why not combine the two technologies?
@juhokestila7367
@juhokestila7367 6 месяцев назад
Modern solution would be combined cycle power plant. The fuel is first used in a gas turbine and the gas turbine exhaust is directed to a heat recovery steam generator producing steam. The steam is used to run a steam turbine on a same shaft with the gas turbine. The turbines turn a generator to generate electricity for propulsion and other uses on the ship. Efficiencies over 60% are achievable this way.
@jannilshansen6142
@jannilshansen6142 5 месяцев назад
@@Tapiokr Diesel engines of this size have an efficieny of around 45 % 30 5 are small diesel engines or larger petrol engines. When it comes to big crosshead two stroke diesel engines go up to 55 %. In combined cycle systems where the exhaust gas ist used to produce steam and run a steam turbine (which has an internal efficiency of up to 40 %) the efficiencies can reach up to 60/70 %. With a steam engine that would be impossible.

It has a big benefit. You can manage the power provided by the engines in a way that all the engines are running at most efficient loads. With a direct propulsion that is not always possible, except you are steaming over long distances what cruise ships do not do

I wonder how much electrical power a cruise ship uses. I believe these big diesel engines are best for propulsion but a turbine might be better for electrical power. A lot less parts and very little maintenance. And they are efficient. We use them in the offshore industry as both drives for compressors and generators. 50 megawatt generator sets are common.
@standbytogo123
@standbytogo123 4 месяца назад
They are not big Diesel engines but compact medium speed engines to save space. Main propulsion steam plants burns more fuel and are not as efficient as Diesel Propulsion. However a Diesel plant has a lot more moving parts and required maintenance pushing the running costs up. Today you would be hard pushed to find a ship with a steam propulsion plant. Probably the only ones would be Gas carries that can burn the boil off from the cargo tanks in the boilers to provide steam for the turbines.
